There is also a shift where the eye sees an upper dot on top and then a lower one. Rhythm & Colour No. 32, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: After drawing the circular intersecting shapes onto the canvas with a compass and a lot of measuring, I begin by painting all the blacks which creates places of rest. I then start choosing and mixing colors which appear for me intuitively. It is important to see each pair in relation to all the other pairs. When I feel the color may be wrong I still go with it which usually ends up working well. I mix the two intersecting colors in varying amounts to achieve the center illusion of transparency. I also like to vary which shape appears on top of the other. The neutral centers create a calming effect to the vivid colors and there is a nice back and forth shift in movement between each pair of dots. The circular shapes create after dots in the white spaces and also emanate in low light. New painting, Rhythm & Colour No. 37, acrylic polymer on canvas, 36 x 36: This new painting will be included in my exhibition at Madsen Gallery which opens this week. There are twenty pairs of intersecting dots where each two colors are mixed in varying amounts to create the illusion of transparency. Each dot color jumps to the opposite end of the intersecting color which also gives the center an illusion of a color gradation. I have chosen to have the dots touch so that the negative spaces reveal rounded diamond shapes which strengthens the composition. Rhythm & Colour No. 21, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: For this painting, I turned the intersecting dots on the diagonal which allows me to include more dots. There is a nice rhythm and movement and the eye moves diagonally upward and downwards simultaneously. The composition works equally well when placed vertically. Adjacent colors are mixed in varying proportions to achieve the illusion of transparency of the dots and I try to vary which dot appears on top. The colors are chosen intuitively and I don’t allow myself to look at any of my previous paintings color combinations, but find that I naturally like certain colors together. After dots appear in the white negative spaces the longer you look at the painting. Rhythm & Colour No. 4, acrylic polymer on canvas, 30 x 48: For this painting I used the golden ratio of for the rectangular shapes which is a beautiful proportion. The canvas size is also close to the same proportion and works well with the shapes. For the illusion of transparency, I mixed the two adjacent colors to create a blend in the central rectangular overlap. The rectangles appear orderly and still, but the longer you look, rectangular after images begin to pulsate in the white negative spaces which creates a nice rhythm. Rhythm & Colour No. 2, 32 Colours, 47 Colours, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: One day I was irritated and stuck in traffic when, behold, I was stopped behind this amazing traffic sign. I was now excited to get home and play with the design. I came up with a drawing of two variations of it and created two paintings from the drawings. I really like the way the central diagonal dots line up to connect the two shapes. After painting my first Rhythm & Colour painting, I realized that the intersecting dots would work for 32 Colours. This added a nice back and forth rhythm of the dots and an illusion of transparency, along with its zigzag movement and dancing after dots in the white spaces. Rhythm & Colour No. 27 & 29, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60, 48 x 48: I love the challenge of painting dots in new ways. For these dot paintings I wanted them to feel like the dots were lifting off. I combined two dots, created gray shadows and added gray to the lower dot color and white to the upper dot. The contrast needed to be subtle for the soft upward movement to occur. There is both a 3-dimensional and transparent illusion present which is characteristic of my work. Rhythm & Colour No. 34, acrylic polymer on canvas, 60 x 60: This painting is about the color relationships between the two colors in each grouping of four spheres and how they interact and change as they get closer together and further apart. The centers reveal the rich color which is a mixture of both colors and the lighter outer bands lift the eye upwards diagonally and the white negative spaces help to emphasize this movement and bring the spheres to life, moving the eye rhythmically back and forth which has a calming effect. The centers create an illusion of transparency which is achieved by mixing the two dot colors. The white negative spaces reveal two sizes of rounded diamond shapes which strengthens the design. There is a back and forth rhythm that energizes the painting where the two dots shift from below to on top of one another and another shift between the two intersecting dots. 🙌 MEET THE FELLOWS – Parul Singh is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the research and fellowship program 4A_Lab: Art Histories, Archaeologies, Anthropologies, Aesthetics, a collaboration between the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck Institute and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz @spkberlin, based in Berlin. Parul received her Ph.D. from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. She has been awarded the NTICVA (Nehru Trust for the Indian Collection at Victoria and Albert Museum) UK Visiting Fellowship (2015), the NTICVA- CWIT (Charles Wallace India Trust) joint study grant (2016), the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation travel grant (2015), and a study grant by the John Bissell Foundation (2017). In her 4A_Lab research project she focuses on the exploration of the gardens of the Indian palace complex Qaiserbagh (or “Caesar’s Garden”) in Lucknow, between myth, reality and illusion. In the framework of her 4A_Lab fellowship she is also working with the Museum für Islamische Kunst [Museum of Islamic Art] in Berlin, where she has already co-curated her second exhibition: “Rhythm and Colour. Musical Scenes on Indian Album Leaves of the 16th to 18th Century” which ran from 28 March to 25 June 2023 in the museum’s Book Art Cabinet. Rhythm & Colour No. 18, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 48: For this painting there are 20 pairs of intersecting dots where each two colors are mixed in varying amounts to create the illusion of transparency. Each dot color jumps to the opposite end of the intersecting color which also gives the center an illusion of a color gradation. I have chosen to have the dots touch so that the negative spaces reveal rounded diamond shapes which strengthens the composition. Varnishing is an important part of my painting process because every paint color has a different sheen and varnish evens out all the colors and also gives the painting a smooth surface. I prefer a satin to gloss because too much sheen distracts from the details and too matte clouds the painting. I always wear white to prevent lint from showing up in the varnish and I keep all windows and doors shut because varnish is irresistible to bugs! I also let the varnish cure for a week before I wrap the painting or ship it out. I painted two more dot sections of my new 60 x 60 Rhythm & Colour No. 34 piece mixing a Light Green (Blue Shade) with a Mars Black and tinting the outer sections with Titanium White. Today in the studio I am getting ready to varnish Rhythm & Colour No. 33. Varnishing is a whole day process where I apply 2 coats of gloss Liquitex varnish and a final coat of gloss mixed with matte. The gloss layers give clarity and the satin coat cuts down on the sheen. I wait at least 3 hours in between coats. The result is a very smooth look and it also protects the painting. Rhythm & Colour No. 33 (60 x 60) is now finished except for varnishing. I always let the paint cure for 1 day before I varnish. It is very interesting how the left band of color will jump to the right of the center & the right band color will jump to the left of the center which creates an illusion of a color gradation in the center where the two dots overlap. Also, sometimes the mix of two colors will match two completely different color combinations and I will need to adjust the color to appear different. It’s day 4 working on my 60 x 60 Rhythm & Colour No. 33 painting. I have completed 18 of the intersecting dots. It is important to see each pair in relation to all the other pairs & if the eye is drawn to certain colors, the eye must keep moving rhythmically around the piece. The texture diminishes after the final varnishes. After drawing the circles with a compass, I begin painting the blacks. I mix the two intersecting colors in varying amounts to achieve the center illusion of transparency. I also like to vary which circle appears on top of the other. The neutral centers create a calming effect to the vivid colors. The 48 x 24 will work especially well on a smaller wall space that is a focal point. I enjoyed painting larger intersecting dots. Rhythm & Colour: I love the challenge of painting dots in new ways. For Rhythm & Colour No. 27 & 29 I wanted the dots to feel like they are lifting off. I combined two dots, created gray shadows and added gray to the lower dot color and white to the upper dot. The contrast needed to be subtle for the soft upward movement to occur. After dots also appear and dance about rhythmically in the white areas.
