Chrysogonum virginianum var. australe ‘Eco Lacquered Spider’ (Green and Gold). I wish people would stop planting non-native, often invasive, groundcovers including Lamium, Ajuga, Vinca, English Ivy, Liriope and Japanese Pachysandra. Instead they should be planting our native groundcovers/living mulches, which are far more beautiful and also benefit the local ecosystem. A superb, low-growing (4” tall), semi-evergreen to evergreen option for a sunny to partly-shady areas is Green and Gold. The bright, dime-sized inflorescences, like mini-sunflowers, are produced for several months just above the hairy, medium-green foliage (Photos #1 and #2). The stems are also quite hairy which adds another layer of interest. There are different subspecies of Chrysogonum virginianum and they have slightly different characteristics. ‘Eco Lacquered Spider’ is an australe type and spreads by long stolons which root in along the top of the soil (last photo). This plant isn’t aggressive, as it doesn’t enter into my lawn or outcompete other desirable plants. My experience has been that this plant dislikes a lot of competition from taller plants and prefers more of an open spot with good air circulation. Mine grow along the edge of garden beds in front of taller plants. In some places it mingles with another native groundcover/living mulch, Fragaria virginiana (Wild Strawberry) (Photo #4). This species is primarily native to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US. Some of my favorite native groundcovers are the ferns, an ancient clade of plants reproducing by spores rather than seeds. The native ferns pictured here all enjoy our rich moist woods in part shade and form weed-free colonies which require very little maintenance. If you have a shady bed on a wooded property and are just filling gaps with hardwood mulch every year, consider green mulching with these. -Osmundastrum cinnamomeum, the Cinnamon fern. Great vertical structure and vase shape. Can reach 6’ in wet areas. Royal fern family. -Adiantum pedatum, Northern Maidenhair Fern. Much lower delicate foliage with black wiry stems in almost a full flat circle. -Matteuccia struthiopteris, Ostrich Fern, named for its broad feathery fronds. Hip height, but can get larger. Sensitive fern family. This is a widespread native also known for its yummy edible fiddleheads in early springs with an asparagus-like flavor. -Dryopteris goldieana, Goldie’s Wood Fern. A much less common fern, though no harder to grow. One of the largest of its genus. 4’-6’ like the ostrich and cinnamon can be. Sedum ternatum (Woodland Stonecrop). A groundcover/living mulch that I absolutely need much more of in the garden is Woodland Stonecrop. It’s just so damn cute! Oh, and native too. The starry flower clusters (cymes) have a salt and pepper look given their snow white petals and purple anthers. The bright green leaves are produced in whorls of three along the creeping, ground-hugging stems. While not completely evergreen in my garden, the foliage looks good for about nine months of the year. Unlike many other Sedums that require full sun, this native groundcover thrives in part shade to part sun areas. Can be used at the base of trees and leggy shrubs, but it doesn’t like a lot of plant competition right near the foliage. It’s non-aggressive and, at least for me, relatively slow growing by groundcover standards. I’ve never had bunnies eat this. A bit of history about Delosperma: Panayoti Kelaidis of the Denver Botanic Gardens (@denverbotanic) introduced the cold hardy Ice Plants in the early 1990s, and they've since flourished in southwest gardens. Originating from South Africa's majestic Drakensberg Mountains and the cold plateaus of the Great Karoo desert, these plants have captivated enthusiasts, including the late David Salman, founder of High Country Gardens. As Panayoti puts it, "They are the perfect getaway plant," and they ignited my xeriscape addiction a decade ago. As Panayoti says, "Your neighbors will think you're the most talented gardener on the block," and indeed, that is a sentiment from where my journey began. Sibbaldiopsis tridentata (Three-toothed Cinquefoil). I believe it was the spring of 2022 when I added a couple of Three-toothed Cinquefoil to the hellstrip between the sidewalk and the street. I wanted to try additional low-growing natives that could handle the full sun and poor, often dry soil. The wildcard was if this perennial could handle the extreme summer heat and also winter rains. Sibbaldiopsis tridentata Is naturally found in cold and/or Rocky Mountain habitats (last image). Their first year in the ground, the plants didn’t put on much new growth. However, that isn’t unusual for most herbaceous perennials or woody plants. Over the mild winters, the plants didn’t remain evergreen as expected. I thought they had died of this past winter. However just about three weeks ago, both plants not only started pushing dense new foliage, but also showed signs of multiplying from short underground rhizomes. Just this past week, the plants began flowering. To the casual observer, this species in flower might be mistaken for some sort of strawberry, however the leaves are smaller and more leathery. I’ll be interested to see if the plants can survive the full sun and baking hot summer conditions here in the long run. These beauties thrive under Colorado's beaming rays, so don't be stingy with sunlight. 2 - Snow's a stubborn squatter, especially here in Denver. Planting your Ice Plants with a “companion rock” is your succulent's snow-slaying sidekick! This easy addition helps create a microclimate and serves as a rock-sized radiator, soaking up the sun, thawing snow, and saving those delicate succulent leaves from a snowy saga. 3 - Mulch matters! Hydrophyllum canadense (Canada Waterleaf, Bluntleaf Waterleaf). The last featured perennial on this Foliage Friday is Canada Waterleaf. This is kind of an odd one because the first leaves that emerge in April are relatively small and have irregular grayish markings that give a water-stained appearance. Just a couple of weeks later, the newest leaves are hand-sized and solid green. Soon this will produce purple to whitish bell-shaped flowers for a couple of weeks. This species can spread by underground rhizomes or self-sowing and can be used as a groundcover/living mulch in areas where the soil remains moist enough throughout the summer and fall. Blooming Now - Lynnhaven Carpet Robin's Plantain (𝘌𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘭u𝘴 'Lynnhaven Carpet) This is such an adaptable, care-free wildflower! Lynnhaven Carpet Robin's Plantain has foliage that lays low and forms a great groundcover, rarely growing above 6 inches tall. When it flowers in mid spring, the flower stems will reach above to about 12 inches and sport white daisy-like flowers with hints of lavender and yellow centers. Robin's Plantain will spread to form an attractive gray-green mat that keeps its vibrant color long after flowering. This variety was discovered near Virginia Beach, VA, and named for the nearby Lynnhaven River. This plant will grow in full sun to part shade in moist to dry soils. It's tolerance of dry shade makes it an excellent pick for a difficult part of the garden to fill. Here are some groundcovers for the shade. *See my Stories for the seed links -Thalictrum -Lady's Mantle -Fern -Hellebore -Geranium (There is an Ontario native Wild Geranium, Geranium maculatum) -Monarda (can tolerate some shade) -Violet -Tiarella cordifolia (Foam Flower), another good Ontario native plant with decorative foliage and cute flowers) -Heuchera (Coral Bells) -Wild Strawberry -Dianthus (there are some low growing Maiden Pink, or popular Sweet William) -Bergenia cordifolia -Bleeding Heart -Asters (There are lots of Ontario native ones! And many of them emerge early, making them good groundcovers!) -Hosta -Yarrow -Evergreen shrubs And so many more. My other fav shade plant is Astrantia (Masterwort). It emerges as these shiny hand-like shaped leaves then quickly becomes a nice green mound of decorative foliage (it loses the shine though) then it starts blooming in June then looks great in July, too! Good cut flowers and dried flowers as well. Keep deadheading, then you can enjoy the flowers for a long time. It can take some sun but is better planted in half shade. It's too bad that most of them are kind of hard to start from seeds so I don't offer them as seeds. I won't list the groundcovers for sun, there are so many plants for sun, so try and see what works for you! Anyway, hope this helps! Another great ground cover AND Ontario native is Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense). Although this probably isn't for a large area (although if the plant likes the site, it'll spread nicely) to cover and grow better in half shade, not in bright sunny areas. It's not a flashy plant, even the flower (the last pic) isn't flashy but it has a charm like a hidden gem. The heart shaped green leaves look nice and it blooms in spring (like now here in my Toronto garden) but this isn't a spring ephemeral, it keeps the foliage throughout the season. Even though the common name says 'ginger', it's not related to the actual food 'ginger'. Also although Wild Ginger was once used as a spice but it is NOT recommended for eating. If you have a shade garden or shady spot, you can have it with hostas and other shade plants, but Wild Ginger emerges earlier than hostas, which is a big plus! Plant of the Week! 🎍 Aloe ferox hybrida 'Southern Cross' or Aloe ‘Southern Cross’ An exotic succulent which grows to approximately 60cm high and 80cm wide. It produces racemes of bright yellow flowers that ‘float’ above the main plant. These flowers open simultaneously creating a spectacular display in the depths of winter. It is best grown in full sun and although it requires well drained soils, it can be planted both in the garden or as a potted specimen. This plant is drought tolerant once established and is self dividing, making it an easy propagation plant. My fav groundcover is Columbine (Aquilegia). Most people probably don't think of columbine as a groundcover because it's not a 'creeping' or low growing plant, it gets about 1ft plus another foot with flower stems. If you want real lawn grass substitutes or if you want something low growing plants, then this is not for you but for me, columbine is a great groundcover because you can enjoy the plant throughout the season, from maybe March to Oct/Nov or sometimes the foliage stays semi-evergreen. It's biennial but usually it'll reseed and grow like perennials. It can take some shade, sun, and not picky about soil. There are so many varieties including a native one (Pic 2&3, Aquilegia canadensis, common names are : Canada Columbine, Red Columbine or Eastern Red Columbine). Columbine starts growing early in spring, so you have a nice green ground before other plants start emerging. When it starts emerging in spring, the foliage is really beautiful and very decorative! Then it blooms in May (in Toronto) and if you keep deadheading, you can enjoy the flowers until summer or longer! Even when it's done blooming, the foliage keeps its green until the frost. Let it self seed so you don't need to sow the seeds! If you see the leaves looking battered in late summer, simply remove them, most of the time you'll see the new growth underneath. You can grow other plants with columbine, usually it doesn't mind! And columbine is very easy to grow from seed! Viola canadensis (Canadian White Violet). You’d be hard pressed to find a perennial as charming as Canadian White Violet. Each flower packs in a lot of interest, including the backside of the petals which are light purple. This long-lived Viola will continue flowering heavily until it gets hot in late spring and will often resume flowering in the fall. The foliage looks good during the whole growing season. The flowers of native Violas feed pollinators and the heart-shaped leaves provide food for caterpillars of many butterfly species. Maxing out at about 12” tall, this will lightly self-sow and makes a wonderful living mulch in part shade to part sun locations with evenly moist soils. Native to a large section of the US but listed as Endangered or Threatened in several states.
