I’ve gotten some questions regarding my seed starting trays so I figured I’d share some details. I’ve got 9 of these trays that slide perfectly onto 9 shelves in my seed starting room. Their construction is extremely simple, being made from scrap offcuts of dimensional lumber and OSB. I used some brad nails and a few screws to bring it all together and they’re really quite robust. I knew these would be subject to dirt and water and that I would be risking mold if I didn’t line the trays with something. I found some aluminum drip trays for grilling (the brand is called Trager) that were roughly 20x15”. These were thin enough that they could easily be folded, creased, and cut with normal scissors. I made a template from the included sheet of paper and traced that template onto each of the drip trays. Since I wanted the material to cover the walls of the trays, I folded each of them in a fashion that allowed the trays to cover the bottom 1/2” of the walls of my seed trays. Attaching them was as easy as using a handheld staple gun. The finished seed trays are roughly 16x18” and fit nine 5” pots each. What I really like about them is how easily the aluminum surface cleans up and how it reflects light to the underside of my plant’s leaves. I could have easily used the my standard 20x10” nursery trays but these tend to be flimsy with weight in them and the plastic has proven to break easily. The wooden trays I’ve made are incredibly sturdy, which I find to be a massive plus when moving trays around to water plants or when transporting outside to harden off. We don’t always have to buy cheap garbage online or from big box stores. With the right materials and a little bit of time, these can be made for less and last much longer. Every year there seems to be a degree of loss when you’re growing from seed. Some years germination rates aren’t that great. Other times you cull a handful of seedlings that are a bit leggy. Sometimes you have issues you just can’t troubleshoot. This year, the majority of my tomatoes did not make it to the hardening off stage. For whatever reason, I was able to grow them from seed flawlessly last year but had nearly a total loss this time around. It’s okay to feel frustration and disappointment when these things happen but then it’s time to get back to work. I’ve washed my hands of the problem plants and have focused my efforts on new seeds and the remaining healthy plants. I may not be able to grow everything I planned to grow this year, but my garden will prosper one way or another- even if it means buying plants from a local greenhouse. A hard lesson, but one best learned quickly, is that things seldom go to plan. The ability to appreciate your loss, learn from it, and find a constructive way to move on is one of the most important things we can teach ourselves about gardening. I started four varieties of tomatoes from seed six weeks ago. This is the reward for the time, money, and effort I’ve invested in seed starting this year- devastation. We had no problems whatsoever starting tomatoes last year. They grew big, fast, and without incident. Right around this time we were probably hardening them off and getting ready to transplant them. This year, instead, we’re throwing them all in the fire pit. I have no idea what went wrong. Admittedly, I did transplant the sprouts into the wrong media but quickly repotted them in larger pots with the proper soil mix when I noticed issues occurring. I also transplanted some of them into pots earlier than I probably should have. The only other thing I can think of is that we have been leaving the heat off in the house whenever possible and maybe the seed starting room has been getting too cold at night. The tomatoes have had just about every issue imaginable. I water them, the leaves droop or even blister. I decrease water, the leaves curl up and become crunchy within a day. Stunted growth, yellowing or spotted leaves- we’ve seen it all. Today I had to make the difficult decision to cut the stalks and admit defeat. I had a very specific plan for this year’s garden that will no longer come to fruition and if I’m honest, it’s left me wondering if I even want to invest any more this year. It’s too late to start new tomato seeds and I really don’t want to purchase plants from somewhere else. It really defeats the purpose to me. A third of the space in my garden was to be dedicated to growing tomatoes. Haven't updated the allotment progress for a while...its been a bit stop/start! Had a boost as my lovely family came to help for my birthday present a few weeks ago. I have also been given a greenhouse which I'm so pleased with and have actually managed to sort it pretty much by myself!!!! I cannot believe I now have a greenhouse! What a lovely day. A sunny booking visit with a new client which involved tea, feline fusses, birth chit chat and me fumbling around trying to work out my new digital BP monitor (my manual sphyg squeezed its final arm last week - RIP) 🥴 The booking visit normally takes place after we've had a phone/video call or two and had a few messages and emails to confirm our agreement together ♥️ It's *such* an exciting meeting and can easily last 2-3 hours. We have a list of things to try and cover, but overall it's very relaxed and it's about getting to know one another (and of course taking a BP & a wee🤭). It's not just an exchange of information and ticking boxes - it is unrushed and organic. It's the start of something beautiful. The fact that my clients and I have very open communication routes and have a wonderfully enhanced schedule of appointments means that there is no pressure to offload or collect huge amounts of generalised information in a short space of time. Conversations are natural, information is individualised and clients are well and truly *heard*.
