Half an hour to spare before my self imposed deadline and I think I can say “crops in the ground” has been achieved! Today I added Brussels sprouts, cabbages and sweet peas to the mix. There were supposed to be actual peas direct sown too but someone forgot to bring the peas to the plot. 🙄 I’m rather proud of my repurposed hammock stand brassica cage. It can no longer support a hammock but it’s perfect for this job! I also took some dahlia cuttings, fingers crossed these come on better than last year’s effort! The rain hasn’t really let up today, threatening at 15 minute intervals but I’m proud of myself for having got the plot looking habitable again. I think I can safely assume the garlic crop has failed. I lifted a couple of test bulbs, the cloves have formed but are tiny, and the stems are beginning to rot. In 30+ years I've never known it this bad. Rust is not unusual, but in cold wet weather? We are always taught that rust thrives in hot dry conditions. Has it been dry? Nope! In reality it has been raining here consistently since last August. And did I mention the slugs? Garlic wash as a slug deterrent? Tada! Crops in the ground 24 hours ahead of schedule! I got the onions, lettuce, chard and beans in to join the pots of potatoes and just like that the big plot is in production once again! I also built an archway (for sweet-peas, climbing beans or pumpkins, who can say!), did more slate bed edging and wrote up the dahlia labels before those went astray. There were some interesting interpretations of my scribbled labels from when they went in storage. I’ve decided it was probably “Soulman” not “Sulimar”. I wish when I bought dahlia collections from SR they included the names of what’s in the collection in the email they send you because two years on it’s impossible to figure out what was in which selection. Still lots to do but at least something is in the dirt (3 months late or not!) Cabin fever is a real thing! Inbetween the rain showers and thunderstorms I’ve been popping out to the garden and greenhouse. I still haven’t properly packed for my holiday tomorrow. Anyone who knows me knows that my suitcase is normally ready a week before. I have however sent videos to my mum on what needs watering etc as she is housesitting for us. She’s having a mini holiday from my dad 🤣 I had three runner bean plants left over and rather than them go to waste I’ve popped them in a pot and put them in an area of the garden that I may trial as a mini veg growing space. The pot is too small and they will be cramped but I know I’ll harvest something from them. These are my spring onions and I've finally got them in the ground🌱🧅 now to hope they survive and aren't eaten by the animals🐌 Today's been all about tidying the garden and getting things sorted ahead of the long weekend🌱 I'm away with my family so the garden and all the plants etc are going to have to fend for themselves😬 I managed to pot on my final batches of seedlings from a tray into their own cells, and given them a good watering. Last exam done today for year 2 of Uni and now I’m freeeee … to pick up more work hours over the summer 🤣 but also to play catch up with the garden! I’ve got half a ton of topsoil to move from the drive and a compost bin to empty into the raised beds but putting them together was the fiddly bit and hundreds of bolts later I’m so pleased they’re done. We moved the garden stove out of the way and a little pile of very dusty newts fell out with the ashes, so they were carefully rehomed along with a little slow worm into the wild area. LOADS of stuff still to do, but it’s starting to feel like a growing space now and somewhere I can escape the house renovations 🤣 ❤️ Watch this space!

Lovely first crop of spinach from the plot….and each day a few asparagus spears from self seeded plants. Will make a green risotto….. I am pleased to say I have managed to control the slugs this year so far… mostly picking them off and dispatching them into a bucket of water and fairy liquid. I’m absolutely obsessed with @charles_dowding’s No Dig book right now! 🌱👩🏻🌾 One challenge I’ve always faced with no dig gardening is making enough compost to cover vmy entire plot. But, inspired by his amazing book, I decided to take action and built a brand-new set of compost bays using old pallets. The first spinach harvest of the year. Some of the leaves have been a little nibbled by the slugs but this doesn't affect the taste, I just gave them a good wash. 🍋 Lemon and pistachio pasta 🍋 Adding this recipe to the grid so I can try and make it again one day! Thank you to Alex and @4mcds_bloomingplot for the inspo 💚 Rough recipe: Fry half a red onion on a low heat, once it’s softened add garlic and chilli. After a minute add veg in your order of cooked preference - I added mushrooms, then a few minutes later very thinly sliced courgette, then some asparagus and the broad beans. The star of the show, preserved lemons and chopped pistachios were added once the asparagus had started to cook. a while later I added spinach, lettuce and chard to wilt. At this point I put the pasta on to boil. For the sauce, I added half a tub of crème fraîche and half a log of goat cheese to the veg and melted it together. I added a little water and let it bind together. When the pasta was cooked I mixed it all together and added a load of freshly cracked black pepper. At this point I microwaved some @the_pig_hotels local honey and drizzled it on top of the pasta when I served. Finally I added some more goat cheese because you always need more cheese. Yum. Yippedy doo dah the 1st official harvest of 2024 is in 🤩 Lollo Rosso lettuce which you can grow to harvest the whole head or remove outer leaves as a ‘cut and come’ variety and variegated sage which is so zingy in colour, I’ll dry the sage to blitz and jar for later use. And all popped into my new basket that zi picked up on a visit to Bakewell 🫶🏼 Have you grown this lettuce before? This is by far the best salad I’ve ever grown. Seeds sown in a little pot then pricked out into individual cells and grown on enough to withstand becoming an overnight snack for the slimy army before being planted out and spaced correctly in a row (yes I know who even am I 😂) and left to become a beautiful ruby red/green bushy edging to my veg bed path. This salad can be grown in containers or mixed in with flowering plants in a flower bed and wow it’s so tasty 😋 have a swipe ➡️ to see how zone preserved it to last several days. I’ve also a 2nd sowing plumping up that I’ll plant out over the next week and then I’ll continue to sow salad leaves every few weeks to have a continuous supply through Summer. There’s been lots of action down by the hens and orchard over the past few weeks! Plenty of herbs have been sown including fun basil varieties - thai, lemon, cinnamon and lime. The hens are getting fed copious amounts of yummy weeds which have multiplied in the tunnels over the past few weeks. Roxy has enjoyed overseeing the garlic bed weeding. Five different varieties of tomatoes have been planted with genovese basil between the stems on one side the top tunnel with courgettes, watermelon, cucumbers and butternut squash on the other side. Outdoors we planted sweetcorn, squash and beans using the three sisters method, commonly known as companion planting which entails growing corn, beans, and squash together in a mutually beneficial arrangement. It originated in North America around 3000 years ago. 'Irish Mammy Salad Season' is officially underway. We recommend 3 key base components to get started, then make it your own. 1. Jubilee Farm free-range pork. 2. Not an ideal time of the year to lift them but these crowns needed to be moved and were surplus to requirements. Lifted with soil around them and kept moist in the back of the Landy for now, they’ll be potted up in some large pots and in some nice, rich Somerset Levels compost whilst I sort out a bed.
