It takes a village to support Raiden. Nearly three years ago, we had no idea what this journey would entail or who we would encounter. While we wish we never had to meet them under these circumstances, we are incredibly grateful for the amazing people who make up Raiden’s care team. His physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, feeding therapist and many others have shown immense love and dedication to Raiden and our family. We are truly thankful for each and every one of them. ***Photo above are just a few of those incredible people ❤️ #ittakesavillage #raiden #careteam #thankful #pt #ot #speech #feedingtherapy #raredisease #gtube #dearraiden #racingagainsttime #uba5 #warrior #specialneeds #nonverbal

✨Sunday Reflections: I try to take a little quiet time on Sundays to sit in stillness and notice what bubbles up. Today it’s been all about trust. It’s so important to me that I chose it as one of my core values for my business. My primary goal as a pediatric feeding therapist is to provide a safe foundation for the whole family to explore feeding challenges with their child/sibling. I firmly believe therapy cannot begin until there is trust. And we seem to be in a challenging time with trust. I see a lot of people struggling to trust our medical system, trust their providers, trust social media, and trust each other. I get it! And I sat with some hard feelings about it today. So join me as I explore this important topic these next couple of weeks. I hope we can start a conversation because I’d love to know what everyone else is thinking about it! #feedingbabies #infantfeeding #babyfeeding #feedingbaby #breastfeedinghelp #feedingtherapy #feedingtherapist #stlouismo #stcharlesmo #stcharlescounty #small business #smallbusinesswoman #slpsfollowingslps #slplife #slpfeeding #speechlanguagepathology #momhelp

Food to help your child gain weight 🥣 I’m not talking about cookies or cake! 🍰 I’m talking about healthy weight-boosting foods! ✅ Here are some top tips for you: 🐟 Serve protein at EVERY meal and find proteins that are also high in iron, like red meat, egg yolk, and oily fish - these are super nutritious. 🥔 Serve a starchy carb at EVERY meal. Whether it’s bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, or cereal, these are great energy providers. 🥛 Opt for full fat or whole milk versions on the shelves to help boost their energy, protein and calcium. 🥑Make sure you’re not restricting foods high in fats and even sugar! Of course, this food group won’t always be providing lots of nutrients, but they are great energy providers. 🧀 Fruit and veg are great for nutrition but won’t help your child gain weight. So when offering fruit and veg, serve them with energy boosting foods like cheese, hummus, even ice cream etc. P.S. If you’re worried about your child’s lack of growth or weight gain, it’s important to take action. The FIRST step is to identity whether it’s common fussy eating or something else going on like a food aversion. I have created a free quiz to help you identify what's going on for your little one ⤵️ Comment the word QUIZ below and I’ll send it to you! #fingerfoodideas #toddlersnacksidea #feedingtoddler #toddlersnackideas #toddlersnacktime #toddlersnacking #fingerfoodrecipe #feedingkidshealthy #foodfortoddlers #thehungrytoddler #fingerfoods #toddlersnacks #toddlersnack #feedingtoddlers #kidsnutrition #feedingkids #raisingkids #mealtime #toddlernutrition #childnutrition #tiredmum #healthytoddler #kidfriendlyfood #toddlerfoodideas #feedingtherapy #toddler #toddlers #fingerfood #toddlerlife #mumlife

Every mealtime for a picky or anxious eater is like heading into battle, are they going to accept it, fight, flee, or just freeze!? Increased pressure during mealtimes can also increase this response, even subconsciously we may think we are being supportive and encouraging but this could be perceived by a child as demanding or stressful😥 When adrenaline kicks in, appetite is suppressed. Therefore, it’s really important to try to reduce demands, meet your child where they are at and build on this slowly to avoid the fight/flight/freeze response🥊✈️🥶 This is not just in feeding therapy, but these responses can be observed in many situations where there is increased pressure on a child. Be kind, be patient, be forgiving and give yourself a break too🩷 #OT #PaediatricTherapy #OccupationalTherapy #SosApproachToFeeding #GetPermissionApproach #FeedingTherapy #AdrenalineAndAppetite #PickyEater #AnxiousEaters #SlowAndSteady #Genesis #MyDubai #OTabroad

🌟 Food Play 🌟 Kids learn through play and it is no different when it comes to food! Handing a child a piece of broccoli and saying “here, eat this” does not make them very excited or comfortable taking a bite. But what if you handed them a plate with a few pieces of broccoli, some carrot slices, and yogurt and asked them to make a jungle picture with it? That sounds way more fun. And while they are making the picture they are being exposed to the smell and texture of a variety of foods! That is just one example, food play has endless possibilities, especially with a child’s imagination! During some of my feeding sessions we have… * Used a spoon as a slingshot * Used a toothpick and smaller pieces of food to make mini dumbbells * Stacked food into towers * Painted a picture with applesauce * Used a carrot stick as a paintbrush * Wrote letters in yogurt * Balanced pineapple pieces on Giggle Wiggle * Put chocolate pudding on a Mr. Potato Head and then touched our same facial features with the pudding * Carried food across the room balancing it on our nose Messy food play is essential to increasing comfort with food, increasing exposure, and working toward willingness to trial new foods! What fun ways have you introduce a new food? #pediatricOT #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #feedingtherapy #messyfoodplay #foodplay

Reminder: Stop asking your fussy eater what they want for dinner! ❌ They’re not going to give you a sensible answer 😂 Instead they’ll choose the food that they’re most familiar with and what they like the best. ✅ Your child's job is to decide how much they eat. ✅ Your job is to decide what they're offered to eat. Take the responsibility of ensuring their nutrition away from them! How old is your little one and what is your biggest concern with them right now? Happy Saturday. Here's another little quick win for you! When your baby is starting out with weaning, they probably won't be taking very much solid food and the majority of their nutrition will still be coming from milk 🍼 . . . To avoid wasting all that lovely puree that you've made or bought, one little hack is to use an ice cube tray to portion out the food and keep it fresh 🥕🥑🥔 . . . Then all you have to do is de frost and heat it up for their next meal 🥣. Simple! . . What foods are your babies enjoying at the moment? Have you found any good recipes? 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 Let us know in the comments below ⏬️

🌟 Picky Eating 🌟 Some degree of picky eating is “normal” and expected, especially around the toddler years. When the picky eating limits their diet so much that nutritional intake is a concern, seems to be getting worse, has lasted for an extended period of time, or is creating intense stress around mealtimes more intervention may be beneficial. Although, in reality these steps and increased exposure develop comfort around foods and can be beneficial for all kids no matter how many foods they currently eat. With picky eaters we want to make sure mealtime is stress free! To do this always offer at least 1 “safe” food during all meals. Then work through the interaction roadmap (after meals or during snack time) to provide increase exposure in a fun and stress free environment. Typically a child needs to be exposed to the food 15-20 times before they can develop a comfort and determine if they like the food. This interaction roadmap can be broken down into even more steps as needed! And never force a child to progress to the next step, follow their lead, model as appropriate and be silly! Language around food is so important.. never force any step. Use “you can” language while modeling steps and food play! I also like to have child rate the food with a thumbs up, thumbs in the middle, or thumbs down during each step of food exposure. I refer to food as “my favorite” or “not my favorite” to eliminate using such strong words as hate, gross, and disgusting. *Occupational therapist/feeding therapist can provide evaluations and interventions if you have concerns about picky eating! #pediatricOT #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #feedingtherapy #pickyeaters #pickyeating

🍽️ Mealtime Magic: As a feeding therapist, I’ve learned that mealtime battles don’t have to be the norm. When your child declares their dislike for a meal, try these strategies: 1. Stay Neutral: Instead of engaging in a power struggle, remain calm and neutral. Your child’s preferences are valid, but they don’t dictate the menu. 2. Set Boundaries: Be firm about what’s on the plate. It’s okay to say, ‘This is what we’re having for dinner and I’ve made sure to include ___ that you like.’ Consistency helps. 3. Timing Matters: Choose a moment when your child isn’t eyeballing that dreaded broccoli. Discuss the impact of words and encourage positive language. 4. Model Behavior: Be the mealtime role model. Describe textures and flavors, making food the focus of conversation. Remember, mealtime is about more than just food—it’s an opportunity for connection and learning. 🌟 #FeedingTherapist #MealtimeStrategies #parentingtips #pickyeater #pickyeating #pediatricot #feedingtherapy #feedingtoddler #parenthack #toddlertip 📚🔍 🔔 Check out my YouTube channel, Touchtree OT: I help picky eaters explore new foods and provide practical tips for mealtime success. 🛑STOP and SAVE this post to refer back to later when you’re needing help with ideas! Occasionally changing up the WHERE can sometimes be a great strategy in helping your child (and baby 😃) interact with new and/non-preferred foods! ➡️ It’s important to note that this strategy is beneficial because… 1) It’s exciting and FUN to eat in a new place every once in a while AND 2) It can help lower the pressure around food and mealtimes which we know DRASTICALLY helps kids be more willing to interact with foods 🙌 Some ideas: ☀️ Get outside and go on a picnic! 🌦️ Raining outside? Spread a blanket on the floor in a different room ⭐️ Dark outside? Bring in candles and eat your meal by candlelight Give this a try and let me know how it goes! ⬇️

Language refers to receptive and expressive language, as well as pragmatics. Receptive language is the ability to understand and remember what is being said. Expressive language is one's ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings through words, gestures, symbols, or a communication device. Pragmatics is how we use language in our everyday lives (e.g., conversation, greetings, social interactions, etc.). All of our SLPs at Champion Pediatric Therapy are Language Experts! They can help guide you and your child through understanding all aspects of language and how to help maximize your child's language skills! @championpediatrictherapy #championpediatrictherapy #championpedi #occupationaltherapy #physicaltherapy #speechtherapy #feedingtherapy #oralmotor #behaviortherapy #outpatientclinic #pediatrictherapy #bilingual #summercamp #socialskills #socialskillsgroup #socialgroup #sanantoniotx #sanantoniokids #helotestx #helotes #exceptionalkids #sanantoniopediatrics #helotestx #helotespediatrics #sanantonionaturalparenting #finemotorskills #grossmotorskills #STmonth #betterhearingandspeechmonth

A trip down the bottle isle is A LOT. 🍼🍼 There are so many choices 🍼🍼 Choosing a bottle can feel overwhelming, but the best place to start is by watching your baby. Here are four things to consider: 🍼 Acceptance There are lots of variations of shape, size, and material of bottle brands and some babies might have a preference. The best bottle is one your baby will accept! 🍼 Flow Rate The level or age range advertised is not always the best way to determine the best fit. Watch your baby for signs. Gulping, coughing, dribbling, pulling away can show the flow is too fast. Prolonged feeds, fussiness, or lots of sucking with little intake can be signs it is too slow. 🍼 Accessibility and Affordability Just because a bottle is expensive or frequently advertised does not mean it is the best or only fit for you baby. If you have ongoing difficulties with feeding or need more support, a trained feeding therapist can help! #momsupport #feedingtherapytips #speechandlanguagepathology #feedingtherapyworks #feedingtherapy #speechtherapy #bottlefeedingtips #babybottles #babybottletips #babyfeedingtips

The duration of the effects of e-stim therapy for dysphagia can vary depending on several factors, including the severity of the dysphagia, the underlying cause, and the individual's response to treatment. In some cases, the effects of e-stim therapy may be temporary and require ongoing or periodic sessions to maintain improvement. However, for others, the benefits of e-stim therapy may be long-lasting, especially when combined with other dysphagia management strategies such as swallowing exercises and dietary modifications. It's essential for individuals to work closely with their healthcare provider to determine the most effective treatment plan and frequency of e-stim therapy sessions based on their specific needs and goals.

Ultrasound scans can sometimes capture images of babies sucking their thumbs or fingers during prenatal checkups. This sucking reflex develops early in fetal development and serves as a vital skill for feeding once the baby is born. #feedingbaby #breastfeeding #bottlefeeding #infantfeeding #feedingtherapy
