In the past I have tried over the counter medications from both the chemist & health food shops, but what works brilliantly for me is my Nettle Tincture. 👉3 things to consider next time you have grandios ideas of a big garden. #1 - Do I really have the time right now with my current situation to spend in a garden weeding? #2 - If I'm wanting to garden organically, do I have the needed products to make my own pest deterrent. If not, can I purchase them easily and/or make them myself? #3 - Do I have the time to process all the food that will come from my garden, friends I can share with that are willing to come pick their own, or will it go to waste before I have time to deal with it? All of these things I had to take into consideration for this current year. My heart wanted to plan and do the big garden, but I took an honest look at what I already had on my plate this season and decided, potted vegetables or raised beds was going to work best for me. I am surrounded by small farmers that have plenty veggies for me to get when I need if I don't have enough for the week. Next year I hope to be more organized and have a plan. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is one of my favorite herbs to grow and add to my apothecary. 🌱🧙♀️ It has a beautiful yellow orange flower, is compact enough to tuck into a veggie garden, and has a ton of beneficial properties. It’s been used historically to treat minor burns, wounds, and skin problems; has anti-fungal, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and even immune boosting properties. When I first saw the proper design of the book on the screen I felt really emotional. It was so lovely to see my vision very nearly ready to become physically manifested, all thanks to my amazing design and editing team from @aeonbooks_publishing. Creating this book took me nearly three years of juggling writing with my continued full time clinical practice. It’s been such a huge chunk of my life and energy but, now that I’ve recovered, I’m so, so happy that lots of you have told me that you love it. It feels as though it was worth the gargantuan effort! If you haven’t seen the book yet, I should explain that, in it, I share the qualities and medicinal virtues of 108 of the herbs that I work with in my dispensary. I write about each herb as an individual that I know and respect, rather than just a list of conditions that it treats or the constituents that it contains. I include physiological actions, emotional resonances and energetic qualities according to Tibetan medicine. I also add historical viewpoints, magical associations and plenty of suggested recipes for the home apothecary. I really want to share my way of working with herbs and my emphasis on treating patients with dietary and lifestyle factors alongside herbal prescriptions. I illustrate this with many informal anonymised case studies throughout the book. I believe that there’s a very special alchemy that happens when herbs are matched to the individual patient and prescribed truly holistically. In yesterday’s post I was talking about making sure that herbs are prescribed within a holistic framework so that they aren’t wasted. This is a subject that I’m very passionate about! Getting back into the groove of things: made herbal vitamin oxymel for the kids to enjoy. I had made another batch a few months back and it's been an absolute hit! I happily replenished our mullein supply last week. It’s our most used wild herb during the Winter months for cough & colds. I had a very bad dry cough for a few months & just could not get rid of it. Mullein is a wonderful expectorant, but since this cough was dry & completely unproductive I didn’t think I needed mullein, but after a few months I decided to just make some mullein tea anyway. About 6 hours after drinking the tea I was coughing up mucus that the mullein had loosened from deep inside my chest! I’ve been on the mend since then & continue with mullein tea often. I only drink it in the daytime though, because it is pretty much clockwork to 6 hours later that it starts working to expel the mucus & id rather not be hacking it up in the middle of the night 😂. I have a friend whose daughter has asthma issues & she burns some dried mullein in a little dish & lets her girls inhale the smoke. This is the fastest way to get some immediate relief directly into your lungs. Mullein is a must have herb in our little home apothecary! 🍃 ⚠️Use with precaution. One of the oldest recipes from Egypt, the recipe was recorded on the walls of the laboratory room of the Temple complex at Edfu & Dendera on the West Bank of the Nile in upper Egypt. The details were found in a document dated 1500BC, known as the Ebers Papyrus. This recipe contain anywhere from 12 to 50 ingredients, carefully crafted in a process of blending & aging, in a specific order, over 16 days. Developing this incense was a long dedicated time of prayer, poems, intention, honouring & sacredness - being used to purify the Temples and as an offering to the Goddesses & Gods It was also burned in the evenings as preparation for the dreamworld/dreamwork. It is considered the first perfume made by humans. The blend created at Clove contains 17 different ingredients, from botanicals to resins. It was certainly an interesting process. Far from being just a 'smell', incense, and I feel perfumes, had markedly different reasons for being developed alongside the fragrance. It was more than just 'smelling nice', they held stories & connections to people and places, the dream-space and our waking life. They were wholistic in their offering. The fragrance of Kyphi is quite rich & strong and it really has the feel of something you would burn in a sacred space, intimate gatherings, meditation & prayer times or therapy sessions.
