I'm not sure what or how it happened but at @tobygardenfest I bought plants that were actually on The List. 😱 I've been after the red dead nettle for over a year & failed to pick one up at the same show last year. Big mistake. Huge. The Gilena was added barely 2 weeks ago. Result! There are fields and fields of dead-nettle this time of year. I am often very tired but seeing the purple hued fields is instant rest. A long exhale of the spirit. Evening light is beautiful and the shadows are soft. I sit and feel seen and accepted here. I am who I am with no shame in the scars. I can move slowly or not at all with the weight of grief and what I can do is enough. In a few minutes I can get up and take a few more steps. It has been almost three months since Austin left us. I want to plant a tree for him within the next few weeks. I have been looking at local trees and weighing the pros and cons of each. 🌞This is yellow archangel (Lamium galeobdolon), also known as yellow/golden dead-nettle. If you know white dead-nettle (Lamium album), you’ll see how similar the two are. I’ve found it mainly in woodlands or just on the outskirts. This time of year it contrasts beautifully with bluebells, wood anemone and red campion. Being a “dead-nettle”, it doesn’t sting! 🌞Leaves and young shoots can be eaten once cooked, but as always do make sure you’re 100% certain what you’re picking. This is a plant that has some traditional use in herbal medicine, for bladder and urinary problems; and also as a drawing poultice for splinters and boils. Took me a few days to sort through everything I picked in my bag… helping a neighbor friend pick “weeds” from his yard garden as a safe way of foraging nutritional plants free from dog pee and chemicals! This neighbor friend also graciously allowed me to grab some intentionally-planted culinary herbs, such as sage (his had actual blossoms on it… I had never seen a sage bloom before!) and rosemary and oregano and lovage (though he disagreed with me on the identification… He thought it was celeriac!) I got a fair amount of dead nettle, a.k.a. purple nettle, dandelion (greens and roots), and a burdock root/greens. Update on my burdock greens kimchi from last week: it’s OK as long as I mix it with a heavy amount of other vegetables. It’s still SUPER bitter. Not for sensitive palates! A new-to-me identification from the yard foraging: chickweed, which is supposed to have a mild spinach flavor! And I did grab a few stinging nettle tops. This is purple dead nettle. I was thrilled to find it because I’ve only ever found henbit nettles in my area, and this was a whole field of them. While they share a similar name and appearance, dead nettle and henbit nettle are not actually related to the common stinging nettle. They are in two different families. In fact, dead and henbit nettles are part of the mint family. This means they won’t sting when you touch them. Also, one of my favorite facts about plants in the mint family is that they have a characteristic square stem. You can notice this easily if you try to roll the stem between your fingers. Dead and henbit nettles can be eaten like spinach or other leafy herbs. Døvnælde Today, I saw some of the first newly sprouted white dead-nettles (Lamium album). As a child, it was one of my favourite wild flowers because, unlike the stinging nettle, it doesn't sting. Moreover, the juice from the inner part of the flower tastes like honey! In Danish, it is called "døv-nælde," where "døv" means deaf. Weeds in full bloom in our garden. This weed is called purple dead nettle. Pretty but annoying to us farmers, though bees love them. It belongs to the mint family. Apparently it has a mild sweet peppery taste and is rich in vitamins, can be eaten as a salad, stir-fried, or made into a smoothie. I still have to taste it. The beautiful White Dead Nettle looking furry and fabulous along the shore at Lytham today. A distillation of the flowers is reputed “to make the heart merry, to make a good colour in the face, and to make the vital spirits more fresh and lively.” Just what I need at the moment! Superficially similar to the stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) but the leaves do not sting, hence the common name “dead-nettle”. The flowers are white, produced in whorls (‘verticillasters’) on the upper part of the stem.
