So yesterday I popped into @lidlgb for a few bits of shopping and spotted some lovely speciality Italian Lemons at 49p each, but the thing that actually attracted me to them was the fact that many had some sturdy healthy looking leafy stems attached to to beautiful fruits.🍋🍋🍋 So the gardener in me just automatically goes into propagation mode to see if I can get them to root. Only time will tell.🤞🙃🌱 I have them in a 50/50 mix of vermiculite and perlite and used some natural rooting powder, I have made sure that 2 leaf nodes were buried with each cutting and that the 1-2 leaves on each stem has been cut back to help prevent transpiration, then placed a zip lock bag over the top to create a humidity dome, then placed the pot onto my heated propagator, I will keep an eye on them and let you know if any produce roots. Just thought I would pop on Instagram today with some of my wonderful foxes to wish everyone a beautiful festive season. In this picture is "Baby" who is the eldest of the my wonderful fox family and still the boss at nearly 6 years old, eating alongside her is fudge, one of the cubs from this year who follows me around and makes me smile with the cheeky antics and patiently waits for me. The others didn't sit still long enough to get a decent picture but there are 6 foxes in the family in total. Puppa, Baby, Sky, Fudge, Amber and Tinks. So my day was spent on the allotment with them, I also managed to plant out some of my bulbs at long last but still have lots to go in, I will get around to it in the coming days if the weather holds, thankfully the mild, albeit wet start to winter is helping me slowly catch up with my to do list. SUPER PASTINAAK • We oogsten deze grote pastinaak vanmorgen in onze eigen moestuin. Wat een mooi exemplaar van maar liefst 1299 gram en ruim 50 cm lang. Perfect voor de soep vanavond. En we merken goed dat we al dik 3 jaar met permacultuur en no-dig methode werken. De grond die dieper ligt begint mooi los te worden, want deze pastinaak is incl. haar dunste wortelpunt in één geheel uit de grond gekomen. Dat wil zeggen dat de aarde in de diepte mooie losse aarde is geworden door alle wortels en het bodemleven die hiervoor hard gewerkt hebben de afgelopen jaren. I'm really proud of how my compost bin is doing this year. Last year we built two compost bays with recycled pallets, but after visiting Charles Dowding at Homeacres this time last year, we realised that we had so much wasted space by not breaking the backs off of the pallets, plus weeds and bramble were starting to grow between the gaps. So last winters task was to break the pallets down and build them as a single wall instead and i managed to save so much space that i had enough room to plant an apple tree 🤣 As all my other compost bins haven't done well, I'm trying to be really mindful of what i put in here this year so it's slow progress. I've given myself until this time next year and if it's still not working for me I'm just going to rip them out and use the space for growing something else instead i think. I've been really enjoying reading The Compost Coach by @compostable.kate which i pre-ordered. It's such a good book if you're wanting to get into composting and it has so many pictures too which i love as I'm such a visual learner. BRAMENJAM • We oogste vrijdagavond 3 kilo bramen en vandaag nog eens ruim 1 kilo. Zaterdag ging de eerste 2 kilo in de pan om, voor mij, voor de aller eerste keer jam te maken. Dat was leuk om te doen en eenvoudiger dan ik dacht. Om suikervrij te kunnen werken heb ik Agar Agar toegevoegd i.p.v. suiker. We gaan binnenkort eens proeven hoe alles smaakt. Van 4 kilo bramen heb ik 13 potjes kunnen vullen en een klein beetje over voor een 14de. 1 potje heeft geen "plop" gemaakt, dus die gaat als eerste open straks. This is today's harvest! Gathered while doing some hard-core weeding. I hadn't been able to go up there for a couple of weeks and it had become a forest of native plants. Its meant that I've had to do some thinking and redesigning of the site. Maintenance is a big deal and my body has limitations. But.... look at my harvest. The weeds haven't stopped me from getting a crop. There's 5kg of potatoes there. There were loads of different bugs, bees and butterflies. A sparrow was eating amongst the weeds. After spotting plum pocket earlier in the year I was concerned that I may not have any plums to harvest this year, however after removing the affected fruit the rest have all been fine thankfully. Now the plums are starting to ripen, so it will be a case of checking on them daily so that the birds don't get them before me. the 4 varieties shown here are Stanley which are already dark but still solid so I think they still have some swelling to do before they are ready, the pictures also show my Opal, Victoria and Asian Beauty Plums, I do have several other varieties but they are either new to the collection or still young, so next year hopefully a few of them will start to produce. The Victoria Plum this year will be the latest to ripen judging by how green they are at the moment. Today I was busy planting out and watering but thought I would grab some of the ripe fruits, still plenty more to go and will pick as it becomes ripe.todays harvest was some Early Moorpark Apricots, Gooseberries and the first of the Blueberries. You can't beat home grown fruits picked at their peak. Nuts oh Hazel Nuts 🤗 As well as fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers no Permaculture system is complete without some nuts. This Red Filbert (Hazel nut) I have grown from a seedling, I was not expecting it to produce any nuts for another year or 2 I must have missed the catkins earlier in the year so this was a pleasant surprise for sure. I have 3 of the regular green varieties too, 1 that I planted 2 years ago and the other 2 were only planted this year. I have also started some sweet Chestnuts from nuts I purchased from Lidl around Christmas, there are around 10 that are growing, So if you are patient you can start your own nut trees, it's good to use the winter to your advantage and put some in pots outside, they will show signs of life in spring. A couple of the more unusual flowers on my food forest plots at the moment. The first is from my Feijoa (Pineapple Guava) the petals of the flowers are edible and sweet and will not affect the fruiting, the fruits have an unusual flavour, which last year I turned into delicious Jam. Summer harvests are really starting now. These currants are destined for the freezer and will be turned into wine later in the season when we have more time. It's been over a month since we've bough potatoes, have enjoyed snacking on peas (definitely growing more next season) and the first of the courgettes and carrots aren't far off. Yet another batch of fresh cherries from the food forest plot, this is my Stella Cherry and one of my favourites, these were later to fruit than some of my others, but they are also bigger and more juicy than the others, so it's well worth the wait. The Tromboncino squash have started fruiting already, these are from my home saved seeds. I love how productive they are, these are being grown on trellises so that I end up with long straight-ish winter squash, although you can harvest them and use like courgettes (summer squash) with a firmer texture. Leaves of squash plants are also edible, great steamed and used as wraps for you to fill so they are very giving plants. I am so pleased with how the hexagon bed is coming along in the allotment, it is only 4 weeks old, This is my bee bed. Yesterday was hard work, but I managed to strim the walkways on the plot leaving a little clover patch for the bees. I have also left the back of the plot completely wild in the hope I can encourage more wildlife into the plot. I was quite frustrated to see monty Dons' article regarding rewinding yesterday. Last week was national insect week. It is so important to keep biodiversity in gardens and allotments. The amount of insects and bees at the plot Yesterday compared to my neighbours plot, which is overly manicured, was incredible. This is Galega officinalis otherwise known as Goat's Rue along with several other names, it's a stunning perennial plant. As well as being a hardy (-20°c) herbaceous nitrogen fixing shrub that works well in a perennial guild for passive fertility and mulch it's also a fantastic pollinator plant, the Bee's love it 🐝💚. It graces the garden with prolonged spectacular lilac or white blooms often called French Lilac 💜 There are many potential medicinal uses but please check research before using. These start of small to medium in their first year but in years 2-3 expect a plant 3ft wide and 5-6ft tall when in flower. They can be started from seed or division and die back to the ground in winter. This is a single plant in the picture so as you can see they are substantial 🤗 you can also chop n drop one mature and it will keep coming back. Todays harvest was just over 1kg of Raspberries and 1kg of Framberries Fresh from the Food Forest with lots more to come. The Raspberries are ripening fast which is great as I love them 😋 There are many colours, flavours as well as Summer/Autumn varieties available and will grow in full sun/partial shade, I use them underneath my fruit trees especially the dwarf thornless varieties. Give them a good mulch and make sure they don't dry out and you will be rewarded with abundant harvests year after year. Raspberry leaf is also very useful for making a very healthy tea. This fantastic nitrogen fixer is Elaeagnus Multiflora variety Cherrific and as you can see the fruits are ripening, I love snacking on these fresh from the bush. It seems to be getting more and more prolific each year and I'm not complaining, they have a single seed which you can munch through or just spit out. My cherry trees are ripening their fruits in the food forest plots and I can't wait 🤗🍒 Now It's getting the timing right, not just so they are at their peak, but ripe enough to pic for good flavour but before the birds beat you to it. I don't use any netting etc, so I don't always get as many as I might by netting but I have seen too many injured birds due to netting. Schisandra chinensis For those of you that saw my post a month or so ago where my Schisandra vines were flowering for the first time ever, not knowing if I had both male and female plants as both are required for fruit production. To my delight as you can see I have fruits. So I harvested the rest of the Charlotte potatoes and discovered a few random purple potatoes that always seem to come up even when you thought you had harvested all of them previously lol The Charlotte's were planted un chitted in mid March and were never watered apart from the initial watering the day they were planted. I will definitely do this again so that I can get the double harvest from the same space, this harvest was from planting 18 seed potatoes with no work. Just around the edges of the patch, so I could have filled the whole area and got a bigger harvest but as it was just a trial I didn't want to go too mad with it. Allotment overwhelm is hitting me hard at the moment, finding time between my garden, full-time job, and second job is so difficult. Iv got so many plans that I just don't have the time to execute them, which is making me worry. I am struggling to keep on top of the weed situation, prepare all of the beds, and get plants in the ground, I haven't sowen anything direct yet like carrots or salad veg. I need to put up my vertical supports and archways and make 2 more hexagon beds. Plant my flowerbeds, I desperately need some wood chip to make the paths pretty and stop it looking so unkempt. The list is never-ending. I'm well aware that it is full of what others call weeds, but the wildlife is absolutely loving the allotment, and i am so proud of how far iv came despite feeling so overwhelmed. It can be so difficult sometimes to trust the process, and not focus on everyone elses progress, I made it my mission to make this little space wildlife friendly, and it is working. Hopefully, I can find time this week to get my peas, squash, shallots, beets, and sweetpeas in the ground. I also feel like I'm already running out of space. Figs are one of my favourite fruits, So I'm really looking forward to tasting the fresh Figs from my in ground, outdoor Ice Crystal Fig tree. This will be the first time the figs on this tree will fully ripen which will make them extra special 🤗 This variety gets its name from the deep cut leaves like snow flakes and is often grown as an ornamental because of its amazing leaves that turn golden in the autumn before falling off. The fruits that are 3/4 way to being ripe are whats known as Breba crop, this just means they are growing on last years growth, whereas figs that form on this years growth are classed as main crop figs. Although this tree is over 8ft tall and can get much much bigger, you can grow Fig trees and keep them 3ft tall or less and still be harvesting figs every year. figs are also happy to be grown in pots, so if you have always wanted a Fig tree but are limited on space, there are plenty of options for you. 🌍💚For my fellow vegans out there that have been told that figs are not vegan due to a Fig wasp pollinating them and then being trapped inside where it will die. This is not the case with the fig varieties grown in the UK. The winters in the UK and most of Northern Europe are too cold for fig wasps to survive so only parthenocarpic varieties of figs can be grown in the UK. So ours are all vegan friendly as we do not even have the Fig wasp over here that many varieties of figs in hotter climates require. Today my first peony opened on the plot and also my first dahlia. The flower bed is full to bursting lots of geums have spread through it and I’ve a few wild flowers like buttercup, willowherb and hedge woundwort I let flower for the bees and butterfly’s. My lupins are still going strong and the alliums. I planted out my first tray of sweetcorn today. I had potted them on into toilet roll holders as a trial. The other tray I’ve grown I put into individual pots. I lost a few by this method but on the whole they did well. I put the holders into a tray and filled compost around them which kept them drying out too much and the roots were able to spread into the tray. They all had lovely long roots. We haven’t had rain for a few weeks now so I watered the hole first, the compost around them and I put extra on top as a mulch to maintain moisture. I’ve planted a pumpkin and squash with them as they make great companion plants. The pumpkin will spread and maintain the ground moisture, the corn should grow above it. I’ve a couple of sunflowers and cosmos in the bed too. I’ll also be direct sowing some cornflowers tomorrow. We need to dig the final space on the plot for my 2nd tray of sweetcorn and more squash and pumpkins to go in. Sweetcorn has to be my favourite crop to grow when it does well it’s delicious and so much better than anything you buy. Unfortunately last year we had a bad year it was too hot and dry and what we had the rodents or pigeons mostly ate. Today I dug up a test patch of Charlotte potatoes outside in my pumpkin patch, I put them in the ground mid March un chitted as an experiment, to see if I could get a harvest from that area prior to me planting out my pumpkins in around a week or so. It was indeed well worth doing, there are still lots more 🥔🥔🥔 to harvest yet from this patch. I also planted a second batch of Charlotte potatoes in one of my raised bed around 2 weeks ago, I might also start another lot around the end of July for a steady supply of new potatoes. The Strawberries are now starting to ripen, I picked the first few today, they are delicious sweet and full of flavour unlike the ones you buy in the supermarket. The Honeyberries are ripening fast, a few more days for the best flavour I think. Honeyberry, Haskap (Lonicera caerulea) are non-invasive relatives of the honeysuckle. Honeyberries are a nutritious edible fruit with a unique, sweet-tart flavor. Honeyberry plants are exceptionally cold-hardy (-40°c) and grow well in a range of soil types, unlike Blueberries which Ideally need Ericaceous acidic compost. Much to my two plot neighbours' frustration, my plot is on the wild side. I'm sure they look over the fence in discuct and disbelief. They are both very traditional allotment holders. One side uses pestersides, and the other has absolutely everything caged or netted. I absolutely love the fact that the paths are full of buttercup and clover. Although creaping buttercup is a nightmare to control, it's stunning in flower. My goal this time last year when i got the plot was to let the allotment be a little wild. My first annual poppies opened today they are gorgeous! I separated my antirrhanium seedlings it’s surprising how many there was in a few cells so I’ve now got a tray full and several pots too. We finished our cauliflower bed today and netted them from pigeons. Once they are grown we remove the netting so the birds can get to the slugs. These cauliflower are a mix of coloured ones and romanesco. I’ve not had much luck with cauliflower in the past. The soil is good on this part of the plot and I added lots of compost and watered thoroughly so 🤞We also finished digging the next bed up from them and I planted out my first squash this variety is a patisson gagat. I planted some cosmos on the border edge and a couple of sunflowers. The sweetcorn will then be added in another week or so they make good companions with the squash and flowers. Our first rose has opened she is called Queen Elizabeth. Also have some more of the Dutch Iris opening they are gorgeous and the bees love them too. I have a few white alliums mixed in the beds and another foxglove has opened with several flower stems. My Kiwi-berry is in bud and is looking as though it will be a good year for the delicious fruit. The fruit of 'Issai' kiwi vine is a cousin of the familiar grocery store kiwis. The berries have the same sweet-and-citrus taste, maybe a little sweeter. But they're bite-sized and smooth skinned so you can pop them in your mouth like grapes. They are ready for harvesting in late summer to early autumn. Spotted this cute mullein moth on my Verbascum flowers today. The Verbascums are lovely cottage garden flowers I’ve a few clumps of different colours and they have deep taproots so do well in dry conditions. They’ve grown loads since I planted them last year with lots more flower stems. This little caterpillar is welcome the Verbascum is tough and will take a bit of munching. Also in the plot today was another beautiful iris I love to see how many different colour combinations they have. I have another pink lupin in flower and lots of alliums are opening. It’s a lovely time of year every time we visit there’s something new to see. We had a squirrel today feeding off the fat balls and over the last week we’ve also seen a great spotted woodpecker and a jay. This year I seem to have a handful of conjoined apples on one of my fruit trees, this is the first time it has happened on this tree, it is currently laden with fruit, so much so that I will need to thin out a fair amount, its always productive but this year its looking super healthy and impressive. My Salsify that were sown last year around this time are now flowering, they open in the sun and close early evening. Little-known but easy to grow, salsify produces long, slender, delicately oyster-flavoured roots. These are rarely available to buy, so to enjoy this unusual vegetable, sow outdoors in spring, in the ground or in deep containers, for harvests throughout the winter.Salsify roots are ready to harvest from late September. They can be left in the ground and dug up whenever required, through winter and into early spring. Frost helps to sweeten the flavour, in a similar way to parsnips. Lift the long slender roots very carefully, as they snap easily and bleed if cut. Ease them out with a fork rather than pulling them up From autumn onwards, protect the top from frost with a layer of straw or fleece In very cold locations or where the soil is prone to waterlogging, lift and store the roots in sand or sawdust and keep in a cool, frost-free garage or cellar. Salsify roots have a tough, inedible skin. Removing it can be tricky, as uncooked roots produce a sticky latex. So it’s best to cook the roots first, then peel them. To enjoy the delicate oyster-like flavour, simply steam the roots, peel them, then serve with butter as a side dish. Like other winter root crops, they can also be mashed, roasted or sautéed, and added to many other hearty dishes, such as soups and stews. If you leave some of the roots unharvested, salsify will re-sprout from the base in spring. These young shoots can be blanched to provide an additional crop: Spring leaves can also be cut when 15cm (6in) tall, without blanching, but are not as tender. They can be used like spring greens. If left to grow, salsify will flower in its second Spring/summer – the pink-purple petals are edible and add a bright splash of colour to summer salads. The flower buds can also be steamed or sautéed. I love the architectural magnificent beauty of Cardoons and Artichokes with their silvery green foliage as well as their geometric bracts which when open reveal the purple flower section that the bee's go crazy for. Such a statement plant for both the ornamental and edible gardens. These are both perennial edibles, the Cardoon you eat the thick mid rib of the younger leaves, whereas you eat the Globe of the unopened flower, not the choke the fuzzy bit inside which is actually the developing flower. The bracts and heart are the edible parts once cooked. Veg update! The garlic and onions under the trees are now growing strong. I didn’t have high hopes as it can get very dry on this side of the plot but they are now coming along nicely. We’ve not watered them at all as we’ve had plenty of rain until now but we plan to give them a nettle liquid feed boost this week. Also growing with them are the parsnips i scattered seeds randomly throughout the beds last autumn again not expecting much and I love their flowers so thought this would be a good spot. Quite a few are growing in the flower beds too. We harvested 3 more globe artichokes and ate them cooked with garlic and butter and some onion scapes for tonight’s meal. Another visit to the plot after work. Lots of red and pink flowers are opening. We have antirrhinums - I love snapdragoms and watching the bees push them open is fascinating. Sweet Williams and salvia and a dark pink lupin all my other lupins are purple so it’s a lovely change. The guelder rose is also in flower and my white stock is full of lovely white flowers with red geums and iris peeping through.
