Guess what we’ve been doing today? Growing for, and creating, totally sustainable farewell flower arrangements forms an important part of what we do @ladidardyflowers. It is always an honour to be asked to provide our flowers for a loved one’s farewell. This is the case for most of us sustainability led flower farmers and artisan florists. We don’t use green floral foam but we do use locally grown flowers and foliage and our arrangements are totally natural and compostable. And so today. With huge thanks to Justine @farhillflowers we turned up with our buckets of flowers for a day to talk about sustainable funeral flowers and practice creating some coffin arrangements. A beautiful willow coffin from @wyldwoodwillow was then made available for a bit of a photoshoot, which we all made the most of.
We're still struggling with wet & cold soils here - it feels like one step forwards & two back at the moment. Even so, May is definitely time to move on with sowing for summer crops. If you're also having bad weather, think about starting things under cover in trays or modules to give your seedlings a bit of a head start. Remember, light is at least as important as warmth. For everything other than the heat lovers (see the first pic) somewhere outdoors with full daylight is the best bet. If you can improvise some kind of cold frame - eg with old windows - to keep the rain off, that's ideal. Make sure to have lots of ventilation to avoid cooking your seedlings. Anything that you do start indoors, harden off thoroughly, and really do make sure not to let seedlings get leggy & soft, that's the surest route to a good meal for a slug when you do put them out. It's been another very busy month here, with the start of Plant Fair season and general nursery boom time! On this dull, wet Tuesday, we wanted to share one of our favourite, happy places at the moment: the second polytunnel which is nurturing our 9cm herbs through spring, giving them that extra warmth and protection. It's a really peaceful space at the moment, away from the busyness elsewhere. Full of opportunity, delicious heady smells fill the air when the sun is out. The pictures featured show the new polytunnel bench completed in the middle of March, then filled with herbs at the end of March and the herbs now, on the last day of April. Polytunnel magic! My little patch of wild garlic is growing nicely at the bottom of the garden. This was part of an original patch from my garden in Cardiff in the 1990's taken to Hampshire in 1996 and brought back home to Wales in 2021. Wild garlic pesto is the best. April tulips - perfect for birthday gifting. This is a favourite combination. I can’t quite work out what the bluebells add but they do add something wonderful. It could be all about the shimmer or lustre. I’ll be taking a few buckets of tulips to our workshop on Friday @welshacademyofart with @minnie_la_la_designs but there should be plenty left for bouquets and flower jars. Hopefully we’ll be adding lilac as the bluebells might be finished by then. And then there’s fresh cherry leaf to be added. Pure happiness 🥰

🌱🌱 More on the hungry gap 🌱🌱 I posted earlier about the joys of perennials at this point in spring. They're fantastic for providing fresh greens & really brightening up your meals. With a bit of planning, there's lots more things you can do to help get through the hungry gap - without having to resort to imported vegetables - and while still eating varied tasty meals. Storage: Most stored veg is getting past it by now, but the long storing squashes (particularly the hubbards) will generally keep into May, & are wonderful for roasting & soups. Preserving: Dried peas & beans are one of the easiest home grown veg to store. The Latvian soup peas in the pic make my absolute favourite hummus style dip. Zitava & other thinner fleshed sweet peppers dry well, and are really tasty added into all sorts of dishes. We also always make lots of passata from our tomatoes, though that does depend on having a reasonable amount of storage space. Freezing: Again, dependent on having a freezer, but we freeze sweet peppers halved & deseeded, they work perfectly in any cooked dish. We also freeze chillies the same way, plus blanched french beans. Not veg, but right now is also when we really make the most of frozen blackcurrants and gooseberries from last summer (these are also great bottled). Super-quick fresh options: Peas are really very hardy, & you can get an even quicker crop from them by sowing thickly in a tub & harvesting for pea shoots. If you're planning to do this, ideally save some of your own seed the previous season, as it goes through lots of seed (though they will re-grow a few times). If you've got lots of saved seed then radish, amaranth, orach, beetroot & of course cress all make fantastic micro-greens grown mustard-and-cress style on a windowsill. 🌻 I'm sure I've missed things, so tell us all your favourite tips for beating the hungry gap in the comments below 🌻 #realseeds #organicseeds #growninwales #hungrygap #eatseasonal #localfood #foodsovereignty

🍅 🌱 We always get a few emails at this time of year from gardeners worried about their tomato seedlings. If you've got seedlings that look like the one on the right, don't worry! Tomato leaves are really variable, and they'll just be a 'potato leaf' variety, with smooth rather than serrated edge leaves. The ones in the picture are variety Lotos, which is a beautiful pale yellow salad tomato. On the left is a Primabella cherry tomato seedling, which has a more typical serrated shape leaf. We're having another very soggy spring here in Pembrokeshire. It's hard to avoid getting twitchy, but I keep reminding myself that a bit of patience at this time of year always pays off. Sowing a bit later might feel like it's putting you back, but seeds that go into warmer soil will germinate faster & catch up then overtake seedlings that have struggled in colder damper conditions. Parsnips are a classic example where seeds sown in very late April or in May will outperform earlier sowings in pretty much every season. Sweetcorn is another crop where seeds sown or seedlings planted out when the weather hasn't warmed up will tend to just linger & never really thrive. They're also one of the exceptions to the (very rough) 6 week rule from sowing to planting out as they grow so fast in good conditions, so we never sow before May. #realseeds #organicseeds #growninwales #seedsowing #seedstarting #growyourown #kitchengarden #bepatient
We have redesigned and upscaled the flower field this year so we can grow more lovely flowers. We use the no dig method to create our beds which looks after our soil, sequesters carbon and cares for all of our lovely 'colleagues' out in the field. We have been experimenting with different techniques to suppress the weeds and boost the soil microbiology including cardboard, sheeps fleece, top soil, compost and green manure (growing a crop to be cut and break down to feed the soil).
