. What a great day for class two of nine of Herbal self-care. This class was focused on what herbal allies are growing around us, and how can we incorporate them into our daily routines. We started yesterdays class with grounding into the space & introductions, a cup of tea and a reminder from the first class about the formula triangle. After, we went out for a plant walk where we learned about different plants around the @fleurandforageatl herbal studio's garden. While on our walk-about we harvested Nettle, Chickweed, and Wood Sorrel to make fresh wild pesto (including a couple other ingredients.) It was fun to have everyone help us with creating the blend and fine-tuning the recipe for our afternoon snack. After, we started working on the formula for the herbal shaker aka, the voted name, the summer shaker... Fun note, all ingredients could be found in the herbal studio's garden... As a group we chose to keep the formula for the herbal shaker more focused on nutrition. We decided; nettle lf, dandelion lf, lemon balm lf, plantain lf, calendula fl, and violet lf. By the end of the class majority of the pesto was gone, everyone was able to take a shaker home, plus we saved a couple shakers to share at the potluck for the end of the year party/class... Looking forward to our next class on June 15th! What do you see? I see a field full of food and medicine. A beautiful balance of many plants. Once upon a time we opened our doors to this view, we knew what to use if we weren’t feeling well and what plants we could eat. If this field was my yard, I would have a bountiful supply of Chickweed and Dandelion greens to eat, Dandelion roots to make a deeply nourishing tea, Dandelion flowers that are edible but also make a lovely oil infusion with Chickweed for cuts and scrapes, Spruce needles and resin for coughs and many other plants in there such as Plantain and Shepherd’s Purse. All of this easily replaces supplements and expensive health foods (the best kept secret is that the healthiest foods are free). Took me a few days to sort through everything I picked in my bag… helping a neighbor friend pick “weeds” from his yard garden as a safe way of foraging nutritional plants free from dog pee and chemicals! This neighbor friend also graciously allowed me to grab some intentionally-planted culinary herbs, such as sage (his had actual blossoms on it… I had never seen a sage bloom before!) and rosemary and oregano and lovage (though he disagreed with me on the identification… He thought it was celeriac!) I got a fair amount of dead nettle, a.k.a. purple nettle, dandelion (greens and roots), and a burdock root/greens. Update on my burdock greens kimchi from last week: it’s OK as long as I mix it with a heavy amount of other vegetables. It’s still SUPER bitter. Not for sensitive palates! A new-to-me identification from the yard foraging: chickweed, which is supposed to have a mild spinach flavor! And I did grab a few stinging nettle tops. I do think that both kinds of nettle are past their prime at the moment (a lot of his were starting to turn yellow, but I’ve seen patches elsewhere that are still fiercely green)… The next optimal time to find and pick nettles will be in the fall when they’ve had a chance for a second growth for the year. #ironshawna #foraging #yardwork #weeds #deadnettle #purplenettle #sage #rosemary #oregano #lovage #dandelions #burdock #stingingnettle #chickweed

Spiced roast carrot, chickpea and chickweed salad with a sorrel and tahini sauce 🌿 A really simple but delicious recipe with some wild additions. Roast the carrots and chickpeas with cumin, ground coriander, paprika, S&P + a cheeky drizzle of maple syrup 😘 Once cooled add your chickweed and another wild herbs, ground elder would work well. For the tahini and sorrel sauce, I finely chopped the sorrel and combined with tahini, garlic and a good olive oil. The sorrel gives it a gorgeous citrus tang. The starwort (chickweed/Stellaria media) was the first to sprout this spring and has now fully overtaken its container. This prolific little plant has been used in poppet magic to represent fertility, probably because of its prodigious production of seeds and how easily it spreads. (It makes an excellent ground-cover and can produce seeds in less than two months.) In Scotland, people drank starwort tea for insomnia, a typical use of a Moon plant, and it is a member of the carnation family, which provides herbs used for dream divination in various cultures. As starwort grows and spreads, it flops over the ground. This trait is often seen as a weakness, but Stellaria media is one of the most widespread and persistent plants in the world—sometimes what appears to be passivity is anything but. It also has connections to bird magic. According to Gerard, chickweed was traditionally fed to caged birds when they seemed off. In Tuscany, people feed this plant to their chickens to improve their egg-laying. Goldfinches, house finches, and various sorts of sparrows enjoy eating the tiny seeds, and gamebirds eat the leaves themselves. Humans can also consume this wonderful plant, which is high in vitamins and minerals with various health benefits (and it's non-toxic to cats). The greens can be added to salad, sauteed, tinctured, or steeped into tea, and it makes a good poultice for treating skin irritations like eczema and psoriasis. We like to use fresh starwort as offerings in our shrines, particularly shrines to protectors. When placed in water, the tiny flowers and bright greens remain fresh and perky for a long time. There you are: -spring greens in various proportions (I’ve used #wildgarlic #dandelion #chickweed #nettle #mugwort #lemonbalm and #oregano -about 10-20% nuts by volume -loads of olive oil -hard cheese such as #parmesan but good cheddar will do -lemon juice, add some for flavour and to axidify slightly for longer shelf life -salt to taste 🌀 whizz everything together until desired consistency is achieved. Smooth or with bits, that’s up to you. Now sample and adjust to suit your tastebuds. Store in the jars, in the fridge and eat as soon as you can. If you intend to store it for a few months, please freeze or follow guidance and precautions to minimise the chances of botulism poisoning. In about a month the cover crop will have dried up into a mulch or #livingmulch (there’s both, I pulled anything big and in my way but left others), and you’ll only see the big hydrated ( #irrigationfree) crops. ❀ Stellaria media, chickweed ❀ Stellaria media is probably my favorite springtime wild edible green. It is a deeply nourishing food & medicine, adored by countless generations before us. It is a superb lymphatic mover, a testament to Mama Nature’s divine timing in offering just what we need at just the right time. After heavy winter meals often lacking in fresh-from-the-Earth nutrients, & our typically more slow, stagnant lifestyles, Stellaria is a most welcome mover of the body’s fluids & soul’s energy, preparing us for the upsurging season of regrowth, creative energy, & inspiring movement. ❀ Stellaria media is a mat-forming, self-sowing annual ground cover. It blooms from early to mid spring, often returning in autumn, with teeny white flowers at the ends of the stems. The flowers appear to have 10 petals, but are really 5-petals that are deeply divided. The leaves are opposite, toothless & stalkless. The stems can be erect though typically sprawl along the ground, rooting at nodes. ❀ I find chickweed tastiest eaten fresh in salads & sandwiches, though it can also be cooked as any other vegetable in various dishes. It is also made into a lovely green-fresh tea, from the fresh or dried whole plant. Chickweed is rich in antioxidants, saponins, vitamins A, C & B, as well as calcium, fiber & protein. ❀ Medicinally, Stellaria media is worked with as poultices, oils & salves to help with itchy skin irritations including rashes & eczema. It is also made into a tincture from the whole, fresh plant. It cools inflammations both internally & externally. ❀ Stellaria poultice is also wonderful for eye health with its cooling & moistening properties which can soothe discomfort, dryness, styes, & allergy irritations, another testament to Mama Nature’s divine timing in providing what we need. ❀ **Before ingesting any plant or mushroom, always do your own research and be 100% sure of identification.
