🎶“Don’t be a litterbug!”🎶 Andrew and I started a new daily routine this week. When we take Sully for his afternoon walks, we are now armed—with a trash pickup stick, collection bag, and rubber glove! It’s amazing how much garbage we’ve picked up in our neighborhood already, after just 3️⃣ days! As embarrassed as I am to admit it, there have been so many times—too many times—that I’ve heard myself complain aloud, “I wish I had a bag or glove right now because that’s disgusting and awful.” Enough was enough. I’m done complaining and I’m ready to put in the work to make a change. To help our planet. To beautify the place where we live. To protect the integrity of the place we call home. To look out for all of the innocent wildlife in our area that could be hurt by litter. If everyone would at least care for their own property and the area around it, litter would never be an issue in neighborhoods…and if everyone would simply pick up whatever trash they come upon in their daily life, the earth would be so much cleaner and healthier for it. 🌎 Growing up on Long Island (with a Mom who loves the beach, open water, swimming, & nature), we spent a huge chunk of our childhood at the beach…and we were never without bags to collect litter! We’d set aside at least a little time during each visit to search for trash to pick up, with just as much enthusiasm as when we’d search for crabs or shells…and it always felt so good to toss our findings into the garbage can before heading home, knowing that all we’d gathered would not end up in the water or a seagull’s mouth. ❤️🩹 What do you want to do this Spring or this year to make a positive impact in your world? What new routine would you like to implement in your day-to-day to address something that doesn’t match your soul energy? 🌎For my @HearOurVoicesTours stop of Troubled Waters by Mary Annaïse Heglar @Mary.Heglar, I’m reflecting on what this book means to me. Let me just first point out that on the eve of her debut’s publication, a childhood dream realized, the author took a moment to acknowledge the children of Rafah who will never be able to realize theirs. I can’t express what it meant to see that post, how it rendered me incapable of completing my reflection to my satisfaction. I’ve revised this so many times, I don’t think I’ll ever be 100% happy with it but here goes… 🌍It’s about time! It’s about time we have a book by an author of color that includes climate change among its major intersectional themes. For me reading diversely isn’t just about consuming material written by a wide range of marginalized authors, but also content that lives among varied intersections shattering monolithic representations. This title checked off those boxes for me. 🌏A character driven historical fiction, Heglar doesn’t offer long term solutions to climate change. And it’s not fair to expect her to do so. Instead, she paints a portrait of how it affects the Sterlings, a Black family, their community, their daily existence. Heglar is showing us how everything is connected, how people of color are disproportionately affected by the government’s environmental neglect, how our relationship with the land is deeper than the ingredients we need for our cultural dishes, and how we have to take matters into our own hands when our government doesn’t care about anything but oil, money, and power so it can maintain oppressive systems and capitalist cycles that protect the wealthy few. ♻️Honestly, I have so much more of my reflection to share, but I need it to unfold organically, and when it’s done, I’ll post again, because this book lives in my heart now. Rainy day Sunday was perfect for seed starting! A bit late but done! Cherry tomatoes (from plants over the years), Roma tomatoes (from a plant last year), green and golden bush beans. Plus a Nasturtium annual I found seeds for (flowers edible) and a native grass species to try. I’ve learned that trying native grasses in the garden is really tough unless they have unique seedlings as they all just look like grass! Haha! So if they take, I can transplant in a more organized fashion. The kitchen is busy! They are next to the sweet red pepper plant I’ve overwintered - with the tiniest peppers! And an annual New Guinea Impatiens with the most beautiful coloured blooms - in its third or fourth season! We’ve lost track! It apparently didn’t get the “annual” memo 😉 Other plants have been moved around the house getting ready to head outside soon to acclimatize and then enjoy their outdoor spring / summer life. Do you start seeds inside? I’d love to know! And yes, I am looking at the pots everyday even though I know they won’t pop up just yet! The magic of new life! The splashing noise of a white-water stream increased until Abby expected the rapids to cross their path any minute. Coming to a very narrow opening, the noise became a crashing din. They stepped carefully through a round hole with the wind whipping them from behind. Suddenly the path became a wide ledge on the shore of a roaring, echoing stream that entered their tunnel and poured down swift and boiling rapids. The glow of The Mapstick sparkled as if the water itself gave off a silver blue glow. STED is happy to share our annual Door Decorating contest among Soboba Tribal Admin, to bring a close to our Earth Day festivities. This year’s theme was Planet vs Plastic! The goal of the Door Decorating contest is to bring awareness to environmental issues, while encouraging teamwork and creativity. Each year, Tribal Council makes the final decision as to who the winners are. This year, 🥇first place went to Facilities, who brought attention to the negative effects of waste, specifically plastics, on our oceans. They used a multitude of recycled material, including an Octopus 🐙 with arms made completely of Starbucks cups! 🥈Second place went to Cultural, who paid specific attention to detail while using repurposed, recycled ♻️and upscaled materials to construct their master piece in an attempt to emphasize the importance of saving what we have left. Their beautiful door offered a glimpse at the different plant and animal species on the Soboba Reservation. 🥉Third place went to the Soboba Tribal Preschool who also went under the sea with their decorations, incorporating a variety of plastic materials and the adorable faces of their students, as fish 🐠 , jellyfish, and sea turtles 🐢 ! Their submission also included a beautiful poem written by one of their teachers, which we included below. =] Way down under in the deep blue sea Lived creatures of the ocean living happily and free Until one day something new came to be Plastic appeared in their homes and their reefs The trash from the land began to spill Nobody recycled and the sea paid the bill Little did they know it was harming us still Plastic materials became animals’ meals So remember to recycle as much as you can Keep our homes clean –both water and land We are growing children who need your hand To strengthen and lengthen our planet’s life span Tribal Admin departments submitted some very creative decorations! Scenes from yesterday's Riversweep outside Inwood Hill Nature Center and Muscota Marsh. Happy volunteers, lead by longtime leaders Kirsten & Leslie, cleaned up the shoreline of Northern Inwood Hill Park, collecting litter, including a number of baseballs, endless bottle caps, a rotted grill, and plastic confetti, to name just a few things. They also filled and recycled several bags worth of recyclable plastic, splitting them up between volunteers to take home. (NYC Parks does not recycle, so items need to be placed in residential recycling). The cleanup covered a vast area, with the tide relatively low, and litter was pulled from under slippery and jagged shoreline rocks and in between the dense foliage of the wetland areas. Thank you, all, for one of the best cleanup days yet, because of our robust number of volunteers!
