For four decades City Farmer has encouraged urban dwellers to pull up a patch of lawn and plant some vegetables, herbs and fruit. We presented City Farmer founder, the extraordinary Michael Levenston with a Permaculture Design Deck, a token of our gratitude for the hundreds of thousands of children and adults, locals and travellers from all over the world that him and his team have educated through their extraordinary demonstration site for composting, vermiculture and the many things these can give life to. Been working the lights and really just adding some water and more soil to the potatoes. I reset my sunflowers and corn and added some white yarrow that is just starting to sprout. The basil, eggplant, celery, and dill 😅😔are really starting to take off. I'm kinda sad because I'm pretty sure my dill was mismarked as rosemary.... It's okay I understand that mistakes happen but damn it I don't know what to do with so much dill lmao 🤣😂 and finally I bought some tongs that work amazing but then what do I see on tiktok yesterday? A new soil block setup that is three different sized blockers that make stacking your first blocks that you start seeds in and allow you to stack the blocks that the seeds start in into a bigger size and then one more size. What Is Compost: As we investigate further in what compost is and how it is broken down the children started a seven week scientific study to observe, hypothesis, experiment, and collect data…to conclude what organic and inorganic waste is and how it decomposes over time. The children were given 6 items…an apple core, leaf, bread, plastic bottle cap, aluminum foil, and paper. Each was placed in a jar with living soil from our forest and the children will observe and record weekly changes within each jar. Our hopes through this study is that they become familiar with vocabulary such as decomposer, microorganism, organic/inorganic waste, compost, ect. As well as to understand deeply what is needed for decomposition to occur. To see the amazing relationship within our ecosystem, as well as the overall impact we have on our Earth to divert organic waste from the landfills. I’m excited to volunteer with @saveourcompost & @cfzw_design to co-facilitate these free teaching-ins. 3 online and in-person + 1 online only event. ・・・ A LOT happened last month for NYC’s community composting programs. 100% of city funding was eliminated. While some orgs received private funding to continue scaled down operations, the impacts are far reaching: many food scrap drop-offs (FSDOs) and most composting sites are closed, the master composter training program is defunded, and much more. NYC's save compost rally 🗽𓆑 Earlier this month on December 6th, city compost workers, enthusiasts, and environmentalists gathered outside of New York City’s city hall to protest budget cuts that would end funding to the city’s community compost programs. The only protest in recent memory to feature a full worm-bin demo, dozens of New Yorkers had come together to show their solidarity with the soil. Chants were led by masked green superhero Queen GreenFeen, a New York native who promotes environmental sustainability through hip hop. Throngs of supporters held homemade signs, and a pair of compost workers near the back of the crowd donned mushroom hats. Though the atmosphere was light-hearted, the reality of what was at stake under a looming December 31 deadline lent a somber tone. New budget cuts would not just bring an end to funding for the NY Compost Project. At the time of the rally under the proposed budget cuts, almost 200 of community composting sites would be shut down and over 100 workers were at risk of losing their jobs. Compost advocates will have you know there is a difference between the outputs of community compost and the city-run compost program. Community-run composting sites generate rich, nutrient-dense soil that is then redistributed to community gardens and parks across the city. City-managed compost, on the other hand, is being transformed into an engineered bioslurry, or EBS, with major system failures that not only advance climate change, but also portend cracks in Mayor Adams’ ambitious mandatory composting plan, which is set to roll out across all five boroughs by 2025. In order to create a more vibrant, sustainable future it's important to first acknowledge the interdependence of our communities, our resources, and our environment. . . .
