Dismas of Vermont is the proud recipient (the only one in the state!) of a $250,000 #HousingforEveryone grant awarded by @tdbank_us to help us extend the runway of success for those returning to our communities from incarceration through master leasing. With this generous grant, Dismas will lease apartments from local landlords and sublet them to our participants ready for more independent living. Dismas will continue to provide them with the support and programming we are known for so that they can thrive and build financial stability. About 30 people of various ages, races, and backgrounds representing Philadelphia organizations gathered in Chinatown last month to talk affordable housing. They discussed Philadelphia’s rising housing costs and the incomes that haven’t kept up. They practiced how to share their and their neighbors’ stories of struggling to afford homes. And they pledged to get as many people as they could to show up outside City Hall on Thursday. In April 2022, city officials gathered in West Philadelphia to announce a plan to build 1,000 homes for first-time buyers by giving away city-owned land to private developers and subsidizing mortgages. Turn the Key is part of City Council’s $400 million Neighborhood Preservation Initiative, a plan that includes building and preserving affordable housing and helping first-time home buyers in a city that has a tradition of home ownership but where rising costs are pushing the milestone out of reach for more Philadelphians. Owning property is how most households build wealth that can be passed down through generations. Turn the Key is open to Philadelphia buyers who have never purchased a home or have not owned one in the last three years.
