Black moon tomatoes seeds from @grownlocalco Quite a thick skinned (but with a satisfying snap!) little tomato, plant grew vigorously from seedling but the trusses of which there were only four per main stem on mine grew slowly and ripened slowly. I’ve been cadging grass and garden trimmings, shredded paper and card from work plus a bit of bark chip to build up this heap quickly to get it nice and hot and get it doing it’s thing! Evening slug and snail removal! All three of my fellow family members think it’s hilarious that I go out each evening to gently collect up the slugs and invite them to please feast well on our compost offerings and not on our new veg plants. I tell them they will eventually get these veggies if they will just please let them grow. They will be very welcome to the tops of the courgettes, carrots and aubergines if they let them have their growing time! I hope they listen soon! 🐌 Also look at the photos carefully; clearly egg shells are not a solution!!!! #allotmentupdate quite a busy day today finishing the little diddy fence between my border path and the bed I spent ages digging marestail out of! It’s now painted and the bed is resheeted to try and exclude as much light as possible. The bed has weed suppressant and wood chip to try and weaken its growth there too and 20 stations of cara main crop potato have gone in through little crosses in the sheet. At least it should keep the moisture in and this bed was treated with nemaslug in march so 🤞it helps a bit as the sheet creates a great habitat! I had some calendula over winter and start regrowing in the blueberry bed and the first one is flowering! Such a moment!! What plant labels would you use? They are on my to do list to create. Today I had a day of recycling and repurposing. I’ve used up some scrap piece of wood from the workshop to make little plant labels and used my pot maker from @burgonandball to make some paper pots using my packaging and the paper from my @whogivesacraptp toilet roll. I’m going to try and join in with the @allotment_and_cake #allotmentabc challenge! My very weird “A” is for my poor broken greenhouse that I’ve not even grown anything in yet 🤷♂️ thsnks storm whateveryouwerecalled! I had to replace a lot of the “A” panels in my halls popular greenhouse and managed to pick them up today and get some triangular bits cut from some broken and dodgy bits. I’ve siliconed them in this time and tried to create “rip strips” of cord behind the seal so if they need removing I can pull the cord out and break the seal 🤷♂️ Donna from our local merchants @huddersfieldplateglass (oops they don’t seem to have Instagram yet!) suggested this as her dad used to do it. Tis the season to be mulching 🎶 so it’s a good job there are super cheap end of season deals to be had! I was lucky enough to find 198 bags of 20L peat free less than half price at a popular large diy store and given I have to still make 7 beds that take 1200litres of muck each this has made a great contribution to that. No dig certainly isn’t the cheapest way to get going on a new allotment but it’ll pay dividends in the end. #leafmould making 2021 is in action! Collecting leaves for homemade leaf mould from the pavements is win-win so long as it’s left in wooded area where it’s part of the natural cycle. I get a useful material to store for future use in mulching and making home made seedling compost and these aren’t left to blow all over getting wet and slimy under foot or wheels! So the dreaded blight has struck. I think I’ve caught it early and I’ve taken action: . I’ve removed the affected plants and chopped back foliage to allow air to circulate around the remaining plants. . I have added a layer of cardboard and fresh compost to the surface of my tomato pots (in theory this may prevent fungal spores spreading fro soil to leaves *i think* not really sure, but I’m willing to give it a go!!) . Finally, I read that seaweed feed is a good natural fungicide… again, I’ll give it a go! .
