We’ve been very behind on everything, trying to sort out inefficiencies, getting summer setups for animals ready, getting the garden going, and an endless list of other tasks. All the while realizing our mistakes and flaws in our systems and setups from starting out this past year and making many more mistakes along the way but even through all this we have been able to set a new record for ourselves! We planted 11 strawberry plants last spring and from runners from those original plants we potted up at least 11 more in the fall. A few of those potted up plants got planted in the polytunnel as a trial and as a result we were able to pick our first strawberry on May 7, which is coincidentally the last frost date for our growing zone! This is also over a month earlier than our first harvest last year. Hoe het gaat? 'The struggle is real' zullen we maar zeggen. Eventjes had ik hoop toen de aaltjes leken te werken, maar na een paar natte dagen waren de slakken vrolijk en hongerig terug. Gelukkig niet met zoveel als in het begin. Ik ga 2 keer per dag op jacht en doe ze nu netjes in een bakje waarna ik ze een functie elders geef, om het maar even politiek correct te houden. Ik heb namelijk al een paar keer gehoord dat ze weer terug naar huis kruipen als je ze over de schutting (in de berm, niet bij de buren 😅) gooit. Gooseberry sawfly larvae are on the march, 3 weeks earlier than we had last year. There are a number of sawfly species that impact gooseberries, red and white currants. Not sure which this is. Swift removal stops them fully defoliating the plant and consequently impacting the fruit development and yield for that year. The plants will survive and come back in subsequent years. Treat by squashing/squishing or applying the specific nematode. With the weather warming up so quickly this year the plants have been coming out of dormancy. However our commercial side still have customers wanting to pot on lots of our bare root strawberries so they have gone into cold store until they are ready for them. These have been bunched into 10’s and put into a plastic bag in crates to ensure the moisture is kept in the plants. A Vanishing Landscape. The Treasure Valley of Idaho is where five major river systems converge on the Snake River: the Payette , Boise, Owyhee, Malheur and the Weiser Rivers all empty into the Snake in one of the most fertile agricultural areas in the Northwest. A short few decades ago, there were hundreds of soft fruit orchards, literally thousands of acres of apple, peach, cherry, pear and plum orchards clustered from the Oregon border to the capital city of Boise. Today there are but a handful of scattered orchards left, the others having been replaced by faster producing and more profitable row crops like onions, potatoes, corn and sugar beets. Suddenly it’s April and there’s so much going on! Most of the berry bushes and fruit trees are coming full into flowering and the first direct sown seeds are finally germinating 🥳 Obviously we’ve been impatient and propagated peas indoors. Did yours go leggy too? If you propagate indoors, the trick is to harden the young plants off before transplanting them outdoors. Hardening off is done by putting them outdoors during the daytime or by using (led) lights, adjusting them for changing daylight and by blowing air on your plants by putting a fan, an air blower on them. Just a gentle setting will encourage the plants to build sturdier stems instead of getting leggy and fragile, like our peas here did. So, we’ll direct sow in between and that way at least some of our peas and sugar snaps will make it 😏 #propagation #peas #organicgardening #growyourown #suddenlyspring #berries #softfruit
