You can tell summer is on the way when the geums start becoming the main star of the show. These really are a staple for us at this time of year as the spring flowers fade away but the summer flowers aren't quite in bloom yet. We call this the May flower gap as it's a 2 week period mid to end of May where our options for flowers are more limited. That's why I love geums so much as they plug this gap perfectly, and paired with ranunculus, the first delphiniums and the last of the tulips you really can't go wrong! This week, we finally got round to clearing more beds, we planted loads of veg and flowers and liberated some perennials from the clutches of the infernal couch grass (thank you Anushka for your help with this!) It still doesn't feel very spring like here on the farm but the flowers are coming and many of you now have them in your homes after Uplands Market. So here are my top 5 tips for keeping them fresh and looking their best for as long as possible 1/ Make sure your vase is so clean that you would drink out of it. I try to now always buy vases I know I can just pop in the dishwasher to make this easier. 2/Fill your vase right up with fresh clean tap water. Add a flower food if you have some as this helps to lower the PH of the water and adds a bit of sugar to the water. 3/Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like a fire or a radiator. They do look gorgeous on the mantle of your fire place but if you light the fire move them somewhere cooler until the fire is out. 4/Keep an eye on the water level in your vase. British flowers are really thirsty and your vase can go dry much quicker than you might think! 5/ Refresh the water in your vase at least once a week. You can take out any sad looking flowers and recut the stems (unless they are daffodils! don't recut those) of those still looking good. So much mulching to do here at the moment. We've done more in the cider/culinary orchard yesterday, using our local farmer's wasted hay from last summer. The apples are blossoming up well and the mulch will help them grow more this year, with less weed pressure, keep roots damp in dry spells, as well as provide extra food as the hay decomposes. Over this Easter weekend, we've really been appreciating the new spring growth throughout the nursery, especially amongst our ever-expanding perennial vegetable collection. We had to share! Outside, we've got Jerusalem Artichokes, Chinese Artichokes and Asparagus spikes starting to break through! Skirret is springing back with new growth after winter, Perutile Onions have been repotted, Welsh and Egyptian Walking Onions are also filling out nicely. Inside the polytunnel, we have Oca sprouting, Mashua starting to take over, Taunton Deane and V. Daubenton Perennial Kale bulking up, new Oerpri Perlzwiebel pearl onion/leeks recently added to our collection to grow out, and baby Babington leeks are growing stronger every day. We love perennial vegetables are building our collection and subsequent offers this year. Recently we've been very busy propagating and collating stock. This is normal for this time of year, but this season we're pushing harder across all of our offerings. Over the past month, we've grafted 120 new apple tree cultivars (alongside our existing collection), spanning over 500 grafts, across 8 rootstock types, to be able to provide a wider breadth of apples, which will grow to different sizes, suitable for more of our customers' spaces. Some of the apples we're most excited about adding to our collection are: -Barcelona Pearmain -Pendragon -Llanarchaeron Peach -Keswick Codlin -Bellefleur Krasnyi -Scarlet Surprise -Reinette Ananas -Pride of Dinefwr (a very recent discovery of Parc Dinefwr, Llandeilo) We've made an effort to increase our Welsh and Red Flesh apple offerings as well 😊 Availability lists of this season's grafts will be released in late summer. This year every week I will be doing a special feature on a different flower that we grow here on the flower farm. Each post will have my top tips for growing the flower and will explain why I grow it and why it made the grade to be included in the cutting field this year. I hope you enjoy this little series and would love to hear what you think. An extra thing to note when cutting daffodils. The clear sap they ooze when cut can be toxic to other cut flowers and will shorten their vase life. These are one of the few cut flowers I don't recommend to recut the stems unless they are in their very own vase. ✨Workshop Updates✨ For years we have been receiving messages from you guys about us holding workshops, as you want to learn how to create art using flowers, and also find out more about flower farming. This has always been something we've wanted to do, but up until now we have only had a small barn on our land with just enough parking for 3 cars so it just hasn't been possible...but we have been busy over the winter, and from spring we have access to a brand new workshop space just a 5 minute drive from the flower farm (in the hills above Abergele), as we are turning one of our neighbours barns into our brand new floral hub for workshops! This means we are so excited to announce our first workshop in our new space... A lovely afternoon of cream teas and creating a beautiful dried flower heart out of a natural stick and wire frame, using flowers we grew and dried on the farm last year🌱 The workshop will be on Sat 16th March 2pm- 4.30pm, so as it's so close to Mother's day why not come along with your mum for a afternoon of crafting, making memories and you will even have a beautiful dried heart to take away at the end of it which will last you for years to come🌸 Tickets are £45, or if you book before 1st March and use the discount code 'workshopearlybird' at checkout, you will get £5 off every ticket.
