Take a walk with me through our woodland sanctuary in Westford Vermont to a special place we call the “cathedral”. This protected dale at the base of a cliff is home to a huge variety of these fleeting springtime plants like Spring Beauty, Trilliums, Blue Cohosh, so many different Hepatica, acres of thriving Ramps and many more! Learn how to identify these gorgeous plants, all about their growth cycles, how to protect them and of course some folklore, historical context and magical stories about them! Haven Shire is a @unitedplantsavers registered botanical sanctuary. . We got that status in 2021. We proudly hang that sign at the gate to the property. . Look at this beautiful Trillium growing here. . We did nothing but continue protecting the land from folks who wish to harm it. . Thankfully the property near us was sold to a man who put it in a trust for his grandchildren and his son is a hiker. No plans on building (there are also no utilities nor easements for them). . So this stand of Trillium will remain. . Next to a stand of May apples. . So when you support any of the work done at Haven Shire, like my herbal consults, you are also supporting our efforts to steward this land. . Cornus nuttallii Pacific Dogwood A beautiful native tree that grows in the shade of the forest. There is something about these tiny birds that make me want to illustrate them. I find them simply fascinating and so adorable! 🧡💙 I really enjoy illustrating birds and hummingbirds are one of my favourites. Now that spring is officially here, cue the baby plant pics! I'm happy to report that pretty much everything I planted last year survived the first winter in the new gardens, and most of the winter sown seeds are up! So much of what is happening in the world now is heavy, dark and horrific, and the actions I take to make change seem so small and insignificant. The Canopy Care project is in part a consolidation of the long standing work of current and previous members of Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary and Green Phoenix teams. Both teams are composed almost completely of people from the western Wayanad landscape, whose intergenerational deep forest knowledge and ecosystem gardening skills form the primary strength of the place. The dialogue and mutual education began 42 years ago, and need to be sustained into the future through the exchange of different skill sets, expertise, concern, and affection for this land. The Paniya community members bring a wealth of forest wisdom, particularly for plants, and their long relationship as forest dwellers to the ancient forest environment needs to be encouraged, supported and shared. The Kurchiya community are in part cultivators and in part hunters. Their knowledge of animals and birds will be essential to the canopy research and conservation. The settler-migrant farmers have gone through a full cycle. The lands clear-felled 50 or more years ago, are now clothed in trees again. They are skilled cultivators, adept with tubers, climbers, trees, shrubs and annuals. The Green Phoenix members cover a lot of ground, and are involved in community level issues affecting land use practices. An entrepreneurial sensibility born out of strong actions covering a range of issues, could create a whole new land care trajectory. We are a community who are keen to rewild our beloved biome. A new beginning. . . . We are happy to announce the beginnings of the Goa Botanical Sanctuary. A 150 hectare privately owned forest property in the heart of the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary in the North East of Goa. Over the past 18 months we have been working hard to embed ourselves into this stunning (but also somewhat degraded) farm and forest patch, observing patterns and beginning the long road to documenting the flora and fauna on the property and getting started on ecosystem restoration. With a focus on ecosystem restoration, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, research and education, we aim to help safeguard the flora of the Western Ghats and the fauna that relies on them. Over time we will be able to offer accommodation, nature trails and workshops, as well as a plant nursery that can allow anyone to introduce a slice of the wild into their own surroundings. As this journey unravels we will be posting updates here, providing you with an insight into the stunning floristic diversity both here in the Western Ghats and further afield.
