It’s rare for the public to have an opportunity to look through a portfolio exchange of print works. “Resonance in Print” on view at the Sonoma Community Center has 6 different portfolios on display waiting for you to explore! Often portfolios are distributed among the participants and shelved in collections. But they are a beautiful way for artists to collaborate and engage in dialogue around a shared concept through their artwork, documenting our contemporaneous perspectives. It also records an array of techniques and materials, a treasure for artists to hold. Plus… every participant gets one of each exquisite artwork! “Light Falls Through the Edges” an editioned screen print, included in the “A Dialogue in Print” portfolio exchange between the California Society of Printmakers and Print Club of Rochester, with 20 participating artists. On View in “Resonance in Print” at the Sonoma Community Center Gallery 212. One copy is heading to the Bancroft Library collection at UC Berkeley; another is placed with an archive in Rochester. As the background light falls through the branch openings it illuminates those physical forms. Light is dragged along, distorting the optics and image clarity. Even with this abstracted quality, the trees’ presence remains recognizable. Both soft edged and boldly defined, emphasizing the romantic quality of these fragmented silhouettes and the glow that slips through. “Light Falls Through the Edges” explores an illuminated landscape through color separated layers. Title "Peace to Ron" 95"x 48"x 48" Painted steel Available This new sculpture is a tribute to and in memory of Ron Collins, a dear friend to so many, who left us on his journey to the heavens on April 5, 2024. In this piece I used several symbolic elements in the composition to capture the essence of time in the course of life. The steps shape ascending upwards, from which I cut out a trapezoid, created a void in the treads, somewhat akin to a hurdle in life's journey. The void now its own separate entity becomes a sail to catch the wind, while its rotation determines the course of life. The branded Peace sign, a very powerful symbol, is one that we would all like to reach when we pass on. It is made from an old roll of wide elastic. I worked the elastic on my form to create the halter top and skirt. It is made of leftover basketry material, salvaged pleating paper, and strips of packing material. My model @jesspeabody did a wonderful job of making the outfit come alive, channeling her ballet training to the music of a Bach prelude. Making a Wabi-Sabi Book with Sherrie Lovler. In Person class at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, Sebastopol, California. April 20-21, 2024 1-4pm To register: https://www.sebarts.org/classes-lectures/making-a-wabi-sabi-book The Japanese concept of wabi-sabi is to see beauty in the imperfections of life. This allows us to relinquish control and appreciate natural things that happen—such as the magic of ink touching water, or the gestural marks we make without planning. We will start with a short meditation and poem to bring us back to the center of our bodies. Then, using Asian brushes and sumi ink, we will create calligraphic lines that express movement and calmness. Contrast will be a key focus, giving our pages more expression and interest. On the second day, we will be cutting and folding our work to create a Japanese stab bound book. No experience needed.
