In both of these workshops, Sara hopes to help us to build a deeper relationship with the earth and specific places and to encourage climate action inspired by emotion. Sara sees many climate activists working to promote change with numbers, facts, and figures; she hopes to complement this more rational side of the story with a more affective and meditative angle, which may speak more deeply to many of us. Sara (she/her) is a Porty resident who believes that sharing our diverse perspectives and questioning our value systems are essential parts of navigating the current changes we are facing together on this Earth. She has trained in yoga and alternative learning practices, holding an MSc in Outdoor Education from the University of Edinburgh. The inspiration for her workshops comes from Dr. Robbie Nicol’s course, Outdoor Environmental Education: Concept-Based Practice. These are drop-in workshops on the day of the Sea Rising Festival. Some shots from my studio this week. “Signs of Spring1”-Working at larger scale requires a lot of new experiments and techniques. I had to redo the large leaves, -remove pigments entirely and reapply with larger amounts of pigment and larger brushes. Here I used a technique called Tarashikomi (drip pigment into wet pigment). I like the new results. “Signs of Spring 2”-After the fourth application of layers of colors, midnight blue 花藍, deep purple紫, and a mix of orange 朱and yellow 黄 (Japanese suihi mineral pigments) and a lot of water, I am officially done with the background! We urge you to explore the artwork of Alastair & Fleur Mackie – @alastairandfleurmackie – whose collaborative practice is a story of borrow and give-back. Constructed from painstakingly sourced and transformed site-specific objects, their works possess a cyclical quality; building a dialogue with the place they were found, sparking connections across time and presenting commentary on environmental change. They’ve lived and worked by the coast in North Cornwall since 2011 – the landscape of which has played a central part in the shaping of their shared vocabulary. Here we see stacked column-like sculptures made from fishing industry trawl floats recovered from the shoreline. It seems to us that their practice is an act of cleansing: the foreign bodies choking their local rocky shore are dislodged; letting the land breathe, whilst simultaneously giving us – the viewer – a sense of both calm and quiet apprehension. In a New York City of the future, a ferry worker, a family of snack-obsessed rats, a teenage cyborg, and a protest artist named Tr@sh Smith work together (and sometimes against each other) to survive a series of floods, all the while trying resist the gentrification of the city by the mysterious Big Tech Big Bros company. A little sneak peek at my sculptural installation ‘Fleet’ for @freshairsculpture 2024 - opening on 16th June for 3 weeks. Hopefully a fun, poetic and poignant message about the desperate state of the world’s oceans, rivers and lakes suffering from our abuse & neglect. My bleached porcelain fish are leaping from the water (metaphorically toxic, polluted and uninhabitable) in search of a new home, an allegory of jumping out of a burning building only to meet your inevitable demise. A harsh choice and one I fear we will all face if we do not change our ways. The best way to save sealife is to stop eating it. Not as many believe by not using single use plastics (though it certainly helps). But don’t take my word for it, do your own research and make an informed choice. 'End of a Fairytale' Oil on linnen paper 32x29 cm Perhaps a slightly different approach to day 15 of the 2024 Mermay challenge with the topic being 'coral'. Thinking of coral I envision these beautiful patches of reef splashed with bright and vibrant colours decorating the ocean floor. Teeming with life they are like tiny oases lying hidden beneath the waves. But thinking about it I couldn't help seeing in my minds eye all of those white and grey fields of bleached coral you see in the news lately. Due to polution and the rapidly increasing temperatures of our great oceans the coral reefs are dying in many places in the world. My concern is for these reefs and the fragile beings that live in them and struggle to survive. Human footprint is noticable in almost every place on our beautiful earth and that is what I wanted to show in this painting. So can we turn the tide and let this story still have a happy ending? My film “The Desert Lives” (2022) in the mind-blowing exhibition “PROTEST/ARCHITECTURE: Barricades, Camps, Superglue” at MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, still open till 25/08/2024. Protests have to be disruptive to be effective. When protest movements extend into public space and take root there, when they blockade, defend, and seize these spaces, they produce protest architecture. The exhibition “PROTEST/ARCHITECTURE: Barricades, Camps, Superglue” explores the spatial aspects of protest cultures. The focus is on political movements that have manifested themselves in public space and produced specific architecture and design objects. An exhibition of the @architekturmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, and the MAK – @mak_vienna. “The Desert Lives” (2022) follows the occupation “desert” (Wüste) in Vienna over five months. In September 2021 climate activists blocked the building machinery to stop construction of the Lobau freeway and the “Stadtstraße” (city road). The environmental movement Lobau bleibt was subjected to multiple forms of repression such as threatening legal letters from a law firm representing Vienna city council. “The Desert Lives” is structured around three on-camera discussions in October 2021, December 2021 and January 2022, in which action participants debate the status and prospects of the occupation. A three-floor wooden pyramid was built by the activists themselves, an iconic structure for the resistance of this movement, and destroyed by the police on February 1, 2022. 48 activists were arrested, and the felling of hundreds of trees began.
