Taro Yamamoto 1919-1994 Through 5/26 Abstract Expressionist painter Taro Yamamoto was associated with the New York School in the 1950s. Descended from a long line of Shinto priests, the Hollywood-born artist moved to Japan as a young child to receive a traditional education. He returned to the U.S. in the late 1930s, studying Cubist painting at Los Angeles City College before relocating to New York, where he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York and Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts. Yamamoto became involved in the burgeoning Abstract Expressionist movement. Unlike superstar Ab-Ex artists Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, however, Yamamoto took varied approaches to abstraction, including hard-edge and action painting, with both gestural and geometric forms, sometimes within a single work. I am pretty proud of this print, since I put a lot of thought into it, and it was a very difficult printing. Its inspiration comes from a gift my good friend @philjimeneznyc gave me a few weeks ago. He called it “a sliver of time,” and it consisted of the inner workings of a watch, the cogs, springs and wheels. The gift moved me deeply, and it led me to think about each person’s relationship with time, especially in connection to Provincetown. This custom set of 4 (one is not shown as it’s still a surprise) @keithmaclelland Original Mounted Wall Buoys has just been completed for a local collector. By special request the frames were all white washed to better match the beach house decor of the main living space where they’ll soon be installed. In fact everything about this set was custom, the buoy colors, patterns, bead-board backgrounds, white washed frames, and even the addition of the Provincetown zip code on the far left piece, 02657. We love how these turned out, and can’t wait to see them installed! And we especially love working one-on-one with clients to make the art they’re purchasing uniquely suited just for them. Taro Yamamoto 1919-1994 Through 5/26 Abstract Expressionist painter Taro Yamamoto was associated with the New York School in the 1950s. Descended from a long line of Shinto priests, the Hollywood-born artist moved to Japan as a young child to receive a traditional education. He returned to the U.S. in the late 1930s, studying Cubist painting at Los Angeles City College before relocating to New York, where he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York and Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts. Yamamoto became involved in the burgeoning Abstract Expressionist movement. Unlike superstar Ab-Ex artists Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, however, Yamamoto took varied approaches to abstraction, including hard-edge and action painting, with both gestural and geometric forms, sometimes within a single work. I usually leave my frames natural, but with a clear coat to protect from stains. However, a recent commision through @dozen.studio.gallery requested that I white wash the four frames for the client’s pieces. I was a little skeptical, but am really digging the “beachy” effect. Now I can’t wait to install the finished pieces into them! I think they’re going to make an awesome set. Stay tuned, will post the framed up and completed works soon!
