Mordechai Anielewicz (1919 - 8 May 1943) was the leader of the Jewish Fighting Organization (Polish: Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa, ŻOB) during the Warsaw Ghetto uprising; the largest Jewish resistance movement during the Second World War. Anielewicz inspired further rebellions in both ghettos and extermination camps with his leadership. His character was engraved as a symbol of courage and sacrifice, and was a major figure of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. He died on May 8, 1943 together with members of the ŻOB command in a bunker at ul. Miła 18. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown. There were about 120 insurgents in the bunker at that time, including his girlfriend Mira Fuchrer. Many of them, at the call of Arie Wilner, committed suicide. My friend and former program director passed away last weekend; he was only twelve years older than I am, and I wish his journey on earth had been longer. Through him I learned of the Jewish concept “tikkun olam”, which means “repairing the world”. As a childhood cancer survivor he lived nearly all of his life with complications of treatment, but I never once heard him complain. He lived each day as a gift to the people around him and encouraged the rest of us to do the same. Recently, he wrote an email sharing that his health was declining. He included a memory of when I had approached him as my boss, with trepidation, to share that I was unexpectedly pregnant one month into my Preventive Medicine Residency. Knowing my husband was also a childhood cancer survivor who was not expected to have children, he was overjoyed and jumped up to give me a huge hug. As I read the email in which he recalled this touching story and apologized if he had overstepped in that moment (he certainly hadn’t), I began bawling. I knew he was saying goodbye. He had lived with thoughtful intentionality and approached death similarly. Over the last decade, he made concerted efforts to meet up when we returned to the States and always brought a thoughtful gift: delicious local produce; delectable pastries; an incredible, tiny train set. He loved to make our kids laugh. He strove to improve public health and cancer survivorship as a physician and a member of society. He worked daily to redeem suffering in the world. He did this so well, and I know his memory will be a blessing to many. #tikkunolam #mayhismemorybeablessing #survivorship

On this day, 23rd of April 1720, Elijah ben Solomon Zalman was born in Sialiec in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (modern day Belarus). In time, he would come to be known as the Vilna Gaon - the great teacher of Vilnius. He was a Lithuanian Jewish Talmudist, halakhist, kabbalist, and the foremost leader of misnagdic (non-hasidic) Jewry of the past few centuries. When Hasidic Judaism became influential in his native town, the Vilna Gaon joined the “opposers” or Misnagdim, rabbis and heads of the Polish communities, to curb Hasidic influence. Large groups of people, including many yeshivas, uphold the set of Jewish customs and rites (minhag), the “minhag ha-Gra”, named after him. Ken Holtzman had a legendary career in professional baseball as the winningest Jewish pitcher in baseball history. His long list of achievements include two no-hitters and three World Series Championships. Holtzman was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1965. He went on to play for the Cubs for the first six years of his career before being traded to the Oakland Athletics, where he won three consecutive titles from 1972-1974. He also played for the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees before finishing his MLB career with the Cubs. He was a two-time All-Star. As a young Jewish left-handed pitcher breaking into the big leagues, Holtzman often drew comparisons to Los Angeles Dodgers great Sandy Koufax, perhaps the most famous Jewish MLB player. Holtzman retired after the 1979 season and earned a place in the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame. Martin Greenfield lived an extraordinary life, embodying what it means to overcome tragedy. As a teenager, he was a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp. After accidentally tearing an SS soldier's shirt while doing laundry, Greenfield was beaten. Shortly after, another prisoner taught him how to sew a simple stitch. “Of course, receiving your first tailoring lesson inside a Nazi concentration camp was hardly the ideal apprenticeship,” he said. After fixing the soldier’s shirt, Greenfield developed a new understanding of how clothes could make people feel. “Clothes don’t just ‘make the man,’ they can save the man. They did for me,” wrote Greenfield in his memoir, "Measure of a Man." Greenfield earned a reputation as one of the best men’s tailors in the United States. Today the world lost an amazing human, Martin Greenfield was a Holocaust survivor who lifted himself from the depths of hell to build a beautiful family and company that influenced the world in positive ways. #Repost @humansofjudaism Benjamin Ferencz was born on March 11, 1920, to a Jewish family in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania. He was only 10 months old when his family moved to the US & settled in the Lower East Side. In 1943, Ferencz graduated from #Harvard Law School & enlisted in the U.S. #Army as America was preparing to invade #France. He served under General Patton & was awarded 5 battle stars. Towards the end of #WWII, Ferencz was appointed as a #warcrimes investigator in the newly established War Crimes Branch of the U.S. Army. He gathered proof of #Nazi brutality to convict individuals of international war crimes. Ferencz was a 1st-hand witness of the atrocities committed by the Nazis and was among the U.S. forces that liberated several #concentrationcamps. When asked about what he had witnessed, Ferencz said, “My mind would not accept what my eyes saw. … I had peered into hell.” By the end of 1945, Ferencz returned to #NewYork & was soon recruited by the U.S. Government to join the team for the #NurembergTrials. At just 27 years old, Ferencz was appointed Chief Prosecutor in the Einsatzgruppen Trial, which is considered the biggest #murder trial in history. Ferencz and his team were responsible for the convictions of 22 Nazi death squad commanders, guilty of genocidal war crimes & crimes against humanity & were charged with the murder of over 1 million people. It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of Ken Libertoff, whose memoir “Snapshots of a Life” released just 8 weeks ago to a wonderful reception with friends and family. His book even made the bestseller list at Bear Pond Books! Ken died peacefully at home yesterday morning, and our heart goes out to his wife Sarah and all his family. He was a larger than life kind of guy, and not just because of his stature at well over six feet tall! But his heart and laugh and generosity was large as well, and it’s clear he touched many lives. We are so grateful to have known him; it was an honor to publish his story. As Ken wrote in the Author’s Note: “I am humbled with gratitude and honored to learn that everyone has a valued story to tell. Remembering Or Eshkar 🕯️ A year has passed since the tragic loss of Or Eshkar on March 9th, 2023, in a terrorist attack on Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Street. Born in Jerusalem on August 15, 1990, Or’s life was a testament to resilience and passion. A former competitive swimmer, Givati Brigade soldier, and a graduate in business administration, Or’s spirit for adventure led him to marathons and Ironman competitions worldwide 🌍. Or Eshkar’s life ended tragically when terrorist Mutaz Khawaja, from Nilin, targeted him and his friends on their way to a wedding. Despite a brave 12-day fight with severe injuries at Ichilov Hospital, Or passed away. His final act of kindness, the donation of his organs, continued to save lives. ❤️ Or was more than his accomplishments; he was a beacon of joy, inspiring all who knew him with his warmth, kindness, and zest for life. Dorene Shapiro, long time CAI congregant, died on February 27, 2024 in Boca Raton, Florida at the age of 93. She and her husband, Ronald Shapiro, who predeceased her, were active synagogue members and volunteered tirelessly for UJA, Hadassah and other Jewish organizations in the U.S. and in Israel. Dorene and Ronald made Aliya to Israel in 1982, fulfilling Dorene’s lifetime dream. After 23 years living and working in Jerusalem, they moved to Florida to be closer to family. She is survived by her three children Gary Shapiro (Pat Walker), Marc Shapiro (Tina Valverde), and Shari Shapiro Harris (Ron Harris); grandchildren Ryan, Rachel, Adam, Robin, Jessica and Emma; and great grandchildren, Lucy, Emmy, Eve, Talia, Naomi, Mason, and Zoe. The funeral will be held on Friday, March 1 at 10:30am at Congregation Agudas Israel, 290 North Street in Newburgh, NY. Rocznica Urodzin Maurycego Gottlieba (Mojżesza Gottlieba) 168th Birthday Anniversary of Maurycy Gottlieb 21.02.1865 - 17.07.1879 #mayhismemorybeablessing ________________________________ During his studies in Kraków, he created paintings on historical themes, e.g. Kościuszko's oath in Kraków, Livonian Knights asking for the protection of Sigismund August against Emperor Ferdinand, Albrecht of Brandenburg receiving the investiture from King Zygmunt the Old, A scene from the life of Dmitri the False, also a self-portrait dressed as a Polish nobleman. Later, he mainly painted works related to Jewish culture and tradition; Shylock and Jessyka (1877), exhibited at the Industrial School in Lviv, and then in Warsaw, were highly valued, as were Jews praying in the synagogue during Yom Kippur. In addition, Gottlieb created numerous types of portraits (self-portrait of Ahasverus, a Jew in Arab costume, the head of an old woman in a bonnet, a drunkard, and others), and, commissioned by a Viennese publisher, he illustrated the lives of Nathan the Wise and Uriel Acosta, and the book of Ruth. In the last period of his life, Gottlieb worked mainly on paintings, which were the implementation of his new mission - Polish-Jewish reconciliation through painting. They were both religious works (Christ teaching in Capernaum, Christ in the Temple) and historical-literary works (Kazimierz the Great giving rights to Jews, Jankiel the cymbalist and Zosia). We are shocked and saddened with the terrible news that my dad Marc Meyer has passed away suddenly. He was a wonderful Husband, Dad and Papa to 5 grandchildren, Brother and Uncle. He will be missed beyond words. He served the country in the Navy in Vietnam and as a medic corpsman. Then he started an amazing 40 year career as a Respiratory Therapist and as a volunteer fireman and EMT in Holbrook and East Rockaway, Long Island. We always called the 4 of us the "original peaches." So how sweet it was we have this picture from August of us together. Rabbi Herbert Bronstein ZT”L, who we lost a few days ago, was my long-time mentor starting from when I was a student at Lake Forest College in the late 1990s. I had taken one of his religion classes and was so profoundly affected by the experience and our discussions during office hours that I continued to study with him – initially at school, and then after graduating, independently one-on-one as we dove ever deeper into spirituality, humanity, and the modern world. I am who I am intellectually, spiritually, and ethically because of his profound influence. I have always kept the books that he gave me prominently displayed in my bookcase, so that I see them and am reminded of him and our studies every single day. He was equal parts learned scholar pushing me to wrestle with deep complexity and father figure demonstrating the integrity, dedication, and warmth needed to build a meaningful life. I owe my worldview, focused around the concept of Tikkun Olam, but also deeply informed by tradition and spirituality, to Rabbi Bronstein. I’m just a mess of jumbled thoughts and memories of the incredible, wonderful, generously giving man that was Camden Toy. He had a ready smile for everyone, and was always willing to share his wisdom with me if I asked him any questions. Plus, his hugs were on another level. Right now, what I’m remembering most is one particular occasion when, after a talk at MUD, he was telling me about his time as one of the Gentlemen on BTVS, then moved the conversation forward. A few minutes later, out of nowhere, he smiled normally at me, then turned it into his creepy gentlemen grin. I shrieked and bolted while he laughed. Such a small moment, but what a joy to have experienced that special moment. About yesterday: 119th Birthday Anniversary of Felix Nussbaum, a German-Jewish painter, who by his paintings, documented the years of the Holocaust 11.12.1904 - 02.08.1944 #mayhismemorybeablessing ✡️ ••••• •After the Nazis took power in 1933, Felix Nussbaum and Felka Płatek (wife) found asylum in Italy, then in France, and from 1937 in Brussels, where they got married, which was supposed to help legalize their stay in Belgium. Two days after the German troops entered, Nussbaum was arrested by the Belgian authorities and transferred to an internment camp in Saint-Cyprien (Orientales Pyrenees) in the south of France, from where he managed to escape. Returning to Brussels, he met his wife. They both hid with an art dealer they knew, but as a result of a denunciation they were arrested, imprisoned in the Mechelen camp, and then transported to the KL Birkenau (Auschwitz II) extermination camp, where they were murdered on August 2nd, 1944. •Felix Nussbaum painted pictures until the last days before his imprisonment, creating a chronicle of the Holocaust years.
