My latest @savvygardening post is about growing arugula. The variety I planted last year, Voyager from @williamdamseeds has been providing me with loads of salads these last couple of weeks. Not only did my plants come back, but because I let it go to seed, I have a lot of seedlings coming up in random spots (as well as dill). While it’s nice to have extra plants, I have a few too many, so I think I’ll try to get a handle on the seed pods this fall! . . . #savvygardening #arugula #wildarugula #perennialvegetables #tarainthegarden #frontyardvegetablegarden #gardeningyourfrontyard

My 12-year-old niece joked that she brought a book to a recent family dinner so she didn’t have to listen to us talk about the price of groceries. 😂 I won’t bore you with my rants about grocery prices. But it got me thinking about money-saving tips for growing your own food. I avoid clamshell packets of herbs at all costs, so I make sure to grow my own. Growing from seed is always the cheapest choice. But if you’re going to purchase seedlings, some plants provide extra value. When it comes to a pot of basil or parsley, It may look like you’re getting one robust plant, but it’s likely a bunch of little seedlings. They’ll look small and spindly at first when you take the “plant” apart, but each individual seedling will grow into a healthy plant. My recent basil purchase yielded 26 seedlings and a flat-leaf parsley purchase about 29. . . . #growingbasil #growingparsley #herbgardening #tarainthegarden #savvygardening #herbgrowingtips

I love that kale is a biennial. If you can keep it alive over the winter, it’s possible to get a few spring harvests before it flowers. Last year, I let a couple of kale plants go to seed in one of my raised beds and late in the summer, all these little seedlings appeared. I moved some of them into my front yard raised bed that has row cover protecting it and the plants are big and happy. . . . #tarainthegarden #growingkale #gardeningyourfrontyard #savvygardening #frontyardveggies #sproutboxgarden #springveggies

The first daffodils to bloom are my Ice Follies in the front garden. The flowers are pointing a bit downwards as if they’re still unsure of the weather. My prairie smoke is starting to bloom — just the one in the sunny front yard. The one out back is further behind. I love this stage, but my favourite is when they look like tufty Troll dolls. My Puschkinia Libanotica is blooming about three weeks early. The flowers are so small and close to the ground, they’re hard to capture, but easy to spot because of the contrast against the leaf litter. I had forgotten I planted snowdrops in my front garden, but all of a sudden, I was seeing these little shoots popping up through the soil. Then tiny white buds, closed up tight. With the mild temperatures we’ve been having, and snow drop sightings, I’ve been on winter aconite watch. At the end of last week, I checked on my little patch around the side of my shed. My latest @savvygardening article is about growing liatris. To me it’s a pretty perfect perennial: four-season interest, deer resistant, pollinator magnet, drought and heat tolerant. There was so much frost yesterday morning the car windows had to be scraped. Today it was warm and sunny, and a lot of my plants seemed to have shrugged off the cold temps - even most of my tomatoes that are left! My pumpkin patch was a bit of a bust this year. It’s my fault… I have a big new back garden, so when I ran out of raised bed space, I figured it’s a great place for the plants to sprawl out. But with the tree canopy, they just didn’t get enough heat and light—though it was also exceptionally rainy. I did get a few squash, including a couple of these cute little Dumplings. These mums self-sowed from a plant that was in the garden above. This “garden” is a thin strip of soil that runs along the side of a raised concrete front garden attached to the house. The soil is poor and it doesn’t get any rain and yet the one little plant has multiplied (see second slide) and comes back every year. The garden is winding down, but I’m still harvesting loads of tomatoes (because they were so behind this year), peppers and tomatillos. This weekend I roasted tomatoes for a spaghetti sauce that included garlic, a sweet pepper, a jalapeño, oregano and basil from the garden, roasted tomatillos and poblano peppers for soup and pickled jalapeños. To celebrate the fall equinox, I thought I’d share a favourite fall flower: Asters. They are blooming everywhere right now, including around my yard, even though I didn’t plant them. A view of my front yard raised beds. I’m so happy I moved all the heat lovers to the front yard. Living on a ravine, the tree canopy has spread over time, blocking out the sun to my original backyard raised beds at certain times of the day. Things are looking a bit wild at this time of year, but this spring and summer the front bed has provided me with cabbage, pak choy, broccolini, garlic, beets, peas, dill, cilantro, lettuces, basil, tomatoes, jalapeños, poblano peppers, and tomatillos. Marigolds and zinnias flank the front and back, currently. The back one currently has a couple of tomato plants, zucchini, basil, a sweet pepper, and towering sunflowers. . . . #frontyardvegetablegarden #raisedbedrevolution #raisedbedgardening #tarainthegarden #savvygardening #gardeningyourfrontyard #sproutboxgarden

Picked these poblanos and jalapeños (and some tomatillos) this evening to make posole verde. I found the recipe on the @mexplease website a couple of years ago and it’s become a favourite. It’s also a great way to use up an abundance of tomatillos and peppers, and I love that all the green veggies (and garlic) required to make it came from my front yard veggie garden. The sunflowers in my front yard raised bed tower over my head - I had to stand on tiptoe and raise my arms to take this photo. It’s been a strange gardening season… despite all the sun and ample rain, my tomatoes are very slow to ripen. And my peppers (besides the jalapeños) are just starting to slowly come in now. My peppers are very slow this year, so I was happy to have three jalapeños ready to pick. Liatris is one of my favourite summer flowers. I dug in one good-sized perennial a few years ago and now I have a well-established patch! The soil is poor (though I have been working to amend it), and the site is hot, sunny and dry, but the plants love it. And those long tufts are currently covered in bees! When they dry out, they’ll be covered in birds, looking for the seeds. Glad I left a cage over my kale in the front yard. It’s been thriving! I also found two untouched in a backyard raised bed, which I’m surprised about because the deer were back there. Buds are starting to appear because they’re last year’s plants, so this may be one of the last harvests. I got enough to pack into my salad spinner, but of course when stir fried it wilted down to nothing! 😂 . . . #kale #growingkale #frontyardveggiegarden #tarainthegarden #savvygardening #raisedbedrevolution #gardeningyourfrontyard #springvegetables

I kinda missed my hellebores in their prime this year. That’s what happens when you plant them in a garden on a side of the house where you don’t really tend to walk past often. Hopefully my neighbour enjoyed them. Even as they start to fade, the flowers are pretty cool when you get up close. . . . #hellebore #springperennials #tarainthegarden #savvygardening #helleborus #springflowers

Muscari grows so low to the ground, you almost have to get onto your belly to admire it properly! . . . #muscari #grapehyacinths #springfloweringbulbs #gardeningyourfrontyard #tarainthegarden #savvygardening #frontyardgarden #springbulbs

Some wet, shivering daffodils in my front garden, probably wondering why they bothered to bloom! These are from the yellow and white mix I purchased in the fall from @backyardbloomery. . . . #daffodils #narcissus #springfloweringbulbs #tarainthegarden #savvygardening #gardeningyourfrontyard

Prairie Smoke in my front yard garden. I need to plant more! This native plant is drought tolerant and the bumblebees love it. It’s also deer resistant. . . . #prairiesmoke #geumtriflorum #nativeplants #ontarionativeplants #tarainthegarden #springflowers #savvygardening #gardeningyourfrontyard #frontyardgarden

Ice Follies is the first daffodil to bloom in my front garden. There are others, but they don’t seem to want to wake up yet. I’m sure this morning’s snowflakes provide little encouragement. . . . #icefollies #daffodilseason #daffodil #narcissus #springfloweringbulbs #springflowers #tarainthegarden #gardeningyourfrontyard #savvygardening #frontyardgarden

This week’s weather has really kickstarted the garden. In fact I think some plants are a bit confused by the temperatures. Chionodoxa, though, is right on time! And you’d never know we had torrential rain a couple of weeks ago. All the soft spots in the yard are gone. Everything is SO dry! . . . #chionodoxa #gloryofthesnow #springfloweringbulbs #tarainthegarden #savvygardening #springgarden

My neighbour has anemone blanda flowers all through his front garden. Several metres away, this one makes an appearance in my lawn each spring. . . . #anemoneblanda #grecianwindflower #windflowers #springblooms #gardeningyourfrontyard #tarainthegarden #springflowers
