A hot May day ends in a thunderstorm. Turkish rocket flowers are glowing in this light! Lilacs are over, some of the wild geraniums have peaked. I started some seed trays and some direct seeding of the same to see what does better. Then I had to bring in the trays because, well, not a good idea to flood them. Otherwise obsessed over yarn color for making the the hard fork and painful painful shift to Procion, but it will all be for the good. Been dying and redying for two weeks. Stared at my jacks photos, and then stared more. Changed my pattern to be a bit larger, now my new loom can accommodate it. Maybe even be weaving by the end of day tomorrow, who knows. #turkishrocket #prociondye #jackinthepulpit

Perennial vegetable plants just beginning to give tasty flower bud shoots. Looks like this year the seakale and Good King Henry are a bit ahead of the Turkish rocket, I've eaten them all together before. I'm sure I read that scorzonera had particularly delicious flower bud shoots (last photo) but I didn't find the ones I tried today very good at all. But I nibbled a couple of buck's horn plantain flower shoots - nutty and nice but also like something that I couldn't place (fishy maybe? not sure!) #seakale #goodkinghenry #turkishrocket #scorzonera #perennialvegetables #perennialveg #edimentals #permaculture #permaculturegarden #permaculturegardening #allotments #newallotments #allotmentnewbies #sustainablegardening

Turkish rocket / Orientalisches Zackenschötchen / bunias orientalis Finally, meadow munchie season is back! The sun is shining and it starts to get green outside 💚 The turkish rocket is one of the first plants to grow, unfortunately it's an invasive species which means that it doesn't belong here originally and can threaten the native flora by quickly overgrowing large meadows and repressing native plants. However, the bunnies love especially the young leaves that can now be found everywhere, so they're happily helping to save the environment by devouring the little evil treats. 👹 (As always with a mixture of other greens) #bunnytime #healthybunny #foragingforfood #bunniesneedspace #bunnylovers #rabbitcare #happybunnyhomes #bunnyandbeagle #turkishrocket #edibleplants #rabbitsofinstagram #meadowmunchies

Slooowly waking up from hibernation mode (and not quite ready for seedling season yet), but I’m glad to have gathered up some interesting new things to try this year. I’m most excited to have found Caucasian Spinach, Korean Celery, Turkish Rocket, and Oca. Just getting a few things stratified for now though. Although this February sun feels warm, we still have a long way to go. It looks like the walking onions in our extra hot spot (south wall) will win the race for earliest veggies this year though! #perennialvegetables #ontariopermaculture #caucasianspinach #koreancelery #turkishrocket #oca #walkingonion #coldclimategardening

I don't mind saying that I do the majority of the work at this plot - weeding, planting, harvesting, preserving is pretty much me. But I would not want to do this without my lovely hubby who, having got up at 4am and just arrived home from a shift at work, comes straight to the allotment when I call him to announce that there's been a woodchip delivery. 90 minutes later and all of the paths are topped up and a fresh layer has been applied to the raspberry and strawberry beds. That's true love, that is. 😘 . In other exciting news, we ate our first Turkish rocket with dinner alongside the obligatory helping of tree cabbage, some perennial onion greens and a load of chives. All delicious. 🌱 . #Allotment . . . #PerennialVegetables #EatWhatYouGrow #EatYourGreens @realseeds #RealSeedCompany #RealSeeds #AsturianTreeCabbage @plantspennard #TurkishRocket #WelshOnion #EdibleAlliums

Finally got the luffa and yard long bean trellis up in the new garden bed. We’ve been going full tilt trying to not only get plants into the ground but also the infrastructure in place to be able to grow everything. Gosh next year’s gardening season will be so much easier as we will have all the beds and trellises in place that we didn’t have at the start of this season. Not expecting to get much in the way of luffas this year given how late in the season it is but I’m so pleased with how well this bed has turned out. The bush beans, yard long beans, jalapeños, sugar baby watermelons, Turkish rocket, sugar & Casper pumpkins, crookneck squash, and various herbs are already happily growing. And just planted some beets and radishes for a Fall crop, with Dahlias and strawberry spinach growing in containers on each end. Even 2 of our luffas got pollinated once we got the luffa up on the trellis. After the thunderstorms this weekend have passed we will put up the netting along the top and backside for the yard long beans and luffa to grow up on. TURKISH BROCKETS This week, the tastiest part of turkish rocket / russekål (Bunias orientalis), the broccolis (affectionately known as brockets here!), were ready to harvest! Although considered an unwanted invasive nowadays in Norway, my 30 year old plant has never produced a seed. However, the plant died (I thought) a couple of years ago only for a number of new plants to appear from the roots some distance away. I hadn't realised it did this. I was also puzzled to read on the Norwegian invasive species database that it is biennial and spreads aggressively by seed (see https://artsdatabanken.no/Fab2018/N/602). Anyway, it made a delicious lunch stir-fried with St. George's mushroom (vårfagerhatt), some leftover cooked potatoes and mixed into scrambled egg with chili and garlic. Turkish rocket (Bunias orientalis) shining from the shade - this is a super hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance perennial vegetable. The leaves are really far too peppery for me, even the young ones (haven't tried cooking them yet which may help as it does with other peppery vegetables!) The flower spikes are tastier - you have to be on the ball to catch them though as you harvest as florets, before they open.

Perennial green abundance! So many great perennial greens are at their peak in the spring. We enjoyed these beauties “kale chipped” and in soup a couple nights ago. Turkish rocket, Bunias Orientalis, or "perennial broccoli raab". Sorry, I already ate the bigger florets! But I need to start more of these - or split what I've grown! Three plants have provided maybe four servings thus far. The flavor is similar to broccoli raab, but milder. They took a few years to start generating much in the way of broccolis, so this plant is an investment of time! #buniasorientalis #perennialbroccoliraab #turkishrocket #broccoliraab #perennialfoods

Turkish rocket is one of my most favourite perennials. It is typically one of the first to produce florets in early spring. The leaves are edible too, and I hear that they are tastiest in the winter as they are a bit sweeter, but more tender in the spring time. Have you ever tried the leaves? If so, how did you prep them, what time of year was it harvested, and did you like it? My plants are a little far behind this year due to the stress of the move, but they’ll bounce back quick enough, and hopefully give some sort of yield this year. Seeds for this useful variety can be acquired from my seed shop. The link can be found in the bio on my main page. #turkishrocket #buniasorientalis #perennial #perennialgarden #gardenbed #brassica #broccoli #cauliflower #arugula #springharvest #gyo #eatyouryard #gardening #pnwgardening #pnwgarden #smallislandseedco

Also planted some perennial vegetables: #seakale #turkishrocket #goodkinghenry #yamvine #rhubarb #strawberry #spiderwort #skirret #fennel #asparagus #jerusalemartichoke #walkingonions And we weeded and sheetmulched all the mugwort around the raised beds in the fenced in garden, it was getting outta control. Bunias orientalis (Turkish Rocket, Bastard Cabbage) florets have formed. — Alongside Dame’s Rocket (Hesperis matronalis), Bastard Cabbage is the last of the tall mustards to move into flower in my area. Like all of these, it is naturalized and becoming more widespread in disturbed ground and other anthropogenic habitats. I see it particularly in open areas on floodplains here in Western Central NJ. — Bunias is among the milder of tall mustards, with a tasty shoot that is appealingly bitter, like a spicy broccoli. Much like Dame’s Rocket I have no problem eating these raw, though they are definitely more assertive than the former. The small bumps along the stem (see third pic) are called tubercules and are sometimes described as bumps or warts, these are a natural aspect of the species. — The seedpods of this plant are very tough and can be difficult to crush until very ripe, I often collect these and dry them to be ground into an excellent dry mustard powder. — #wildfood #wildvegetables #foraging #edibleplants #edibleweeds #invasivore #brassicaceae #wildmustard #buniasorientalis #bastardcabbage #turkishrocket

Bunias orientalis (Turkish Rocket / Bastard Cabbage) rosettes are popping up, following the first wave of the small wild mustards flowering (Cardamine hirsuta and Thlaspi alliaceum). — Like all members of the Brassicaceae (Mustard Family) this plant is edible from root to seed. Like many of them it often grows in somewhat questionable areas, liking disturbed ground with minimal maintenance. — Most akin to Hesperis matronalis (Dames Rocket), but slightly after it in terms of season, this plant produces delicious shoots as it moves into flower, much like small broccoli florets with a tasty stem. The other primary use I have for it is the seeds, which are extremely tough balls, hard to crush open for the tiny seeds, but very easy to grind once dry for a mustard powder. I combine this with the easier to collect wild mustard seeds like Hesperis and Alliaria to make prepared mustards. It is also excellent in dressings, sauces and dry rubs. — Like most of the tall flowering mustards, this plant is introduced and can become invasive. Like all of them it can be an excellent perennial vegetable plant, with lots of potential for sustainable harvests down the road. — #wildfood #brassicaceae #wildmustard #buniasorientalis #turkishrocket #bastardcabbage #wildspice #foraging #sustainablefood #invasivore #invasiveplants

Crab spiders are so cool! These guys can actually change their colour to match the petals of the flower they're perched on. This camouflage helps them to catch insects as they fly from flower to flower. I happened to catch a glimpse of this guy at just the right moment. Its shade of yellow is exactly the same as the turkish rocket flowers. I know it's just a marking and not actually its mouth, but just look at that face 😂 #crabspider #spider #arachnid #turkishrocket #buniasorientalis #homesteading #urbanfarm #seeds #seedfarm #seedsaving #rareseeds #rareplants #heirloom #agriculture #gardening #garden #vegetables #plants #greenthumb #gyo #pnw #pnwgardening #growyourown #bcgardening #vancouverisland #protectionisland #smallislandseedco

Turkish rocket, a perennial broccoli, is ready for it’s second harvest. Thank you @ediblelandscapes

5/15/2022, 5:08:58 PM

Better than broccoli? Yes! Way better! Here are 3 PERENNIAL "broccolis", each of which tastes as good as, or better than, conventional broccoli. From left to right: Turkish rocket, Sea kale, and perennial kale/collards. The easiest, best-tasting, and most prolific is SEA KALE. The broccolis are large, sweet, and have none of the sulfurous after-smell of ordinary broccoli. The stalks are more tender; it's bug-free (in my garden, anyhow) and, once established, really hard to kill! You can eat it to death, yes, but that's not usually an issue once established. If you make it to year three, you'll probably have it forever. The second best is perennial kale/collard from the Homesteader's Kaleidoscopic Perennial Kale Grex. It tastes great but, later in the season, I have to deal with whitefly and, TBH, it's not always perennial. Turkish rocket (a.k.a. perennial broccoli raab) is tasty, too, but not as prolific. The buds are small and stalks can be fibrous. This is only my second year with Turkish rocket but it appears to be quite hardy and pest-free. Yum!!! . . . #seakale #turkishrocket #perennialkale #perennialbroccoli #perennialbroccoliraab

Turkish rocket is a reliable friend. He may sleep in the winter, but come spring he's one of the first ones to wake for a snip of fresh greens, followed by broccoli-like florets that transition to showy yellow flowers that attract beneficials to your garden. They are also hardy and deer resistant too! I recommend it for anyone who lives in this climate. You should have atleast one. If you are wondering where to get them, I grew these out from my seed and have them available for sale now: yes, you can plant them now because they are hardy. #turkishrocket #imitatingeden #clevelandgrown #permaculture #permacultureplants #greeningthecity #sustainablecleveland #sustainablecityliving #urbanpermaculture #sustainablelife #sustaininglife #thegoodlife #greatplants #goodstuff #zone5gardening #clevelandgrown #clevelandheights #landscapedesign #ediblelandscaping #landscapedesigner #yellowflowers #foodplant #permacultureplant #growthemovement

I had an overdue visit to the allotment. There's a bit of tidying to do, but things are springing to life, and it's in better shape than I had thought it would be given my neglect over winter. 1 - Rhubarb, both early and late varieties 2 - Hablitzia tamnoides starting to sprout 3 - Turkish rocket 4 - Garlic. I didn't plant garlic there for a couple of years, so a nice surprise. 5 - Sculpit/Stridolo 6 - Sweet cicely . . . #Allotment #GrowYourOwn #GrowYourOwnVeg #GYO #PrettyPlot #EdibleGarden #AllotmentLife #Gardening #HomeGrown #SeedToTable #InstaGarden #AllotmentLove #Allotments #AllotmentUK #AllotmentGarden #AllotmentsOfInstagram #GrowingFood #VegPatch #DidcotAllotment #DidcotAllotments #DidcotAllotmentSociety #rhubarb #hablitziatamnoides #sweetcicely #turkishrocket #sculpit #stridolo #garlic

More food, less lawn! A fun grass-to-garden conversion yesterday in Falmouth. This is our favorite type of work. I gathered a small bowl of turkish rocket seeds today. They're not the smallest seeds, so I'm going to let them dry for a couple weeks before making them available through the shop. I'll be sure to make an announcement when the time comes. Despite the name, Turkish rocket isn't typically eaten in the same way as arugula, even though the leaves are edible. Its actually the florets that are most often eaten. I guess you could say its more like a broccoli or raab. Turkish rocket is possibly the most hardy plant in the garden. Its a low maintenance perennial that will live for many years. There's records of the roots travelling 30 feet into the soil, so even during times of extreme drought, the plants are able to find a source of water. They're extremely cold hardy and pest resistant too. The florets are one of the first vegetables of spring, and the plants are super prolific, so Turkish rocket is a valuable crop to grow in the garden. #turkishrocket #buniasorientalis #rocket #raab #broccoli #brassica #perennialbroccoli #perennial #perennialgarden #wintergardening #wintergarden #homesteading #urbanfarm #seeds #seedfarm #seedsaving #rareseeds #rareplants #heirloom #agriculture #gardening #garden #vegetables #plants #greenthumb #gyo #pnw #pnwgardening #growyourown #bcgardening

A rather invasive hill mustard that is apparently quite delicious. #Dailypicture for day 156 of #365daysofwalking with 10.2k steps donated and dreams of colder weather. #nature #flowers #perennials #turkishrocket #citywalk #mentalhealth #donatingsteps #atleast6kstepsaday

Wow. The Turkish rocket is getting nicely established now, and flowering, and attracting pollinators. . . . #turkishrocket #edimentals #edibleperrenials #zone3 #farm #farmlife #homestead #homesteading #NWO #northwesternontario #canada

Flower buds and broccolis from perennial vegetables As we approach midsummer many of my perennial vegetables are beginning to flower and from spring leaves and shoots we are now in the flower bud, scape (flower stem) and broccoli stage. Many stronger tasting plants have much milder upperparts than the earlier growth. This is presumably because the plants transfer their energy from insect defence to seed production. http://www.edimentals.com/blog/?p=29091 #flowerscapes #scapes #edibleflowerstems #broccolis #flowerbuds #perennialvegetables #theediblegarden #aroundtheworldin80plants #midsummergreens #crambemaritima #seakale #strandkål #rumexacetosa #sorrel #engsyre #crambecordifolia #heartleafcrambe #buskstrandkål #buniasorientalis #turkishrocket #russekål #alliumxproliferum #topsetonion #luftløk

Favoriten i stekpannan just nu: Ryssgubbe. 🥦 Fler tips i min bok Vildvuxet 🥦 Mycket C-vitaminer. 🥦 Bunias orientalis 🥦 Turkish rocket - invasive weed or abundant vegetable? In either case, great food. I like to stir fry the buds together with broccoli. Very tasty! Think mustard, wasabi. Spicy. Pungent. 🥦 Rich in Vitamin C. 🥦 #buneaorientalis #ryssgubbe #turkishrocket #forage #wildedible #urbanforaging #vildagrönsaker #vildvuxet

Greens Steamed in Sauce or Excuse to Eat More More Than Handful of Sweet Cicely Seeds. Mirepoix of carrots and onion, olive oil and a fresh bay leaf in there. Let that gently sauté while I go out and find greens (throw a some water on that pan to be sure I don’t end up burning the whole thing in the meantime). The last flower shoots of Turkish rocket (Bunias orientalis), new flower shoots of Musk mallow (Malva moschata), the most tender and succulent part of the plant, I take a lot of those … There’s a honey mint patch that’s growing a bit outside of its boundary, some bright herb flavors will do me good, I keep the mint in check by harvesting it slightly violently, uprooting a few rhizomes and discarding most of the fibrous stems there, grab and drop kitchen prep, then a handful of wild oregano and a handful too of green immature seeds of sweet cicely that taste like candy right now (if you tell kids about these seeds they will graze on them more madly than rabbits, you’ll probably need child fencing around your patch). Inside, the mirepoix is translucent and only slightly dry, which is how I like it (hooray fire alarm didn’t start), deglaze pan with a bit of vinegar and canned tomato, spoon of chili paste, maybe a few drops of condiment I forgot. Scrape up any bits that are stuck to the pan, but it’s not a lot. Greens and herbs in there to steam in the sauce, leave some for garnish, lid on for a moment. Shoots are now bright green and tender. Finish with some cottage cheese and garnish with mint and sweet cicely seeds (I go out and pick some more because I like them so much a handful was not enough).
