Since the winter here in west London has been mild, with only a few solid freezes, everything is starting to wake up on the food forest plot, the pluots, Asian Plums and Cornelian Cherry have already started opening their beautiful blooms, and the Apricots, Nectarines, Peaches and Cherrycot are just about to open their buds too. The paths were recently resurfaced with fresh woodchips which helps redefine the beds and freshen things up ready for the growing year ahead. I will be adding lots more perennial vegetables this year to add to the existing collection. I will still be planting a few annual crops, whilst waiting for the newer perennials to establish using every inch of ground space filling it with beneficial plants for the system, rather than leave space for weeds to grow. So today I harvested the first of the plums with many more to go. It turned out that the Opal and the Asian Beauty Plums were the first to ripen, I sampled a few yesterday and OMG they taste so fine. One of the fellow plot holders who actually isn't keen on plums is now addicted to my plums😊🤣 It's amazing how different each variety tastes. As I lost a fair few earlier in the year due to Plum Pocket I didn't thin out the remaining fruit which means that although I have lots of plums, they are not as large as they could have been but I'm still very happy with them as they taste fantastic sweet and juicy 😋 the Opal Plum is what is known as a free stone variety where the flesh separates from the stone easily, the Asian Beauty Plum is the opposite and clings to the stone so you eat around it it's also so juicy that it runs down your hands dripping all over my top 🙈 I can highly recommend growing your own plums as there is a wonderful selection out there that you won't be able to buy in your local supermarket. Yet another batch of fresh cherries from the food forest plot, this is my Stella Cherry and one of my favourites, these were later to fruit than some of my others, but they are also bigger and more juicy than the others, so it's well worth the wait. The Grapes are coming on nicely, I have an 8 mtr long double row of Grapevine which is currently holding probably 200 potential bunches, they are delicious and although I don't usually get around to thinning out the bunches so the grapes are not usually huge but they are juicy. Maybe I will try thinning some out to see the difference. I also don't usually water these vines as they are mature and well mulched. Although I have my Grapevines growing on a low trellis in my Food Forests for ease of harvest, it is possible to grow various fruiting vines up living structures such as willow or mature fruit trees, although it can add some difficulties when it comes to harvesting if they get to tall 🙈 It's great to use vertical growing spaces, whether that be on canes, trellises or on other upright strong plants the same way you do in the 3 sisters combination. Many squash, both winter and summer varieties, (not the really big Pumpkins 🙈) Melons, Kiwi, Passionfruit, Beans, Mashua, Achocha and many others are great for vertical growing either with natural living trellises or actual framework. So today was Jam making whilst the fruit is good, Raspberry Jam and then a mixed fruit Jam all fruits were from my Permaculture Food Forest. Fruit is coming in thick n fast and will be harvesting Currants, Gooseberries, Apricots and Fourberries along with more Strawberries, Framberries, Cherries. Over the coming weeks By time that's all harvested there will still be Apples, Plums and Apricots So I will be utilising them as they are ready be it fresh or preparing them for storage so they can be used at a later date. Remember although you may get a sudden influx of fruits, you are not able to harvest them all year, so preparing them by canning, dehydrating and freezing, preserving them for when you want a taste of summer in the middle of winter 🤗 So don't let your fruits, vegetables and herbs go to waste. Also remember that no one knows what is around the corner, so having your own food stores as backup is always wise. If you really do have too much then during the financially difficult times we are experiencing around the world, I am sure there are some local families or charities that would appreciate some wonderful fresh produce. Todays harvest was just over 1kg of Raspberries and 1kg of Framberries Fresh from the Food Forest with lots more to come. This fantastic nitrogen fixer is Elaeagnus Multiflora variety Cherrific and as you can see the fruits are ripening, I love snacking on these fresh from the bush. It seems to be getting more and more prolific each year and I'm not complaining, they have a single seed which you can munch through or just spit out. The Elderberry (Sambucus) bushes are in flower in the food forest plot and are looking spectacular, the flowers make a beautiful cordial as do the berries along with many other recipes both culinary and medicinal. They are full of antioxidants and vitamins. Please note that the berries should not be eaten raw but are delicious once cooked. 😋💜 flowers are also edible both raw and cooked. Remember when trying something for the first time have just a small amount to start with as people can have allergic reactions to anything. I have 3 Elderberry bushes, 2 of which I grew from cuttings and a variegated variety that I purchased. Elderberry bushes are extremely hardy and easy to grow, you will get some fruit production from a single plant but you will get much better fruit set if you have 2 or more varieties, the pollinators love the flowers and can be grown in full sun to semi shade.
