I'm so in love with the process of ice dyeing. Just sprinkle it on and let it melt! I have always love process that give you a fun surpise at the end, it's so theraputic to be able to create without overthinking the design and letting fate take over a little bit! Two sample sized solar dye experiments using some dried black hollyhock. I wish this flower had better light fastness. I’ll still use it. (And I have in several knitting projects) But like with all #naturaldyes that have this issue, I keep the color shift in mind when planning how I want to use it. For the direct iron mordant ( also called rust dyeing) I love how the gold rust spots powered through. Iron can be rough on fiber, so not sure if this is the best method for mordanting. Last time I tried slow solar process dyeing it was a flop, but I’m experimenting again with the hope that I can do this with one of my classes in 2 weeks. I added extra alum to some of the jars to see if that helps. Also trying some spices this time which I’ve never done. I’ve got cinnamon, paprika, turmeric, onion skins, and black walnut. I figure if all else fails the black walnut will still work. Open to suggestions! The turmeric is already looking nice, let’s just hope it’s not fugitive! Solar dyeing is my favorite dye method. Zero energy, other than the sun, even with these short days! It just takes longer. Another cool thing about solar dyeing is that the color of the fibers may change radically over time. Just pull your fiber out of the jar when you’re happy with the color 👍👍 The first shot is preparing the silk scarves to be dyed. #solardye results with #milkweed. I first became fascinated with this #plant after reading about its #fiber and I learned to identify it as we were driving past on the highway. The first two skeins of #wool were #dyed with rust (starting from the top). The next three were the full plant (stems, leaves flower) with #alum. The next two with copper and the next two with tin.

Almost a year ago, I put together a #solardye jar with 100g of #llanwenog yarn from #wynchwoodspinner on Etsy with #alum #mordant and what felt like a billion of the #marigolds I grew. Yesterday, I went ahead and got them washed and dried. Lot of work picking out marigold seeds, and I did not catch them all! That's okay. They'll get picked out while the yarn is worked up! Here is my new, pretty #yarn. One #skein is a bit lighter than the other (it didn't have as many flowers near it) and it should make for a lovely #ombre effect once it's been #nalbound into a #scarf I'll be reusing this #dye (with some of this year's #flowers added to refresh it) on some #lonk yarn that will become #handwarmers next year to complete the set. Super, super, super pleased with the outcome of my initial foray into #naturaldye and am definitely #inspired to continue on with this method as well as to learn faster methods of #dyeing
Rabbitbrush grows all over the place here in Colorado. It is a useful plant both for animals, who use it for shelter, and pollinators who suckle the sweet nectar of its bright yellow flowers. The Native Americans used the plant as a dye plant, for basketry, as a medicinal tea and for chewing gum. I gleaned my rabbitbrush from the roadsides where I live (not at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve where it is pictured). I solar dyed and used the crockpot, using alum as a mordant and throwing in rusty objects, pieces of copper pipe and some tin as modifiers. I am really pleased with the results.

Meine letzte Solarfärbung 2023 ☀️ Auch die Southdown Fasern habe ich noch in frische Holunderbeeren eingelegt, weil mir die Farbe einfach so gut gefallen hat 😁 Und auch die hat mich nicht im Stich gelassen. Ein sehr schönes lila. Die Fasern werden dann im Winter zu Sockenwolle verarbeitet 😊 Übrigens habe ich von diesem Färbewasser und vom Walnusswasser Pigment hergestellt. Meine vorletzte Solarfärbung ☀️ durfte ihr Glas verlassen. Das waren Wilde Malvenblüten. Im Glas war nicht viel zu sehen. Bei Wärme wurde es leicht rosa. Ich habe Dann Zitronensäure dazu gegeben und noch einen Tag stehen lassen. Das wurde richtig neon pink 😂 Aber beim auswaschen wieder die Ernüchterung, vom rosa/pink ist kaum was geblieben 😢 Aber schön ist es trotzdem 😊 Ist halt immer eine Überraschung! Jetzt ist es ein (sehr altes) Alt-Rosa 😋 Gefärbt auf der Schoppel Admiral. Meine letzte Solarfärbung durfte auch schon ausziehen, die zeige ich euch dann die nächsten Tage. I’ve just finished the process of my first botanical solar dyed skein of yarn! I started this out of my mum’s garden in some of the final hot days of Labor Day weekend, then added some city sidewalk flowers to the mix partway through. Een maand geleden stopte ik witte wol in een glazen pot, tesamen met een handjevol walnoten in schil. De walnoten had ik eerst een flinke mep verkocht met een hamer, zodat ze nogal beurs waren. Gevuld met water en een een plekje in de zon gegeven. Die zon doet het hem, zeggen ze. Nou, dat kun je wel zeggen! Eerder snapte ik niet zo goed waarom je met walnoot zou verven, bruine wol genoeg, toch? Maar het is niet hetzelfde, weet ik nu. Nature’s colour #palette I made this to go in our kitchen the other day, it was a good exercise in consolidating some of the colours I’ve achieved through natural dyeing. Now it’s in a frame, each column has a strip of card over part of it so I can assess the colour fastness. I love that the colours will inevitably fade a little but want to know to what degree - it’s an extension of the palette. Grade 4 students in Mrs. Osgood’s handwork class have started the process of dying silk embroidery thread for their various projects this year. The students are using a sun dye method with natural materials such as onion skins, poke berries, osage and spearmint. Colorful jars filled with water, pigment and thread are lined up outdoors to catch the afternoon sun. It’s a treat for the eyes to watch the colors start to emerge.
