The enormous diversity in plants along the coast of Sardinia. It reminded me of my time in Northern California. I guess it was a good time of year to visit, since the plants haven’t gone dormant yet because of the heat. Lots of planty snapshots from the show. Definitely much more of a lean to naturalistic planting on main avenue. Exploring the natural beauty of Sardinia! Last week I visited Northern Sardinia to learn more about its native planting and Mediterranean plant communities. The trip was organized by the Garden Masterclass and was lead by James Hitchmough and Marco Scano. We spent two days hiking various parts of the island to learn more about the various plants that grow in these locations. It was very interesting to learn more about the Mediterranean and the plants that thrive well in this dry and harsh climate. Due to climate change, we need to be able to adapt and in a careful way start exploring using plants from other parts of the world in our planting plans. [ Arabica koffie ] - Oke dus nee ik ben best trots op mezelf dat ik deze NIET UIT HET TUINCENTRUM heb! Ik liep op de markt en de koffie verkoper daar had een stuk of 5 van deze kleine potjes op zijn tafeltje staan. Ik vroeg hem of deze ook te koop waren. Voor een paar euro's liep ik even later weg met deze twee kuipjes Arabica koffie planten. Dit word nog een behoorlijk project want koffie planten groeien niet zo dicht op elkaar maar kunnen enorm groot worden (mits in het juiste klimaat en omgeving) en ik moet deze plantjes nog allemaal een aparte pot geven. Elk... Klein... Plantje... 😩 [ Coffee Arabica ] - So... No, I'm relatively proud of myself to say that I did NOT GET THESE FROM THE LOCAL GARDEN CENTER! I was at the local market when I noticed the one-man coffee vendor had these 5 tiny containers with just recently sprouted coffee beans in his stall. I asked him if they were for sale and after striking a good deal I took them with me for just a couple of euro's. This is gonna be quite a project since coffee plants don't grow as close together but they can grow quite large (if tended to in the right climate and conditions) and so now I have to separate every single plant and transfer them to a container of its own. With the finishing touches layered into each of the gardens and spaces, the Chelsea Flower Show is drawing closer and closer. Yet before we look towards new approaches and ideas by renowned designers like @ann_mariepowell @miriaharris , @tommasseyuk or @tomstuartsmith (to name a few) and thrilling design debuts to the show by @ulamariastudio or @hollyjohnstondesign — it is time to look back at last years gardens. One of which impressed through a delicate choice of plants paired with a unique mindset to a zero-carbon approach. Artist @sarahpricelandscapes grasped and thrilled designers and the public alike. Created with @rachel_asl and build by @localworkstudio the “Nurture Landscape Garden” combined historic techniques with a modern twist, letting each human that was part of the process, leave a trace of their own. From strands of hops tied into ropes, reimagined waste aggregate bricks to straw-bale walls covered with hand painted and reclaimed canvas. In drawing from the mind of Sir Cedric Morris and his legacy left at “Benton End”, Sarah painted a space like none other. I was lucky enough to spend some time at Anglesey Abbey Gardens (just outside of Cambridge) over the weekend. I love the winter garden and it was lovely to go back and see what it looks like in spring. These photos are a great example of how choosing the right plants can add year round interest to a garden. 🪴 In winter: the colourful Cornus stems underplant the multi-stem Prunus serrala (I maybe biased about this tree as I have one just outside of my office 😉). Along with plenty of hellebores. 🪴 In spring: The grasses are starting to grow and it’s a beautiful calming oasis. There are a few white narcissus and the cow parsley is frothing at the back of the borders. This exuberant planting at Bourton Manor shows the ‘spiller, thriller and filler’ principle perfectly, but which plants are best for summer containers? 🪴 Petunias and their close relation calibrachoa: I was not a fan of petunias (I dislike the sticky flowers that needed constant deadheading) but many of the newer hybrids are smaller, multi-flowered and tumble over the sides of containers. I am a convert to colours such as lime green and deep, dark purple 🪴 Geraniums and pelargoniums: a family of over 250 plants that includes a wide variety of species. My personal favourites are the scented pelargoniums that have pretty, scented leaves (think of ‘Attar of Roses’) and dainty flowers – I haven’t tried ‘Coca Cola’, I must admit, but many of the others appeal with names like ‘Sweet Mimosa’ or ‘Prince of Orange’. I love the regal pelargoniums with their velvety flowers and the ivy-leafed geraniums that we see tumbling over the balconies of Swiss chalets. 🪴 Begonias: a plant I have not used in my own containers, although my brother has magnificent shows of begonias in his more colourful pots – and, when I see them, I wonder why I don’t do the same. They flower for months and there are varieties that are ‘thrillers’ in the centre of a display or ‘spillers’ down the sides. 🪴 Verbenas: tumbling verbenas are a must for my containers. They come in a wide variety of colours, are good ‘doers’ and flower endlessly as long as they are dead-headed regularly. Chose any of the colours from white, through searing pink to dark violet and they will enhance the display. 🪴 Foliage plants: every container needs foliage to fill it out (‘fillers’) and to contrast with the brilliance of the flowers in the planting. I use Artemesia ‘Nana Attraction’ alongside Helichrysum ‘Silver Mist’ and Plectranthus ‘Silver Shield’ to give me shades of grey. Last summer, I was delighted with the dark leaves of Ipomoea ‘Sweet Caroline’ with white marguerites in a container of black and white that comprised left over plants but proved to be one of my most successful combinations. Plant of the month - Digitalis or more commonly known as Foxgloves. These iconic plants have tall spires of thimble-like flowers, with an attractive spotted throat which is a magnet for pollinators. It does well in dappled shade and well/drained soil. The Camassias at @rhswisley are a late spring spectacle that is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Planted and now naturalised so densely, engulfing the meadow in a sea of blue.
