Karen has always had an eye for creating beautiful things. She retired to the Cape after 20 years as an interior decorator in CT. Her most rewarding projects were those that included designing and painting wall murals for clients. Now that she lives on the Cape she has turned to painting on canvas! Most of her paintings start en plain air and then are completed in her studio in Brewster. She begins with a quick sketch on the canvas to establish the composition, then lays in the dark areas before adding the light areas. When the values are right, it is time to adjust the color. The last touch is the “wink” or the detail that grabs you. Oil is my medium of choice. She has studied with several Cape artists including William Davis, Rosalie Nadeau, Steve Kennedy, Susan Overstreet and Maryalice Eisenberg. She is a member of the Creative Art Center, Cape Cod Art Center and the Yarmouth Art Guild. She has volunteered at the Cape Cod Museum as a docent since moving to the Cape in 2009.

Provincetown Richard Cuencas holds a silver ring in his hand. “This was once a fork,” he says. “And this is made with black coral from the beach.” He points to a barrette he made by hand. Cuencas, whose R.C. Jewelry shop is in Whaler’s Wharf, will be one of 15 vendors showing and selling their work at the Makers Market on May 18 and 19 at the Provincetown Commons. Cuencas works in all kinds of metals, from aluminum and brass to silver and gold. He likes to recycle: “I make stuff out of aluminum cooking trays and copper shutters,” he says. He uses a piece of railroad track to hammer and texture the metals. It could be interpreted as a boat on the water or a bird in the sky. This made me consider creating more of these ambiguous shapes floating in a sea of blue, fog, or darkness. I think I'll call this series FLOAT or FLOW, so the shapes can symbolize whatever the viewer imagines - birds soaring in the sky or boats drifting in the harbor. For this next group of works, I'll play with my vibrant, Calder-esque abstract forms gliding, floating, and flying through a blue sea or dark sky. I opened my eyes to find a peregrine falcon landing on the ledge of my deck, not 20 feet away. A lightning bolt suspended between earth and sky, she stared into my eyes. There was no need for breath. The planets, that were her eyes, took me outside of space and time. Holy, feels too humble a word, to describe her presence. Those golden feet, that came long before humans ever breathed. Her chest speckled with the blackness of space, the same dimension that brought her here, now, is all I could think. Eventually, she turned her gaze away and flew off silently. But her presence has never left me. She sits with me still. When I see her flying, the truest piece of me, is flying too. This body of work came from her visit.
