Variations on a Theme No. 38, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This painting is part of my current Variations on a Theme exhibition at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos through June 1st. For my design, I took an image of my No. 36 painting, cut up the squares vertically in half and rearranged them by hand until I came up with this composition. I then made a collage of it, then drew it up on the canvas. I like the way it resembles female figures and abstracts the shapes even more. I often revisit previous paintings to see if I can reinvent them in new ways. If I borrow from myself then my work can show a strong interrelation and connectedness which is important to me. #variationsonatheme #soloexhibition #galleryart #madsengallery #opticalart #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #siliconvalley #artnow @apmadsengallery

Rhythm & Line No. 16, acrylic polymer on canvas, 60 x 60: Bands of bold color project forward, others quietly recede. Initially, I cover the canvas with a line drawing of the smallest band, then erase to get the four different sized bands. I write down the numerical log of the pattern, then begin the painting. I see the painting as a color puzzle that I must solve. I don’t like to plan the colors because this makes the painting too predictable, but prefer to follow my intuition where the colors appear in my mind naturally as I paint to music. I trust the process even when it feels risky. Each color added changes the whole painting which always amazes me. I divide the canvas into varying larger horizontal bands to slow the eye and to create an optical effect by jogging the stripes. I like to present angled shots of my paintings because they are also viewed on the wall from angled perspectives. #opticalart #stripes #color #geometricart #geometricpainting #chromestheticart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #galleryart #sfbayareaartist #colorfieldpainting #artnow

Music of the Spheres No. 26, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This painting is part of my exhibition at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos until June 1st. With this painting, I explore the interaction between a dark pyrole red in the upper sphere and a cool, light cobalt in the lower sphere. It is rather amazing how adding a lighter blue to the red actually creates a darker reddish-purple. As the spheres move closer together, they combine to create a rich purple in the center eye-shape. As they move further apart, the colors lighten to a vibrant pink and sky blue. The four spheres gently lift the eye upwards which creates positive effect on the emotions. #musicofthespheres #opticalart #colortheory #redandblue #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #minimalart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #madsengallery #artexhibition #sfbayareaartist #artnow @apmadsengallery

Variations on a Theme No. 40, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: It is good to revisit previous paintings and reinvent them. For this painting, I combined two images of my No. 11 painting to create a layered effect and illusion of transparency. There was a great deal of color mixing for this painting. The negative spaces become curved diamond shapes and act as places of rest. The painting has a nice optical effect where it softens at a distance and it can be hung vertically or horizontally. #variationsonatheme #opticalart #hardedgepainting #chromestheticart #color #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Portals No. 20, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This painting reveals the interaction between coral, red, purple, black, gray and white. The illusion of overlapping rectangles steps into a minimal and modern landscape or restful place. The blacks, grays, purples and mauves cool the warm, glowing reds and corals. The painting is minimal but very complex at the same time where the eye can’t figure out how many illusions of overlapping rectangles are present. These are definitely my most difficult pieces and it’s like doing a math problem, but with color. The horizontal shapes are calming to the emotions, the ascending verticals act to lift the spirit and the shifting rectangles give the painting movement and a nice rhythm. #portals #redandblack #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #westcoastminimalism #californiaminimalism #minimalart #meditativeart #geometricart #geometricpainting #opticalart #chromestheticart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #sfbayareaartist #artnow

You Hear the Colours No. 3, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This series is inspired by a season of concert going and looking at how color, light and sound affect the emotions. I am interested in the place where heaven meets earth, the place where music can take you. I purposefully angled the off-center line so that it would not feel like a landscape if placed horizontally or a structure if placed vertically. The composition seems to work no matter what direction it is placed and it has an energizing and uplifting effect on the emotions and a sense of sound emanating from the bright beams of color, The first image is the painting commissioned by Louis Vuitton and the second painting is available at S16 Gallery in Montreal. #hearingcolors #opticalart #perspectivepainting #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #colorfieldpainting #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #s16gallery @s16gallery

Euphonic Colour No. 23, acrylic polymer on canvas, 36 x 36: I came up with this composition as I was playing with multiple pie shapes. I created the square center area to float and recede at the same time which creates a nice optical effect. The central negative white space becomes a curved diamond shape which might become a focal point, but it directs the eye back to the brightly colored striped bands. The paint colors are chosen intuitively while listening to music with no color pattern in mind which tends to hold the viewer’s interest longer. #opticalart #color #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #bendergallery @bendergallery

Variations on a Theme No. 8, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: In 2015, I began painting solely colorfield and geometric, and this painting was on of those early works. It is now 9 years later, and I have found it to be a continual and exciting challenge to push myself in different directions yet being true to these two constraints that I have placed on myself, to create illusions using flat color and to paint geometric shapes. Occasionally, a few organic paintings will emerge. I normally work in a series where I establish a “theme” which is the composition, then create “variations” of that theme where I explore color. The drawing is carefully worked out and transferred to the canvas, but the colors are chosen intuitively while listening to music. Geometric designs are understood by all cultures, peoples, ages, races and this common connection with all people is important to me. #variationsonatheme #colorfieldpainting #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

New painting, Portals No. 29, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This is my latest Portals painting and I have made new changes. First, I have painted the vertical bands in even sizes which has created a wonderful squarish gradation above and below the first offset section. I didn’t add gray this time to the upper and lower sections to keep the fresh, airy feel of this piece. I also painted the colors symmetrically on the left and the right and found that this eliminated the struggle to keep the colors balanced. This also brings more emphasis to the central blue portal which may feel more grounding. The painting works equally well when placed vertically where it might have a more landscape feel. I like the way the larger blue rectangle that touches the lime green floats forward a bit, yet the greener bands tie it to the lime greens which keeps the connection in the color gradation. There were 135 sections to paint, but I really enjoyed painting this one! #portals #opticalart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #westcoastminimalism #californiaminimalism #minimalart #meditativeart #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

64 Colours images 64 different colors with the outer dots being cut off to suggest an infinite space. The colors are chosen intuitively where I must balance the colors which is a color puzzle I must solve. The dots appear orderly and static at a first look, but then after dots appear randomly and dance about in the white spaces. The black grid creates a calming effect which stabilizes the dot activity, but then white dots begin to pulsate and twinkle in the centers of the rounded diamond shapes where the grid intersects. This is an interactive painting where the viewer becomes essential and completes the piece. #64colours #opticalart #opart #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #interactiveart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporatart #contemporarypainting #abstractart #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Portals No. 7, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: For Portals No. 7, I began with a cool magenta for the central portal and decided to gradually add a warmer pink as you move outwards to the left and to the right horizontally. It is important for the viewer to visually shift between the horizontal and vertical shapes. Vertically, the magenta lightens and an illusion of purple is created when viewed next to the warmer pinks. The transparent effects, subtle color shifts and the way the colors jump to the adjacent color planes gives an illusion of color gradation which makes the painting appear to be lit from the back. #portals #pink #opticalart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #meditativeart #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #galleryart #madsengallery @apmadsengallery

Variations on a Theme No. 16, acrylic polymer on canvas, 24 x 48: I came up with this design by taking out one of the three sections from my Variations on a Theme No. 13 & 14 painting compositions. I changed the multicolor centers to black and combined each color with the black to get the shadow colors which gives a 3D effect. The back and forth juxtaposition gives the piece a rhythmic movement and the offset central division creates a nice optical effect. The negative spaces in the scalloped outer edges point the eye inward to the shapes and also create a nice rhythm. There are also after images that appear in the outer white areas which pulsate. This 24 x 48 size works especially well on a smaller wall space that is a focal point. #variationsonatheme #opticalart #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #color #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #abstractart #sfbayareaartist #artnow #bendergallery

From the Sea, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: Occasionally, I like to paint with organic line. From the Sea began with projecting an image of sea coral onto my canvas with a light projector, then taping the shapes, drawing around them and then having to re-tape the entire drawing. I changed areas that weren’t flowing properly and began with painting the blacks, then the colors, keeping a balance between the warm and cool colors. I did not want the painting to necessarily appear like coral, for it could also resemble the blood vessels in the eye under a microscope, but I am more interested in the way the shapes move like tentacles or arms that reach out in perfect unison to perform the dance. #fromthesea #organiclines #hardedgepainting #abstractart #abstractpainting #color #chromestheticart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #contemporarypainting #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Music of the Spheres No. 28, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: For this painting, I am building upon my earlier overlapping spheres of four and now have seven. Instead of placing them diagonally or offset, I am placing them in one, large, vertical arrangement with additional bands of color gradation. The composition also works well if hung horizontally. This painting reveals the relationship between the two colors, magenta and yellow and how they interact as they get closer together and lighten as they move further apart which creates a back and forth rhythm. The two colors combine to make a rich, warm orange color. The magenta acts to cool the warm yellows and oranges. The visual, rhythmic movement of this minimalist painting has a calming and meditative effect. #musicofthespheres #opticalart #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #meditativeart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #sfbayareaartist #abstractart #contemporaryart #artnow #madsengallery @apmadsengallery

Music of the Spheres No. 14, acrylic polymer on canvas, 30 x 30: This series came about after I was reading about Pythagoras in his understanding that a form of music resonates from the movement of the celestial bodies. When you meditate on the center, the blue bands begin to emanate outwards toward the warmer colors and the green-golds on the outer bands create a calm that you feel in nature. #musicofthespheres #opticalart #emanations #chromestheticart #meditativeart #geometricart #geometricpainting #artcollectors #artforthehome #corporateart #interiordesigners #architect #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal

Chromatic Scale No. 2, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This series references the chromatic scale in music with the 12 bands of color representing the 12 notes of pitch. The two sections ascend and descend and meet together like two hands. The black and white references the black and white keys on the piano. The composition is also symbolic of infinity. #chromaticscale #infinity #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #contemporarypainting #abstractart #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #sfbayareaartist #color #morrisongallery #artnow @morrisongallery

Echo Series No. 7, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: This is my latest echo series painting on a square canvas which compliments the square pattern design. I came up with this design by moving 3-part squares that I designed until I came up with an interesting composition where it causes you to tilt your head to the left and to the right as you move to the rhythm of the music. I included the easel photo to show how I paint in an intuitive and random manner. Each color added changes the whole painting. My challenge is to keep the colors balanced and it becomes a color puzzle that I must solve. Portals No. 8, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: This minimalist painting echoes the colors of nature with its warm greens and cooler blue-greens. This was a big challenge for color mixing since the lime greens made the blue-greens appear bluer. I kept adding more green to them for the illusion of transparency to be effective but kept the central portal a little bluer to make the blue-greens appear greener and also to create a contrast. I like the way this painting feels warm and cool at the same time. #portals #opticalart #blueandgreen #colorsofnature #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #minimalism #meditativeart #chromestheticart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #geometricart #geometricpainting #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Variations on a Theme No. 20, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: For this painting, I made multiples of two intersecting planes, cut them out and played with them until I came up with this design, then made a black and white collage of it before drawing it up on the canvas. It is important to incorporate negative spaces into my compositions where they may be viewed as solid or empty spaces. I have mixed adjacent colors to achieve an illusion of transparency. I choose colors intuitively as I go making sure the colors remain balanced. Variations on a Theme No. 14, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: For this painting I began with a drawing and liked the way the shapes were offset which created a back and forth rhythmic movement and nice optical effect. I painted the colors intuitively to music balancing the warm and cool colors. I believe that the viewer is smart, and once they figure out the color pattern, they are done looking, which is why I prefer less predictability. The negative spaces are treated equally to the positive shapes. The white areas become rounded diamond shapes, help to create a float effect, can appear solid, as places of rest, and help the positive shapes to appear more 3-dimensional. It is also important that my paintings fill a room with a feeling of joy and exuberance. #variationsonatheme #opticalart #colorfieldpainting #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #abstractart #sfbayareaartist #bendergallery #artnow

Music of the Spheres No. 19, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This painting explores the interaction between red and violet. As the colors move closer together they become rich shades of reddish purple and as they move further apart they lighten to pink and lavender shades. The four spheres reveal an illusion of transparency using flat color fields. This painting also makes me think of an iris and the colors in Georgia O’Keefe’s red hill paintings. My painting is also about the sounds that resonate from the celestial bodies, it may also be viewed as non-representational, minimalistic and reductive. It is a good thing for a painting to connect with multiple thoughts, images and emotions which is a very natural process. #musicofthespheres #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #opticalart #chromestheticart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #reductiveart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #hardedgepainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

New painting, Portals No. 28, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This is my latest Portals painting where I repeated the measurements that are in my No. 27 painting. To the left of the central black portal, the black blends into soft reds and into a rich terracotta that lightens on the outer edge. To the right, the black blends into blue-grays to cobalt blue, to periwinkle, then to soft lavender-gray and dissipates as the eye moves outward. This painting was perhaps the most difficult since I had more colors and my aim was to work with new colors. The illusions of transparency and layering are very subtle and there are endless rectangular shapes to explore. Vertically, it works equally well and has the feeling of a modern landscape. #portals #opticalart #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #meditativeart #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artconsulting #artforthehome #corporateart #interiordesigners #architect #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

My Rite of Passage series were some of my early geometric paintings painted freehand in oil. The ten concentric circles mark the passage of time that recalls the past and suggests movement toward a future state. The viewer is not the passive onlooker but integral to the piece where the directional selection reflects the viewer’s state whether mental, emotional, spiritual or physical. The viewer may ascend or descend, receive or surrender. The colors jump to the opposite end of its adjacent color giving an optical illusion of a color gradation which always amazes me. #opticalart #meditativeart #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #colorfieldpainting #colortheory #minimalart #westcoastminimalism #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architecture #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist

Portals No. 12 is one of the two larger, minimalistic 60 x 60 Portals paintings that is part of my exhibition at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos. With this painting, I wanted to explore the interaction between a green-gold, a cool blue and light periwinkle with shades of gray, blue-gray and green gray. When I combine adjacent colors I am always surprised at the completely new colors that they create. I also wanted to see how far I could push toward earthy colors but keep them fresh with some brighter colors. The composition is strong and stable which gives me confidence to play with color, so each painting becomes a creative investigation and exercise in the exploration of color and how they interact with one another. #portals #madsengallery #bayareaartgallery #galleryart #losaltosart #opticalart #colortheory #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #meditativeart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #geometricart #geometricpainting #artcollectors #artadvisory #interiordesigners #artforthehome #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #artnow @apmadsengallery

The Stars Collide No. 2, acrylic polymer on canvas, 60 x 60: The stars sound as they collide. The bold, emotive, colorful circular bands vibrate as they radiate toward the center where one larger star appears. A celestial change has occurred. Music accompanies me when I paint. The senses converge to create a chromesthetic experience on the canvas which may evoke a visual sound, where new and unpredictable colors emerge intuitively. The spiraling rhythm carries the viewer about and to pause along the broken colors where halo effects glow along the edges to create a calming effect. #thestarscollide #opticalart #hardedgepainting #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Music of the Spheres No. 17, 21, 26, 27 & 25: Five of these Music of the Spheres paintings are now available through Madsen Gallery in Los Altos. These paintings are minimalistic, they have a planetary feel, are meditative, suggestive of sound, the composition is complex, there are optical illusions, transparent effects, movement and subtle color theory principles at work. These are qualities that I like to see in a painting. I believe that minimal designs are the most difficult because they need to be simple and complex at the same time to hold the viewer’s interest. New painting, Portals No. 27, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: For this painting I changed the widths of the vertical bands as well as the horizontal overlaps. The black central portal is larger to emphasize the colors as they darken and descend into the central area. The deep gray-blues become brighter blues as they move outward and soften to pale blues. The deep warmer grays transition into burnt oranges, to orange and to a lighter orange. The eye is first drawn to the black center, but the shifting of the layered rectangles rhythmically moves the eye back and forth from left to right and outwards and then moves you back to the center. This has a calming and meditative effect. There are many illusions of transparency and a lot of subtle color mixing, especially in the outer horizontal spaces, which can keep the eye wandering about this piece for a long time. #portals #opticalart #blueandorange #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #chromestheticart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigners #corporateart #architect #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #geometricart #geometricpainting

Variations on a Theme No. 23, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: This painting is inspired by the movement of the waves of the ocean. I enjoy playing with multiples of my 3- part design within a square and configuring them in different patterns. After coming up with the wave design I felt that it captured the way the waves crest and fall against the shore and then I made a collage of it before drawing it up in the canvas. I chose colors that captured the sky’s reflection on water at sunset. I paint the colors intuitively and working to keep the colors balanced. #variationsonatheme #thewave #opticalart #hardedgepainting #colorfieldpainting #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #abstractart #artnow

Music of the Spheres No. 30, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This is the third painting in this series where I aligned the overlapping spheres and created a more monochromatic color scheme. The painting reveals the interaction between red and pink as they move closer together and lighter as they move further apart. The sides create an illusion of transparency where the spheres overlap. The visual movement of ascending and descending has a back and forth rhythm that is calming and meditative and the colors are warming to the senses. This painting may also be hung horizontally. #musicofthespheres #redandpink #meditativeart #colorfieldpainting #opticalart #colortheory #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #interiordesigners #architect #artadvisory #artforthehome #corporateart #contemporarypainting #artnow #madsengallery #sfbayareaartist @apmadsengallery

Portals No. 21, acrylic polymer on canvas, 36 x 48: For this painting I designed the rectangular shapes to proportionately get smaller as the eye ascends upwards. This can be perceived as a minimal and non-representational painting, or perhaps, a modern landscape, a sunset or even sorbet ice cream. Each band contains a good amount of color from each adjacent band, but when viewed together, they become more distinct. The smaller bands step the viewer slowly into each band of color. I have slightly grayed the outer bands to cool the vibrant colors and to create a fade effect. The white negative spaces act as portals or windows that transport you to an alternate space. This painting is part of my current exhibition at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos, California. #portals #madsengallery #artexhibition #bayareaart #sfbayareaartist #opticalart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #minimalart #westcoastminimalism #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #geometricart #geometricpainting #artcollectors #artadvisory #interiordesigners #architect #artforthehome #corporateart #meditativeart #artnow @apmadsengallery

Variations on a Theme No. 30, acrylic polymer on canvas, 36 x 72: For this painting I wanted to paint a colorful minimal piece showing the interaction between three colors. I have mixed the outer hexagon shapes and the center reveals the combination of all three colors. There is a nice illusion of layering and a transparent effect. The two rows of hexagons connect in the center which creates an interesting diamond-shaped pattern, rhythm and also an interchange between the two rows. I like incorporating negative spaces into my compositions. The outer central arrows point inward and keep the viewer’s eye transfixed on the piece. This size works well above furniture, in stairwells, or in long hallways. #variationsonatheme #opticalart #minimalart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #galleryart #artnow

Euphonic Colour No. 20, acrylic polymer on canvas, 30 x 48: Euphonic Colour No. 20 is an optical painting where the circular openings represent how the ear takes in sound, and the connected wave is how music effects the emotions. With this painting, I chose to overlap the outer and inner sides of the cylinder to create an illusion of transparency and also the ability to visually enter at either side. The eye shifts back and forth from left to right which creates a nice rhythm and the wave sends you back and forth down the cylinders and then brings you back up into an infinite cycle. This has a meditative and calming effect and the different shades of green and blue reflect the colors of nature. #opticalart #chromestheticart #musicandpainting #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #interiordesigners #architects #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artforthehome #corporateart #artnow #green

Portals No. 18, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: For this Portals painting I chose to paint a deep blue blending into a cobalt blue, then to light teal, green, and yellow-green. The overlapping rectangles step into a minimal and modern landscape or restful place. The painting is minimalistic but very complex at the same time where the eye can’t figure out how many illusions of overlapping rectangles are present. This painting is meditative and calming and echoes the translucent colors of sea glass. #portals #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #minimalism #modernlandscape #opticalart #meditativeart #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #colorfieldpainting #colortheory #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #interiordesigners #architect #artforthehome #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Variations on a Theme No. 46, acrylic polymer on canvas, 60 x 60: This painting is part of my current Variations on a Theme exhibition at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos, California. I am pictured with gallery owner and friend, Amy Madsen, in front of my painting. My aim with this painting was to create a more monochromatic piece with blues, grays, turquoise, teals, olive green, green-blacks, and subtle whites. There are dominant horizontal bands, but rounded geometric shapes break free from any constraints, the whites float about the surface. The green and turquoise shapes move the eye diagonally along with the structural blacks and the eye ends up resting on the lower left olive green shapes and then to re-enter the painting through the larger dark teal shape on the lower right. There are nice optical effects and illusions of transparency and some shapes resemble wine glasses and decanters, or they can just be beautiful shapes. #variationsonatheme #madsengallery #artexhibition #losaltosart #opticalart #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #sfbayareaartist #bayareaart #artcollectors #artadvisory #artgallery #artforthehome #corporateart #interiordesigner #architect #contemporarypainting #artnow @apmadsengallery

Portals No. 26, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: Here is the vertical version of my new painting which gives the appearance of multiple layers of a modern landscape. The central black band acts as a horizon line, where below, the bands transitions into blues, teals and warm sea foam greens which feels like water. Above, the black blends into reds, oranges and glowing yellows which echoes the colors of a sunset sky. Horizontally, the painting becomes more abstract. I actually don’t believe that any painting can be totally non-representational, but prefer to look for a multiplicity of symbols and meanings. I can also see the evening, which represents the sunset, and the day which the blue and green represent, and both are our waking hours and converge into the central black portal, which is the night, our sleep, that transports us into our dream state. #portals #opticalart #modernlandscape #minimalart #westcoastminimalism #colortheory #chromestheticart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #geometricart #geometricpainting #colorfieldpainting #artcollectors #artadvisory #interiordesigners #architects #artforthehome #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Music of the Spheres No. 4, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: This painting is a continuation of the idea that a form of music resonates from the celestial bodies. Initially, the 25 large and orderly black spheres appear to the viewer, then the three colorful bands emerge that surround the spheres, each having unique colors which represent different sounds. There is a glow effect and emanation that moves outwards like the pupil of an eye and after dots pulsate rhythmically in the white negative spaces. #musicofthespheres #eclipse #chromestheticart #opticalart #opart #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architect #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Rhythm & Colour No. 26, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: For this painting I was inspired by my No. 3 painting. I cut the squares in half and rearranged them by hand into this composition. I then added an additional inner square. The white negative spaces create openings to give places of rest. The various sizes of black center squares represent different sounds. Adjacent colors are mixed to create an illusion of transparency. #rhythmandcolour #chromestheticart #colortheory #opticalart #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #geometricabstraction #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architects #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #moberggallery @moberggallery

Portals No. 23, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 72: This portals variation has an architectural feel where the bands create segmented curved walls or perhaps a fluted column that is shifted. A focal point is eliminated since the eye travels to each blackened portal in a diagonal zigzag movement which creates a nice rhythm. The black spaces can also be viewed as an interior space. The deep purples and wine colors have a deep sound that softens and warms as the bands move outwards. This outward movement is calming like an exhalation of breath. The colorful bands welcome the viewer to enter through the black portals which are suggestive of a new and unknown space. #portals #opticalart #architectural #colortheory #westcoastminimalism #minimalart #meditativeart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #corporateart #interiordesigners #contemporarypainting #artnow

Rhythm & Colour No. 32, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: After drawing the circular intersecting shapes onto the canvas with a compass and a lot of measuring, I begin by painting all the blacks which creates places of rest. I then start choosing and mixing colors which appear for me intuitively. It is important to see each pair in relation to all the other pairs. When I feel the color may be wrong I still go with it which usually ends up working well. I mix the two intersecting colors in varying amounts to achieve the center illusion of transparency. I also like to vary which shape appears on top of the other. The neutral centers create a calming effect to the vivid colors and there is a nice back and forth shift in movement between each pair of dots. The circular shapes create after dots in the white spaces and also emanate in low light. There is also a planetary feeling to this painting. #rhythmandcolour #opticalart #opart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #planetary #chromestheticart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigners #architects #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #julesplacegallery @julesplacegallery

I just finished this special commissioned painting of Euphonic Colour No. 17 in a 30 x 30 size which really looks nice on a smaller wall. With my Euphonic Colour series I combine color and sound. Euphonic in music refers to pleasing sounds. I have created paintings with 2, 4 and 6 cylindrical shapes and 3 with this painting. The circular openings represent how the ear takes in sound and the wave is how music affects the emotions. Creating 3-dimensional and optical effects with flat color fields is characteristic of my work. I like to show angled shots as well since paintings are seen at different viewpoints. #euphonic #opticalart #thewave #colorfieldpainting #artcommission #geometricart #geometricpainting #chromestheticart #color #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #corporateart #interiordesigner #architects #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Rhythm & Line No. 12, acrylic polymer on canvas, 36 x 72: Bands of bold color project forward, others quietly recede. The blacks are always painted first to set the rhythm. Initially, I cover the canvas with a line drawing of the smallest band, then erase to get the three or four different sizes. I then write down a numerical log of the pattern, then begin my painting. My paintings are like color puzzles that I must solve. I don’t like to plan the colors because this makes the painting too predictable, but prefer to follow my intuition where the colors appear in my mind naturally as I paint to music. I trust the process even when it feels risky. Each color added changes the whole painting which always amazes me. #rhythmandline #opticalart #hardedgepainting #chromestheticart #color #geometricart #geometricpainting #geometricabstraction #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigner #architects #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

NOW at MADSEN 💞 One-woman show featuring Angela Johal opening Thursday. She and her husband meticulously hung 21 paintings yesterday. Since then with doors open, we have had three serious inquiries on this piece. We so wonder who will be taking it home 🤔 Images and copy below by Angela Johal. Portals No. 7, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: For this painting, I began with a cool magenta for the central portal and decided to gradually add a warmer pink as you move outwards to the left and to the right horizontally. It is also important for the viewer to visually shift between the horizontal and vertical shapes. Vertically, the magenta lightens and an illusion of purple is created when viewed next to the warmer pinks. The transparent effects, subtle color shifts and the way the colors jump to the adjacent color planes gives an illusion of color gradation which makes the painting appear to be lit from the back. #portals #opticalart #pink #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #chromestheticart #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #westcoastminimalism #minimalism #minimalistart #meditativeart #geometricart #geometricpainting #geometricabstraction #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigner #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist @losaltos #losaltoshillls #paloalto

Yesterday we helped to install my exhibition, Variations on a Theme, at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos which will open to the public this Thursday, on April 4. The opening reception is this Saturday, April 6, from 5-7 pm. My precise architect husband brought a laser level on a tripod, string, measuring tape and a drawn up plan on paper to make sure everything was installed properly. All 21 paintings are hung and here are a few photos. New painting, Rhythm & Colour No. 37, acrylic polymer on canvas, 36 x 36: This new painting will be included in my exhibition at Madsen Gallery which opens this week. There are twenty pairs of intersecting dots where each two colors are mixed in varying amounts to create the illusion of transparency. Each dot color jumps to the opposite end of the intersecting color which also gives the center an illusion of a color gradation. I have chosen to have the dots touch so that the negative spaces reveal rounded diamond shapes which strengthens the composition. There is also a back and forth rhythm where the two dots shift from below to on top of one another. #rhythmandcolour #madsengallery #opticalart #opart #colortheory #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigner #corporateart #losaltosart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow @apmadsengallery

Rhythm & Line No. 18, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 72: With this painting I created four sizes of horizontal bands that jog to achieve an optical effect where the lighter and deeper colored vertical bands alternate rhythmically forwards and backwards. The thinner outer bands both repeat the color pattern to frame the painting and appear to be continuing beneath the seven bands. I challenged myself to use mainly mixed colors, creating some colors that I have never seen before. The brighter and darker values create pauses which help to slow the eye. The up and down rhythmic movement of this painting is both calming to the emotions and energetic at the same time. This painting may also be hung vertically. This painting will be included in my exhibition that opens this week at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos, California. Music of the Spheres No. 27 in yellow, olive and gray is the last of the series of twelve paintings that represent a minimalistic view that has design qualities that I like to see: It has a planetary feel, is meditative, interactive, is suggestive of sound, the composition is complex, it has optical illusions, transparent effects, movement, subtle color theory principles and is uplifting. This series has challenged me to use larger flat color fields that may require up to three coats of paint and a higher degree of precision. The warm yellows and grays combine to create rich shades of gold and olive and fade to lighter yellow and gray as they move further apart. The spheres gently lift upwards which takes your emotions in this same positive direction. This painting will be part of my exhibition that opens next week at Madsen Gallery in Los Altos, Ca. #musicofthespheres #madsengallery #colorfieldpainting #colortheory #planetary #yellowandgray #geometricart #geometricpainting #artexhibition #losaltosart #angelajohalart #angelajohalgeometry #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #contemporarypainting #minimalartwork #sfbayareaartist #meditativeart @apmadsengallery

You Hear the Colours No. 4, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This is the last of the series of the You Hear the Colours series of paintings inspired by a season of concert going and looking at how color, light and sound effects the emotions. I am interested in the place where heaven meets earth, the place where music can take you. I purposefully angled the off-center line so it would not feel like a landscape if placed horizontally or a structure if placed vertically. This composition seems to work no matter what direction it is placed, it has an energizing and uplifting effect on the emotions and a sense of sound emanating from the bright beams of color. #hearingcolors #lightshow #perspectivepainting #colorfieldpainting #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigner #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow #hardedgepainting

Diamond Series No. 12, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: For this painting, my aim was to create a composition where the pattern appears to be regular, but is actually quite varied and has a nice rhythm to it. The colors are chosen intuitively with no preplanning because I believe the viewer is smart and once they figure out the pattern and colors, they are done looking which is why I prefer not to make my paintings predictable. I like the way the two sections of triangular shapes form vertical elongated diamonds that can also connect up into larger diamond shapes, can look like trees, and the diagonals also connect up into slanted band formations which move the eye diagonally which adds movement. The vertical rectangles are repeated in the horizontal rectangular bands and the strong verticals are balanced by the horizontal divisions which also create optical effects where the colors and shapes shift. #diamondseries #opticalart #hardedgepainting #colorfieldpainting #chromestheticart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigner #corporateart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #abstractart #artnow

Portals No. 16, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: With this minimalistic portals painting I explored the relationships between shades of terracotta, gold, pink, gray, taupe and off-white. I wanted the central portal to dominate and the transparent gold to soften its color and emphasize its verticality and then step into lighter terracottas, subtle transparent pinks, grays, taupe and off-white with the horizontal shapes quieting the strong central hues. The gray, taupe and off-white colors also act to cool the warmer pink and terracotta shades. A light gray wall works really well with this painting. #portals #opticalart #colortheory #colorfieldpainting #minimalart #westcoastminimalism #meditativeart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #artcollectors #artadvisory #artforthehome #interiordesigner #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist #artnow

Falling Colour No. 2, oil on canvas, 48 x 60: My first geometric paintings were all painted in oil and freehand. For an exhibition, I needed to paint a large geometric painting with no time for the painting to dry, so I decided to use heavy body acrylics and tape the edges. I was so surprised that the colors were more vibrant, the edges were sharper and the drying time was fast. Also, I have found that varnishing acrylic paintings gives them a smoother and even surface look in the end. This is when I decided to transition away from oil painting. My first Falling Colour was painted in cool colors to echo the color and movement of a waterfall and here I wanted to paint a warm, sunset version of it. There is an optical effect where if placed horizontally, the vertical bands separate and there is a shift in the colors which gives the feeling of water falling from above. If placed vertically, the darker central shapes echo falling water. #fallingcolour #waterfall #opticalart #geometricart #geometricpainting #angelajohalgeometry #angelajohalart #johalgeometrics #angelajohal #chromestheticart #artcollectors #artadvisory #artconsulting #artforthehome #interiordesigner #corporateart #abstractart #contemporarypainting #sfbayareaartist

Portals No. 9, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: During the day I like to take a break from painting and go out in the garden and pick flowers and arrange them. The crocosmia with their orange-red flame like flowers inspired me to use these brilliant colors. The bright reds and oranges glow like a flame along the horizontal center area, and cooler coral shades emphasize the vertical layering of shapes.
