Congratulations to Marine Bayer and Sébastien Destremau of the French NGO @aidoceanorg for completing a 2-month vaccination drive for 1046 young children on remote islands surrounding New Ireland. The AIDOCEAN team included a doctor, nurses and was joined by local nurses to help vaccinate the children against life-threatening illnesses such as polio, measles, rubella and many more. The team were greatly welcomed by locals and also visited schools to donate books provided by Buk bilong Pikinini. Reaching schools on such remote islands is very rare, so we were only too happy to support this important mission. In order to reach the remote islands the team travelled with skipper Craig de Wit @craigdewit on The Golden Dawn. Buk bilong Pikinini is keen to support schools across Papua New Guinea with having well-stocked school and classroom libraries to assist with improving literacy and education outcomes. 💉 Hepatitis B vaccine 💉 Hepatitis B is a serious infectious disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It mainly affects the liver. It can pass from mother to baby through blood and body fluids during birth or shortly after. Babies under 12 months who catch Hepatitis B are more likely to develop chronic hepatitis B, which may lead to liver disease or liver cancer in adulthood. There is no cure for chronic Hepatitis B and it requires long term antiviral therapy. The first dose of this vaccine is preferably given with the first 24hrs of life, followed by three more doses at various times in the vaccine schedule. The first dose will normally be done by your midwives in hospital (if that is where you choose to birth). It is given as an injection into the baby’s thigh muscle 🦵 And yes, they do cry. But they also forget about it pretty quickly afterwards.
