My little friend sits here in the same spot on the cannas every single day, giving me the opportunity to watch them grow bigger and bigger as the weeks go by. This kind of thing is such a huge part of why I garden. The relationships I get to build throughout the year keep me rooted to this place in such a comforting way.
I couldn't get the string trellising set up for my tomatoes today. The latest round of storms had taken one plant down already so I went to plan B. I caged the biggest plants. I'm not a big fan of cages so hopefully they'll be temporary. I'm pretty excited that these tomatoes are looking so good. The storm damaged plant was my biggest. I think it's going to be fine. It didn't snap it just bent over. Haferwurz. Ich habe das Wurzelgemüse ursprünglich wegen seiner schönen Blüten und Samenstände angebaut, die Wurzeln sind aber auch sehr lecker. Man kann sie ähnlich wie Schwarzwurzeln zubereiten. Ich habe sie etwas früh ausgegraben, die Wurzeln werden eigentlich noch etwas größer. Das tolle an Haferwurz ist, dass sich das alte Wurzelgemüse Jahr für Jahr selber aussät und über den Garten verteilt wächst. This afternoon's garden harvest: Basket 1 -- lettuce (Black-Seeded Simpson loose-leaf & Forellenschluss / Spotted Trout romaine). Basket 2 -- peas (Grandma Hershey's Sugar shelling, Golden Sweet & Mammoth Melting Sugar snow); radishes (French Breakfast); turnips (Purple Top White Globe). Basket 3 -- spinach (Bloomsdale & Amsterdam Prickly Seeded); mustard (Japanese Giant Red); peppermint. All are heirloom varieties. Prickly Seeded spinach was grown by Thomas Jefferson in his Monticello gardens. It’s better to plant tomatoes ‘the wrong way’ or at ‘the wrong time’ than to not plant tomatoes at all because you are paralyzed by overwhelming and conflicting internet (social media) information. Ironically, I’m telling you this on social media 🤪 JUST PLANT THOSE TOMATOES! There. I said it. 😬 Okay, okay, okay. So there ARE helpful tips to follow. But I mean it, the best thing you can do is just grow the tomatoes. You will then learn what works or doesn’t work for you and your garden by just growing. Here’s what I’m doing: I’m planting my tomatoes this weekend (May 24-27). They have been hardened off (exposed to sun, wind, rain, etc.) in preparation for their new life stage in the garden. But to give them the best start possible I will plant in the evening or a cool cloudy day, not in the heat of the day. I plant them in soil that has had lots of compost added. I plant them deep, but only up to about the first set of true leaves. The last thing I do is water them in (unless it’s raining at the time). Happy tomato growing!!

I also am going to give some Dakota Black Popcorn a shot this week… it might be too late for corn but we’re gonna give it a go anyway. I love this season… it’s so much work but so much fun. I really couldn’t do it without CJ though… he designed the whole garden, tilled the beds, and helped me plant and mulch. He’s the best ever and goes along with all this craziness each year! Every year I like to experiment with a crop I’ve never grown before. I’m slowly running out of options, but I’ve never grown a grain other than maize before. So I’m trying hulless barley. It’s coming in very nice, but probably later than ideal, but hey it’s an experiment! This is Purple Karma hulless barley from @southernexposureseed . It doesn’t need extensive threshing to remove the hull as from standard barley. I’ll report back as the season progresses for those who are interested.
With the danger of frost happily behind us, these beauties were planted today today underneath the already huge Hopi Black Dye Sunflowers. If you've saved seed from last year, remember to plant the ones that are from pods that are 4 to 5 beans long, Throw the double and triple pod beans into your soup pot. 🫘 🍲 This ensures long plump seed pods for summer harvesting! The Tiger's Eye can also be eaten young as a tender green bean. Today was a full and productive garden day. I watered the plants in the greenhouse first. I'm still holding on to hope of getting a cabbage, but it may just be too warm in there. Then, I mixed up fish fertilizer for the garden. While I was working on that, Cody cut a tree limb that had fallen on our new garden fence in the last big storm. Luckily there wasn't any damage. Finally, we put in a few posts and strung some leftover fence for a tomato trellis. Of course we ran out of fence, but we got most of the almost 80 tomatoes trellised. AND the highlight of the day was finding another tomato baby. Foote Street is going to get resurfaced soon, and part of that involves the removal of my retaining wall, which is where I have been growing #spiderlillies for the past 8 or so years. Rather than letting them get destroyed, I spent a few hours this afternoon digging them all up, and now I have like 100lbs of them in this plastic tub. Took advantage of the perfect weather to do more gardening than gunsmithing this weekend and made up some trellises! I like this tomato "cage" because they sprawl over the woven bamboo mat and then fruit hang down below for easy picking. Rounded out with a vertical cucumber trellis and some bamboo tripods (not pictured) for pole beans. The wood garden stakes and bamboo poles last about 3 seasons before really breaking down too much to be useful. Until that point these structures are very strong! Oh also harvested some new potatoes for German meal night. We weeded and cleaned up our onion bed today. We also spooned them so the bulbs are on top of the soil like @ruthannzimm does! Can’t wait to harvest and store these. Worshipped this beautiful spring Sunday in my cathedral of choice -- my gardens. "One is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on worth." First, I harvested various spring vegetables -- arugula; multi-colored carrots; 3 varieties of mustard/mizuna; Spotted Trout & Rouge d'Hiver romaine lettuce; 2 varieties of radishes -- as well as more fresh mint. Next, I began my planting of seeds for vegetables that I do not start indoors in advance -- 7 varieties of beans (Dragon Tongue, Gold Rush Wax, & Landreth Stringless bush; Blue Lake & Old Homestead pole; Chinese Red Noodle & Orient Wonder long -- and 2 varieties of summer squash (Black Beauty Zucchini & Early Prolific Straightneck). I still need to plant my winter squash, corn, and cucumber seeds.
