Esse movimento também envolve a Liga Acadêmica de Enfermagem na Saúde do Adulto (LAESA), formada por estudantes e professores da Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul, a Associação Brasileira de Parentes e Amigos de Vítimas de Acidentes Aéreos (ABRAPAVAA) e a empresa Melhoramentos. A campanha, que já garantiu mobilização e envio de mais de 20 profissionais de saúde ao Rio Grande do Sul, conta com uma lista com mais de 60 voluntários que aguardam chamamento para embarque. Os voluntários estão atuando em São Leopoldo, município próximo a Porto Alegre, e que tem mais 180 mil desabrigados e 80% dos bairros impactados pela inundação. O cadastro dos voluntários – médicos(as) e enfermeiros(as) – é feito por meio de um formulário disponível no perfil da LAESA no Instagram (@laesa.ucs2024). Altario School, nestled right on the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, is spearheading an initiative to address a critical question: Can an indoor hydroponic system provide consistent, year-round, affordable, and nutrient-rich feed for cattle? The K-12 school, known for its student-led farm and commitment to agricultural education, has received a substantial boost in the form of $199,000 from Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR). This funding comes under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, supported by both the federal and provincial governments. The heart of the project lies in investigating whether an indoor hydroponic system can provide a reliable and consistent source of feed for cattle. Hydroponics, which involves growing plants without soil, offers several advantages. By controlling environmental factors such as light, temperature, and nutrients, Altario School hopes to create a year-round supply of high-quality feed for livestock. To help achieve this goal, Altario School is collaborating with local members of the agriculture industry,. hydroponic system manufacturers, nutritionists, accountants, and college research teams. This combined effort involves eight organizations working together to find innovative solutions to the challenges posed by drought. STARTER INTAKE 🐮 Calves are a very controversial topic and the research is ever-changing. When speaking about starter specifically, here's some Monday Tidbits: ◾️Starter is what develops the rumen, specifically the carbohydrates to create VFAs to feed the newborn rumen. ◾️This will NOT happen without WATER. ◾️Feeding over 8L/day of milk/replacer is okay, but it will prolong starter intake to a later age. ◾️ Starter should be introduced in highly palatable forms by the age of 3 days to nibble on. The Oxeye Daisy may look like a pretty wildflower, but it’s an aggressive invader of Alberta pastures and rangelands. Its biggest impact is on cattle grazing. Cows avoid this flower, so any pastures infested with dense Oxeye will decrease forage available for grazing. Other livestock like sheep, goats and horses will readily graze Oxeye Daisy and can be used in companion grazing situations to help control it. Herbicides and mowing are also effective ways of dealing with Oxeye. Heifer Rearing Goals 🐮 Give your heifers the best start and prep them for the future of your herd. You have roughly two years to prepare for next 30% of your milking herd (being 1st lactation). Here's some growth goals for holsteins you should strive for: 1️⃣ Birth Weight: around 40-43kg and get that colostrum and transition milk into them! 2️⃣ Weaning: More than double birth weight by weaning. Around 10 weeks, goal is to be 115kg. 3️⃣ Breeding Age: Roughly 55% of mature weight. This will be roughly 400-420kg around that 13-14M old. 4️⃣ 1st Calving: Around 22-24M old for 1st calving, the goal for these animals is ~85% of mature weight. Somewhere around 650kg for a modern day holstein. 5️⃣ Mature Cow: Depending on your genetics, most mature cows sit around 760kg today on average. The goal is to get them close to that by end of 2nd lactation to avoid a minimal "sophomore slump". Branding day! The crowd always changes slightly on who was able to come and help, but the job gets done and the food is great 👌🏻 This year, our 8 year old graduated from the marking crayon to wrestling. Some of these calves are almost triple his weight, and my favorite part of the day was all the seasoned crew helping him out, and showing him the right techniques to flip and hold the calves. Talk about a good community

Kaley Segboer-Edge, Stewardship Lead at ABP, attended the Siksikaitsitapi Agriculture Conference 2024 at the Red Crow Community College this week. The conference aims to build a bridge between the Blackfoot distant and more recent past with the current Nitsitaapi Agriculture Program and Red Crow College-based program. The goal is to foster the uptake of Indigenous-led agricultural education and encourage Blackfoot community members to engage in agricultural production.
