One of my favourite perennials in the veg garden… Egyptian Walking Onions. They send up a cluster of bulbs where a flower head would normally be and the weight of the bulbs flops them over allowing them to “walk” All of the plant is edible, but the onions themselves are tiny so I prefer to eat the stems as a very easy spring onion substitute. I think they look super cool too 💚 #perennialvegetables #allotmentuk #vegpatch

What we’re harvesting in Mid-May. Perennials: asparagus, scorzonera leaves, scallion flower stalks, patience dock, perennial leek greens, chives, garlic chives, cultivated dandelion, sylvetta arugula. Overwintered annuals: kale stems, florets and leaves, winter field pea vines. Self-seeded: mache mostly gone to seed but some still harvestable, root chervil seedlings. Turns out year 1 root chervil seedlings are mild and make a good salad green. Year 2 greens have a stronger flavor.

A new video on my youtube channel, the wonderfully exclusive SNOW ONION from the mountains of China and the Himalaya https://youtu.be/5mOcQ4aUQVI We're back in the Onion Garden Chicago at the Ringve Botanical Garden in Trondheim, Norway on 10th May and the first Allium is in flower. It's Allium humile, known as the snow onion (snøløk) and one of my favourites and one of the world's most exclusive foods, known from the ethnobotanical literature to be wild collected both in Kashmir, where it has also been domesticated in kitchen gardens and sold in markets, and in the northernmost Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Before you ask, I have no idea where you can get hold of seed or plants - my plants are sterile (no seed) - an exceptionally rare edimental (the garden website is here https://www.ntnu.edu/museum/the-onion-garden) #ALLIUMHUMILE #CHINA #EXCLUSIVEFOOD #HIMACHALPRADESH #INDIA #KASHMIR #LØKHAGENCHICAGO #ONIONGARDENCHICAGO #PAKISTAN #PERENNIALVEGETABLES #RINGVEBOTANISKEHAGEN #SNOWONIONS #SNØLØK #TRONDHEIM

This batch of perpetual leek seeds almost caught fire yesterday… I had just threshed the seed into a metal bowl and left it outside while I set up a winnowing station. I was inside for 5-10 minutes and when I looked outside the bowl was smoking! The sun was magnified onto the very dry and fluffy chaff and seed. Losing this seed would have been so sad, I don’t know of anyone else selling this variety right now. I’m grateful I caught it in time. Note to self- do not leave metal bowls outside! #delftperpetualleek #perennialvegetables

All week I have been making the most of #perennialvegetables. I've harvested at least a dozen varieties before gardening season starts, including skirret, jerusalem artichoke, crosne, groundnut, lovage, hops, solomon's seal, good king henry, ground elder, sorrel, angelica, and burdock. I've made soup, pasta, salads, and sautees. I also got to try two new vegetables this year: #sweetcicely (leaves and root) and the shoots of skirret. Pretty good start for 2024 #gardeningquebec

I'm transplanting Desmodium for our Seedling Sale and came across this little fairy tale scene in one of the pots. My mind does get away sometimes when I'm working with plants. Appropriately named: spring beauty (Claytonia virginica). A vernal species, which grows and flowers before the tree canopy closes over, this pretty little plant is native to eastern North America. It powers its early growth via tasty little tubers, known as fairy spuds. They’re best eaten cooked. I’m hoping my plant will seed and establish a colony in a shady part of the garden. #claytonia #fairyspuds #claytoniavirginica #vernalspecies #sprinephemeral #montiaceae #perennialvegetables #tubers #radixrootcrops #foraging #edimentals

Patiently waiting for the rhubarb to be ready for harvest. These beds needed some weeding and tidying. After spending Monday afternoon in the garden, this corner is looking much better. Now that these rhubarb plants are weeded I’m hoping for better growth. A soil topping of composted sheep manure will help too. I know my friends across the pond have been enjoying their rhubarb harvests, and I can’t wait for a first harvest of mine, along with a fresh baked rhubarb crumble cake! 😋 . . . . #rhubarb #rhubarbseason #rhabarber #mygardentoday #perennialvegetables #kitchengarden

My latest @savvygardening post is about growing arugula. The variety I planted last year, Voyager from @williamdamseeds has been providing me with loads of salads these last couple of weeks. Not only did my plants come back, but because I let it go to seed, I have a lot of seedlings coming up in random spots (as well as dill). While it’s nice to have extra plants, I have a few too many, so I think I’ll try to get a handle on the seed pods this fall! . . . #savvygardening #arugula #wildarugula #perennialvegetables #tarainthegarden #frontyardvegetablegarden #gardeningyourfrontyard

Alongside perennial herbs, I also sell perennial vegetables! My Dad kindly started these amazing Couve Galega (Perennial Tree Kale) for me and they’re turning into giants. Couve Galega or Walking Stick Kale is really common in Portugal where they make up one of the traditional ingredients of the delicious soup Caldo Verde. They rarely go to seed, are easy to take cuttings from, high in vitamins and evergreen! I’ll be bringing these beauties to the @craig_y_nos_farmers_market this Sunday ⭐️🍃🌱

Early May, zone 6 perennial vegetable tour: 1) Sea Kale - broccoli-like florets are perfect for harvesting right now 2) Skirret - a root vegetable you can cook like carrots 3) Mitsuba - Japanese Parsley 4) Seombadi - Korean Celery 5) Perennial Kale - going on year four 6) Hablitzia - a vigorous climbing leafy green 7) Egyptian Walking Onion 8) Perpetual Leek 9) Good King Henry, aka Lincolnshire Spinach - greens and flower heads are great for steaming and sauteeing 10) Sylvetta Perennial Arugula - peppery and spicy Due to the ten slide limit, I had to cut the Potato Onions, Nettles, Sorrel, Crosne, Ground Nut, Lovage, and Turkish Rocket, which are going off right now too. A very international spread, so many continents and cultures represented by all these plants. Perennials provide such vegetable abundance, with no annual seeding, transplanting, bed prep, or work. They just keep coming back year after year after year. These vegetables are genetically closer to their wild relatives, and as a result have higher nutrient density compared to annual vegetables. They don't seem to have the same pest or disease pressure that their annual counterparts do, either. In spring I appreciate them all the more, for how early they wake up and how quickly they start feeding us 💚 Who else is adding in more perennial vegetables to your gardens, and which are your favourites? #perennialvegetables #homesteaderskaleidoscopicperennialkalegrex #sylvettaarugula #seakale #hablitziatamnoides #lincolnshirespinach #mitsuba #seombadi

A hint of hopniss: seeds of Apios americana ‘South Jersey’ from @experimentalfarmnetwork are starting to germinate. Small-leaved Linden (Tilia cordata) has to be one of the most productive and long-lived salad plants you can grow. And at this stage, where many of the leaves are still in relatively tight clusters, they can also be dipped in batter and made into delicious tempura. While plants can be coppiced or pollarded to keep them smaller, mature Lindens often send out numerous shoots from their base, so they remain harvestable even at a considerable age and size. #edibletrees #edibleleaves #ediblenativeplants #perennialvegetables #permacultureplants #agroforestry #unusualedibles

Yacon’s back. It was a mild, wet winter, with a few hard frosts, followed by an exceptionally wet spring. Sometimes Smallanthus sonchifolius makes it through the winter in the ground here, sometimes it doesn’t. These beautiful perennial alliums are a really important part of what we grow, providing us with alliums all year round. In order the pics show Tree Onions, Shallots and Brown Potato Onions. We had fantastic crops again this year and have enough surplus to be able to sell some. They are all easy to grow, very productive and delicious and the best time for planting is May through July with harvest time late December through January. They also store really well. Highly recommended and great for everything onions would be used for and particularly good roasted. Check out our website for availability and how to grow these. Link in bio

Nightfall, nakhankam (Sium suave). A long term resident of our pond, nakhankam’s an edible umbellifer, with tuberous roots, usually known as water parsnip. I call it swamp skirret as it’s closely related to that crop (S. sisarum) and tastes similar, but grows in much wetter conditions. After the winter and spring we’ve had, that could be useful. Perhaps some of those waterlogging tolerant genes could be transferred to skirret or other umbellifer crops. #nakhankam #sium #apiaceae #skirret #plantbreeding #perennialvegetables #radixrootcrops #siumsuave #waterparsnip #siumsisarum #cropwildrelatives #umbellifers

Meet sea kale 🥬. We cover them with terracotta pots early spring to bleach them, it makes their stems long and sweet. I always leave a few plants without a cover and they form beautiful broccoli-like florets. These plants are at least 35 years old, they have been taken at @kasteel.hex by my father. This is the most versatile perennial vegetable if you ask me. When you want leek and potato soup but don’t have enough potatoes - green papaya to the rescue! This perennial “oerprei” leek is amazing! I harvested 3 from one of the rooftop containers and replanted 10 of its babies. It forms little bulbs like a garlic and expands rapidly into a huge clump. Japanese Pepper / Prickly-Ash (Zanthoxylum piperitum), a relative of the Szechuan peppers, valued as much for its leaves, known as Sansho, as for the aromatic, peppercorn-like seed husks. The leaves of this small tree are strongly aromatic, with a rich, warm scent somewhat similar to that of Rue (Ruta graveolens), but where that herb is bitter, these are deliciously spicy with a long, lingering citrusy aftertaste. #zanthoxylum #zanthoxylumpiperitum #japanesepepper #szechuanpepper #edibletrees #perennialvegetables #exoticspices #sansho #edibleleaves #edimentals

🌊🥬🌼 Sea Kale Blossoms 🌼🥬🌊 Happy May day! These beauties are #whatsbloomingnow in our garden. Sea Kale has fast become one of my favorite perennial vegetables because of its versatility in the garden and unique food value, but especially because for its beauty! I've been intently watching the sea kales on the daily since late winter when they started making their appearance from. The cold wet soil when not much else was growing yet. I look forward to these delicious blooms every spring! They remind me of a constellation of stars. They remind me of our own milky way nourishing us from afar. I am feeling especially nourished by sea kale's beauty on this May day 🤗 Coincidentally @nandrsn just made a post on blanching sea kale as a veggie using a clay pot and it looks delicious! What garden friends are especially calling to you this May day? 🌊🥬🌼💚🤗🙏🏼🌈

Manzana Pepper,Capsicum pubescens. It is a totally different species than most regular peppers encountered in the store. This can be a perennial pepper in milder climates. The heat on these can be anywhere from mild to incredibly hot. Fortunately this one is about as hot as a jalapeño pepper, I can deal with that. . It has black seeds and purple flowers which is kind of cool. We have had this one in the ground for about 4 years and would grow into a small tree if I let it. #permaculture #perennialvegetables #veggiegarden #sacramento #usdazone9b #johnnycucurbit #manzanapepper #capsicumpubescens

You know, gardening can be really hard when you have ADHD and a chronic pain disease. My attention and energy levels fluctuate so much over days/weeks/months that I often overcommit myself even to my own hobbies. The anticipation to start seedlings at the end of winter ends up being dread of having to actually harvest and deal with all these plants by the end of summer. One thing I've done to make things easier for myself is to focus on finding as many perennial versions of vegetables as I can to cut down on the amount of annual seeds I have to plant. With a cloche cover, some of my perennial greens stay green year-round. My sorrel was still pumping out leaves even over that crazy cold snap we had this winter. It also makes it easier knowing these are always on hand when I forget things while grocery shopping. Forgot the spinach? No worries, I have plenty of substitutes. Can you ever run out of kale when you grow perennial varieties that get up to 8 feet tall? Not likely. Need a full bag of arugula? Too bad, you're getting some. I am always on the hunt for new perennial varieties, but so far I have Salad Burnet (a cucumbery tasting green), Turkish rocket (more like little perpetual brocollinis), Good King Henry (perennial spinach), red-veined and regular lemon sorrel (lemony greens!), Sylvetta arugula (a super spicy arugula my kids love), 9 Star perennial broccoli (more like mini cauliflowers), lovage, Portugese walking stick kale, and Kaleidoscopic perennial kale. And when all else fails, eat the chickweed, goosefoot, plantain and dandelion. I got potato onions this year which sounded promising but I neglected them for a bit and they seem stunted (thanks ADHD). I have skirret, sunchokes, earth chestnuts and salsify babies that I've yet to try out. My runner beans sometimes come back if I remember to mulch them properly in the fall, but are there perennial versions of snap peas? 🤔 Honestly if we could make perennial carrots, cucumbers and red peppers I'd be set. #backyardharvest #backyardpermaculture #smallscalepermaculture #permaculture #growyourownfood #growfoodnotlawns #perennialvegetables #sorrel #goodkinghenry #saladburnet #sylvettaarugula

On the blog now....another experimental perennial vegetable garden update for the garden's second year. https://backyardlarder.co.uk/2024/04/experimental-perennial-vegetable-garden-year-2-update-1/ It should really fill out this year so I thought I'd keep posting! Also I've been adding in new plants when I realise that a particular 'high-yielder' is missing! Korean celery (Dystaenia takesimana) and sea beet added today. And some have added themselves - pretty sure there is a rampion (Campanula rapunculus) in the corner - a biennial bellflower with the most lovely blue flowers and crisp, white edible roots. (Possibly the herb that the mother-to-be in Grimm's 'Rapunzel' was gathering from the sorcerer's garden.) #perennialvegetables #perennialveg #edimentals #permaculture #permaculturegarden #permaculturegardening #allotments #newallotments #allotmentnewbies #sustainablegardening

Lucid dreaming: an apparently empty pot just revealed these self-sown ajekoshi (Lycopus lucidus) tubers. It’s also known as shirone or di sun (地笋(地笋). The slugs have been grazing off the emerging shoots, so I wasn’t aware of its presence. The tubers of the Chinese bugleweed are the biggest of all the Lycopus species I’ve grown and the plant itself is tall and statuesque, with attractive, shiny foliage. A well known plant in # #traditionalchinesemedicine , you can also eat the tubers raw or cooked. #lycopus #perennialvegetables #lycopuslucidus #chinesebugleweed #radixrootcrops #tubers #roots #edibletubers #plantbreeding #edimentals #aquaticplants #pondplants #tcm

The mashua is a little scarred by the late frost, but is still fighting on. . The plan is to encourage it to grow up the elder tree again, otherwise it will smother the path! . #mashua #growingmashua #perennialvegetables #foodforest #foodforestgarden #foodforestuk #forestgardenuk #forestgarden #sustainablefoodsystems
