I am going to use Occupational Therapy Month to share some of my favorite things I use in my therapy session. Today, I am sharing the @hopelearningtoys Sensory Tray. I love the versatility and durability of this tray and especially love how easy it is to clean. One of my little friends really wanted to play the cupcake game while on a swing today and I couldn’t figure out how to do this without it being complete chaos and then I remembered my sensory tray was not being used and dumped everything in there. I was able to provide the sensory input of slowly swinging while my friend got to play with one of her favorite toys. In addition to April being Autism Awareness Month, it is also Occupational Therapy Month. I am fortunate enough to have a job that I truly love and know that it makes life easier for the kids and the families I work with which is a true gift. If someone were to come watch me at work, they would think that I just play all day long which is just partly true. Since play is a child’s most important job, I have to incorporate toys, games and play into my work in order to help them meet their goals. I love this graphic from @chicagooccupationaltherapy that clearly identifies the major skills that pediatric occupational therapists work on during their sessions with kids. A very calm Friday at the MyOT clinic 🐣 Today was all about joining the letters r and e (a surprisingly tricky task!) and working visual-motor integration with a geoboard (pic 2). 🧩 Geoboards are great because: 1) they can improve concentration and working memory (aka can keep boredom at bay for longer than five minutes 🤭) 2) the possibilities are endless 3) are efficient in working sooo many motor and visual perceptual skills. Visual perception skills allow a child to interpret and make sense of what they see in their environment. These skills begin to develop at birth and continue into childhood. Visual perception skills are required for every day tasks including cutting drawing reading dressing navigating a playground etc... Matching and sorting is a lovely activity to develop these skills in the earlier years. Some children benefit from activities which offer further meaning and purpose to spark their interest to take part in activities like matching and sorting.
