👐 Fine Motor Fun: Tearing Paper! 👐 Did you know that tearing paper is more than just a fun activity? It's a fantastic way to develop fine motor skills in children! Here are some key benefits: ✨ Strengthens Hand Muscles: Tearing paper helps build the small muscles in the hands and fingers, essential for writing and other daily tasks. 🎨 Boosts Hand-Eye Coordination: This activity requires coordination between the eyes and hands, enhancing visual-motor integration. 🤲 Improves Bilateral Coordination: Tearing paper requires both hands to work together, promoting the coordination between the left and right hands. 👶 Develops Pincer Grasp: Holding and tearing paper between the thumb and index finger helps refine the pincer grasp, important for tasks like buttoning clothes and using utensils. So next time you see a pile of scrap paper, let the kids have some fun while building essential skills! 📝💪 #FineMotorSkills #OccupationalTherapy #ChildDevelopment #HandStrength #CreativePlay #EarlyLearning #OTLife #PediatricOT

Happy Friday! 🤩💫✨ Do you get as excited for puzzles as we do?! 🧩🧩 There are so many developmental benefits when it comes to playing with puzzles! Puzzles come in a wide variety and there is virtually a puzzle out there for every age and skill level. Introducing puzzles around age 1 can help to encourage a handful of developmental skill-building opportunities. Between ages 1-3, large knob insert puzzles are a great fit, then transitioning to smaller peg top insert puzzles. Shapes, animals, and bright colors can help to encourage language development, as well as developing fine motor skills, visual motor skills, and cognition! 🟡🐶🚘 Around age 4-5, beginning to transition from insert puzzles to interlocking jigsaw puzzles (around 12 pieces) can further support the development of cognition, visual perceptual skills, hand-eye coordination, and much more! Touch and feel puzzles can also offer added benefits for tactile processing when it comes to sensory exploration! ✋ #dvpt #ahwatukeefoothills #gilbertaz #pediatrics #pediatrictherapy #speechtherapy #occupationaltherapy #puzzles #developmentalmilestones #pediatricOT #pediatricSLP

Great topic! Occupational therapy (OT) for kids is a type of therapy that helps children develop the skills they need for daily living, social interaction, and play. OT can help kids with various challenges, such as: - Fine motor skills (e.g., writing, using small objects) - Gross motor skills (e.g., balance, coordination) - Sensory processing (e.g., responding to sounds, textures) - Self-regulation (e.g., managing emotions, focus) - Social skills (e.g., sharing, taking turns) - Adaptive skills (e.g., dressing, feeding) Occupational therapists use play-based activities and strategies to support kids' development and independence. Some common OT techniques include: - Play therapy - Sensory integration activities - Adaptive equipment and assistive technology - Cognitive-behavioral therapy If you suspect your child might benefit from OT, consult with your pediatrician or a qualified occupational therapist (that's me 🙋🏼‍♀️) for an evaluation and personalized guidance! #occupationaltherapy #pediatricoccupationaltherapist #homehealth #daycares #functionalskills #stepupforkidsprovider #stepupscholarships #kids #peds #pediatricot #homeschool #workthroughplay #lifeskills

GROSS MOTOR SKILLS Gross motor skills are the physical skills which require the use of the whole body, stabilisation of the core muscles for movement to perform every day functions. Gross motor skills are important foundations for every day functions such as getting dressed, playing in a playground, balancing on uneven surfaces, climbing in/out of a car etc. Gm milestones help guide intervention with rolling, sitting balance, standing, walking, running, skipping, managing stairs and climbing skills demonstrating an increase in difficulty; more coordination and complex movements. We use gross motor movements to also work on motor planning, eye/hand coordination, eye-foot coordination, sitting balance and postural stability. Gross motor movements can also be opportunities for sensory input. I’m pulling out my rocker board (purchased from Kmart Aust) and gym ball (about 30 cm and I’m not sure where I bought it) to plan a range of gross motor activities for the coming week. I’m wearing @karma_east ! This long sleeve top is from the Kantha range and is called the Tulsi LS Top in Periwinkle. The pants are Acapulco Pants in Navy. So comfy and easy to move in for OT sessions! Stay tuned for a video with some of the activities that I’ve come up with combining these pieces of equipment. #karmaeast #karmaeastambassador #learningthroughplay #grossmotor #grossmotorskills #ot #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #pediatricot #paediatricot #therapyideas #therapybloggers #otlife #yourkidsot

Please, this is so important. It's especially important for healthcare practitioners that work with kids. When we assume that disability is automatically a bad thing, we take away their choice to choose who they want to be. Yes, disability can come with challenges, but it's also an identity. ID: Slide 1: "Break the Stigma" text graphic in black and white is at the top of the slide, placed in front of a large black jagged crack that runs diagonally across the top half of the slide. Underneath, in green: "Disability is NOT inherently negative." At the very bottom right of the slide is the logo for Pediatric Therapy CEU, with four books leaning against each other, with a mouse hovering over, next to the name of the company. Page 2: "If I were to ask about any other aspect of identity, would the same assumption be made? Would we think the same about someone’s religion or ethnicity?": Page 3: "The assumption that disability is automatically a negative thing is just that...an assumption." Page 4: "'When we assume that disability is a bad thing, we take away our client’s agency and autonomy to decide for themselves." Page 5: "When we do this with kids, we take away their choice to become who they choose to be." Page 6: "Disability is about honoring diversity, the same way we work to honor our client’s own cultures." Day 5 - Natalie Playing cards are fun and easy to find! The combinations of patterns, numbers and colours mean that cards can serve many games and purposes. Some therapeutic uses from our therapist Natalie: For fine motor training: The sorting of cards into different stacks of patterns or colours as a competitive game. One has to use bilateral coordination skills to hold a pile of card in one hand, while using the manipulative hand and thumb to get and flip over the cards as quickly as one can. For visual processing training: All the cards can be spread out and each player has to pick up one set of cards from A to 10 and J, Q, K, and keep them in the correct sequences. For executive function training (inhibition and attention): Play Slap Jack and make up rules with different levels of complexity. For example: Easy level- Slap at red colors only. Medium level- Slap at odd numbers only. Hard level (+ Training auditory attention)- Slap when the number that the dealer called out is the same as the card shown. #PediatricOT #MakingConnections #Playingcards

If dining out is difficult for your neurodivergent child, you are not alone. And if you anticipate feeling judged if you provide accommodations for your child, please remember that our kids are trying their best to stay regulated in a neurotypical world. So if they need food from home, if they need to stand up and walk around, fidgets to keep their hands occupied at the table, then…that’s what they need, period. ✨ Neurodiverse affirming parents offer their kids accommodations when needed ✨ 🎧 Listen to the episode at THEOTBUTTERFLY.COM/117 or search for “Sensory WISE Solutions” on your favorite podcast app. #neurodivergentkids #sensoryprocessingidisorder #sensoryseeking #sensorysensitive #pediatricOT #diningoutwithkids

Occupational therapy can happen anywhere and everywhere! One of my favorite parts of my private practice is that I get to work with clients in different places. This means I get to go into real-life situations where your child needs extra help. Outside the clinic and outside the school. Yes, sometimes I need to think on my feet to make a situation work. But that’s what makes it fun. In fact, I’ve seen kiddos in so many different places 🏥Clinic 🏫Classroom 🌳Park 🛋Living room 🍽Kitchen Table 🥅Backyard 🛒 Grocery store Coming up with therapy ideas based on my client’s interests and whatever materials happen to be there. And actually, this approach works insanely well. That’s because the heart of an effective OT session isn’t about WHAT we do, but about the connection that is created through shared activity. The ability to go into different places and connect with your child is the secret ingredient of OT services at Honeybee. And it’s this ability to connect that I share with parents too. Let me know in the comments, what’s a skill you can think of that might be hard to work on in school or in a clinic? #pediatricOT #sensoryprocessing #schoolOT #helpingfamilies #pediatricoccupationaltherapy

It’s about creating a supportive environment where children can thrive, respecting their individual differences, and empowering them to reach their fullest potential. Here’s how I integrate neuroaffirming principles into my work: Child-Led Therapy: We follow the child’s lead, focusing on their interests and strengths to make therapy engaging and meaningful. Sensory-Friendly Spaces: sessions are designed to be a safe and comfortable space, tailored to the sensory needs of each child. Using trampolines, crash mats, Lycra tunnels, air cushions etc. Collaborative Goals: I work closely with families to set realistic and personalised goals, ensuring the child’s voice is central to the process. Positive Reinforcement: Celebrating small victories and progress, I build confidence and self-esteem in every session. Education and Advocacy: I educate families and communities about neurodiversity, promoting acceptance and understanding. Join me in celebrating neurodiversity and fostering an inclusive world where every child shines! 🌈✨ #NeuroaffirmingOT #PediatricOT #Neurodiversity #ChildDevelopment #InclusiveTherapy #CelebrateDifferences #EmpowerEveryChild

Day 4 - Carrie Our OT Carrie loves Playdough! This classic toy promotes skills like bilateral coordination, in hand manipulation, grasp and proprioceptive input for hands. Carrie says ‘I like that it can be used as a sensory tool to help kids hands calm down or it can work on motor planning and making different things. You can add toothpicks and beads to work on matching colours and shapes as well.’ So many options! #PediatricOT #MakingConnections #Playdough

Letter Recognition and Writing but make it FUNctional. 📚 Variation and alternative ways of learning (e.g. manipulatives) are so beneficial when writing is non-preferred. Skills are still being demonstrated here! And yes guys, for my district…school is still in session, almost there 😅 #thediligentot #occupationaltherapist #schoolbasedot #occupationaltherapy #pediatricot

Muscle tone is the resting tension in a relaxed muscle. This is different from muscle strength, which is the ability the contract and resist forces. There is a wide range of tone and what is considered normal. While muscle tone is not something that will generally change over time, physical or occupational therapy can offer strategies to build strength to compensate for lower tone. If you are concerned about your child’s tone, don’t hesitate to book today! #lowtone #tone #pediatricpt #pediatricphysicaltherapy #pediatricot #pediatricoccupationaltherapy

The tactile sense allows us to feel things around us, such as wind as it blows through our hair, a chair if we bump into it, pressure from a tight hug, and even a shirt tag that is itching our backs. These receptors give us input and information to make a response. We all respond differently to the input that interacts with the receptors on our body. #pediatricOT #sensorysystems #touch 8 senses: Hidden sensory systems. (2024, January 13). ❤Who is going to save this for later? ✏Letter formation usually includes the ability to form both letters and numbers correctly. 🧠Research has shown that good letter formation is a significant predictor of the mastery of good handwriting. 📚These are the stages of letter reproduction development: 🖍The ability to both recognise the sound and name the letter; 🖍The ability to draw the component lines such as the circle, and the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines; 🖍The ability to watch someone draw the letter and then make their own, known as imitation: 🖍The ability to copy a visual representation of a letter before them; 🖍And finally, to be able to write the letter from memory. This requires the child to retrieve a visual picture of what the letter looks like and then represent that on paper. #pencilgrip #finemotor #finemotorskills #finemotoractivity #finemotoractivities #letterformation #kidshandwriting #occupationaltherapy #scissorskills #prewriting #pediatricot #occupationaltherapyforkids #otideas #ottips #schoolbasedot #schoolot #schoolreadiness #handstrengthening #pencilgrasp #otresources #happyhandwriter #thehappyhandwriter #masterthemotormap #therightwaythefirsttime #buntymcdougall #buntymcdougallot #finemotorfun #thewallmodel

Don't Rush Handwriting! ✋ Many kindergartners lack the pre-writing skills they need These are the building blocks for good handwriting, like lines, shapes, and strokes. Why it matters: Stronger Foundations: Pre-writing skills help kids form letters correctly, leading to better handwriting and faster writing speed later. Confidence Boost: Mastering these skills builds confidence, making the transition to writing smoother and less stressful. Fun Ways to Build Pre-Writing Skills: Sensory play: finger painting, shaving cream, playdough Building activities: sticks, popsicle sticks, Bendaroos Creative expression: sidewalk chalk, drawing shapes Let kids explore and have fun! The focus should be on enjoyment, not perfect lines. Hold off on formal writing until those pre-writing skills are solid.
