🌱 HERITAGE TREE - PRINCESS TREE Philadelphia has been known as the Greene Country Towne since its beginning in 1682. We have over 9,000 acres of parkland, much of which is woodland. Everywhere I go, I find examples of “Heritage” trees. These are trees that have lived to at least 100 years, have a width greater than 2’ at chest height, or have cultural significance. The signature tree in the park next to my house is a Princess Tree or Empress Tree (Paulownia tomentosa). This tree can be highly invasive and should never be planted in your garden. With that said, the older of our two trees was planted sometime around 1907 as part of the original estate on this site. The owner was an accomplished naturalist and planted rare trees from China, this country, as well as many native trees from the Mid-Atlantic region. (PHOTO 1) The Princess Tree’s flowers are prolific and are shaped similar to the foxglove flower. (PHOTO 2) This tree has a signature shape. It’s very chunky and irregular. The main trunk averages 6’ in diameter. Mother’s Day additions! Don’t you love getting dwarf tropical fruit trees instead of roses? 😂 My family took me to @readytogrowgardens to pick the trees! They had amazing selection and great service! Dylan and Sam, thank you! I picked: 1. Avocado, Maria Black, dwarf - with black skin and considered better than Hass. My quick research shows it’s type-B flower or perhaps self-fertile. 2. Guava, Ruby Supreme (pink) - yellow skin with pink flesh. 3. Canistel (eggfuit), Ross Sapote - the weirdest fruit ever (with egg yolk texture but sweet) that I really wanted to grow 😂 4. Longan, Kohala - we love lychees but they sometimes struggle in our area, so settled on this one. #tropicalfruit

I love this happy shade of yellow on this brittle bush (Encelia farinosa)! 🌼🌼🌼 This shrub is a perennial that blooms mainly in winter and spring. Its gray foliage is also beautiful. Brittlebush is a drought-tolerant native plant and would be a great addition to low water use areas. Could your garden use this low water, colorful shrub? 🌼
When I was photographing for our book (link in bio) I visited many of the distinctive summer-dry climate zones of the West Coast. In Portland, many people told me to be sure to visit the tiny, no irrigation garden of Greg Sheppard @gregscottshep co-owner of Xera Nursery @xeraplants. Wow! How he managed to cram so many plants in a small space still astounds me as I review this file today, exactly 6 years later. This complex tapestry of shapes, colors, and foliage textures is exactly what we hope to encourage with The Summer-Dry Project. Yes, Greg is a master and few gardeners understand plants and their potential pairings in a garden and how to maintain them without irrigation, nor would many off us dare try; but such is the inspiration. This composition is centered around Hebe 'Karo Golden Esk, from New Zealand (Royal Hort. The Cool Garden I designed for @rhsrosemoor rhs was created to address precisely this problem, with Rosemoor having the highest rainfall of all the RHS gardens. As an outdoor public green space, you can visit, walk round it and see how it works for yourself. “With gardens distributed across England, the RHS is well-placed to see how climate change is impacting different parts of the country, with the west getting wetter and the east becoming drier. At RHS Rosemoor in Devon, the garden designer Jo Thompson has created the Cool Garden, so called because of its calming colour palette, to show how a garden can deal with heavy rain and flash flooding. Sedum ternatum, commonly known as wild stonecrop or three-leaved stonecrop, is a beautiful and versatile native succulent. This plant thrives in partial shade to full shade, is low maintenance, and the flowers in the spring attract bees and butterflies. Use this plant as ground cover in shaded area, under trees, along pathways, rock gardens, green roofs, and containers! So many uses! Overall, Sedum ternatum is a lovely addition to any garden, providing year-round interest with its charming foliage and delicate blooms.
We often get questions about retaining mature trees. There are always exceptions, but our general advice, is to keep mature trees. They’re not easily replaced and root systems and canopy cover have so much value, including: 🌱 Reducing temperatures 🌱 Improving air quality 🌱 Water retention 🌱 Flood prevention 🌱 Erosion control 🌱 Habitat There’s also a demonstratable link between the presence of canopy cover and mental health. One study found that older adults with exposure to 30% or more tree canopy were less likely to experience psychological distress (Astell-Burt & Feng, 2019). Here we are with some of the mature trees we inherited. While we wouldn't have chosen these trees ourselves, we incorporated them into the design of our front garden as we're grateful for the benefits they bring. A beautifully warm and sunny first day at the @malvernshows RHS Malvern Spring Festival. It was great to welcome back our amazing landscaping contractor @pickwell.paving to see the garden now that it has been planted and dressed, and to be visited by the always brilliant @paul_landscapeplus and his @landscapeplus_uk colleague Tori. The sunshine also presented an opportunity to capture some of the key sustainable features in our award winning Concrete 2.0 show garden. First off we have our water features which have been designed to harvest rainwater from the garden studio’s roof and solar panels, carrying it to our recycled vintage steel agricultural troughs via elevated water channels fabricated from reclaimed steel angle iron. Our boundary screen is made with end-of-life scaffold boards, set at an angle and painted black to form an attractive and contemporary backdrop for the planting. Our bespoke paving features 32 individual pieces of sustainable cement-free concrete, bordered by drainage channels of recycled aggregates (a mix of crushed bricks, tiles, glass and concrete) . Produced in collaboration with the wonderful team at @kelhamislandconcrete in Sheffield, the paving features reinforcing fibres made from reclaimed steel threads which have been recovered from old car tyres. Setting Up & Starting Your Hotbin (100l/200l models) Hotbins are flying out these days! #CompostAwarenessWeek Here is a quick guide on setting up your Hotbin. Hope it's helpful! The Hotbin arrives ready assembled but you'll need to think about the best spot for it. ♻️ The Hotbin charcoal filter in the lid minimises any composting odours so you can situate the Hotbin near to your house for convenience. Ideally, you'll be adding waste every 2-3 days once the Hotbin is up and running! ♻️ The Hotbin can be located outside on a firm level surface. Sun or shade! ♻️ Attach the cam straps provided. ♻️ Open the valve by 2mm. Leave open and keep clear to allow air to circulate. ♻️ Ensure the area in front of the aeration base plate is kept clear. ♻️ Install fertiliser unit (included). Ensure blue cap is finger tight but try not to over tighten. ♻️ Start adding your base layer. Starting the Hotbin - Building the base layer The base layer is the volume of waste required to start the hot composting process. This volume is indicated by the top of the hatch. It can be added in one go or bit by bit, depending on how much waste you have available. ♻️ Add a thin scattering of twigs into the empty bin. ♻️ Add chopped, easy to digest waste with some bulking agent (supplied) & shredded paper. Do not add all of the bulking agent supplied! ♻️ Keep adding waste. Once the base layer is achieved, the temperature should increase within a week. ♻️ Carry on composting! ⚠️ Always check the internal temperature before adding cooked food waste, meat, fish, leftovers, diseased plant material & weeds. Some will require temperature of 40-60+ degrees to break down. Use the thermometer supplied, not the thermometer on the top of the bin. Keep the user guide to hand for more information. Found a helper on my feverfew! Then I found out why the ladybug was there; a gazillion aphids! Looking even more closely, I found lacewings and another ladybug. I'll check back later, maybe there will be some ladybug eggs! This is why I hardly ever spray anything, even with organic sprays like neem, etc (which are not very discriminate). The feverfews are strong and healthy, and in order for the helper insects to come to your garden, they need something to eat! Had I reached for an organic spray, I could have hurt my helpers. My recommendation is to either leave it be, try to wash the aphids off with a burst of water, and/or try to figure out why the aphids are after my plant. Some plants are "trap" plants -no matter what the aphids go after them and prefer them. Like kale, roses, or lupine, hah! Often, it's because the plant is weak, it's in the wrong conditions (or harsh conditions), it's not getting the nutrients or water it needs, it's diseased, or it's just a nice tender youngster. Often, the healthier and happier your plants, the more they can just deal with the damage. Just like if you get run down and don't take care of yourself, you are more susceptible to illness, aphids can sense when plants are stressed and go after them first. Happy to talk more about it !
