Have you ever thought of giving your toddler scissors? 9/10 parents would say "no way!". Cutting with scissors is a lot harder than it looks and they should start young. Take a look at the expectations of what they should be able to cut and at what age. Don't be afraid to give your child scissors. Start with blunt, child safe scissors and have them explore them using play dough and paper. They should be able to explore using scissors with both hands at 1 1/2 to 2 years old. As always, supervise your child and work with them to teach them how to cut. You know your child best and when to progress to sharper scissors. #missjaimeot #occupationaltherapy #schoolbasedot #pediatricot #visualmotorskills #developmentalprogressionsofscissors #scissors #cuttingwithscissors #schoolbasedlearning #athomelearning #parenting

Love Language: Physical Touch Your child receives the most love through physical touch...whether it is hand holding, hugs & kisses, snuggling, or even wrestling. Other ideas: playing tag, twister, piggyback rides, making a "spa day" and do mani's and pedi's. In school? - High fives, fist bump, elbow bump are all forms of physical touch. Have them sit next to you. If their love language is physical touch, remember that giving them praise, buying a gift or fixing a toy might be nice, but not what they prefer. #lovelanguageforchildren #lovelanguage #missjaimeot #pediatricOT #sensory #pedicatriccota #otactivities #otresources #schoolbasedlearning #cota #schoolbasedOT #OT #occupationaltherapy #sensoryprocessing

Flashback originally reposted using @withregram with permission from @missjaimeot Too much clutter, every wall covered, things hanging from the ceiling, desks covered with pictures and visual cues, etc. Children who are easily overstimulated get distracted by all of these things. Teachers wonder why so many kids have such poor attention – maybe all the clutter is what is distracting them? Also, when children are trying to copy from the board, they need to change the position of their head (as well as their visual gaze) from looking at a vertical surface (board) to a horizontal surface (notebook). Think of all of the visual distractions in the path from the board to the notebook. No wonder they have difficulty copying! Take a look at your classroom, home, therapy room. What is one thing you can remove. I know it might be hard but think about how much better it would be for your kids with attention issues. #sensory #calmingenvironment #otadvice #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #cotalife #schoolot #pediatricOT #Specialed #cota #otresources #schoolbasedlearning #schoolbasedOT #learningathome ••• #otedtip #classroomdecorations #classroomtips #kindergarten #kinderteacher #kinder #kindergartenteacher #prek #prekteacher #prekteachers #specialeducation #specialeducationteachers #specialneeds #earlychildhoodeducation #earlychildhoodeducator #attention #focus

Elevate your paper snowflake craft with two more items! Make a sun catcher! All you need is tissue paper and contact paper. Fold and cut the paper snowflake however you want and then place it on the contact paper. Stick the tissue paper on the sticky spots to fill up all of the holes you created. so simple and so fun! This is a great winter activity as it targets so many skills! (cutting, folding paper - motor planning, bilateral coordination, ripping the tissue paper, fine motor skills, visual perceptual skills to fill in all of the "sticky spots") #schoolbasedot #OT #finemotorskills #occupationaltherapy #otresources #handwriting #schoolbasedOT #schoolbasedlearning #pediatricOT #pedicatriccota #otactivities #winteractivities #snowflake #visualperceptualskills

Is it snowing yet by you? Playing in the snow can provide so many benefits for our little kids. So bundle up and head outside on a snowy day. When you are outside in the snow, try and build a snowman. It helps with body awareness. What items can you use to add to your snowman? Also, don't forget to make some snow angels! Hand strength & bilateral coordination = make snowballs! Perfect opportunity to build the muscles in your hand. You can also try throwing the snowball up in the air and catching it yourself (That's visual motor integration at work). Were you able to catch it without it breaking? Upper body and core strength = help shovel that driveway or sidewalk. Make sure you use those leg muscles when bending down instead of your back. You do not want to strain any muscles. Visual motor integration and oculomotor skills: After you make snowballs, find a target (a tree or a moving target --a person) and throw that snowball at it! Playing outside in the cold is a fun sensory experience. Can you tolerate the cold? How does it feel to walk in the snow? Roll around in the snow, etc. #schoolbasedot #OT #cota #missjaimeot #sensory #finemotorskills #researchbased #occupationaltherapy #otlife #cotalife #athomelearning #learningathome #learningatschool #otresources #handwriting #schoolbasedOT #schoolbasedlearning #pediatricOT #pedicatriccota #otactivities #sensory #winterplay #snowday

Children will learn folding, spatial concepts like half, middle, corner, etc. I have older children use a ruler to make a line to change the paper into a square. Here is a low prep activity that is jam packed with skills! First start by tracing a triangle on the paper plate. Then cut the triangle out. The paper paper should have an empty triangle in the middle. The brown you see is the table. Next up...place some dots along the sides of the tree and work on hand strengthening, bilateral coordination, and visual motor skills in order to line up and make holes using a hole puncher. Next, lace yarn through each hole...targeting visual motor integration and bilateral coordination skills. Lace around the holes multiple times if you want the tree to look fuller. Finally, decorate! Draw and copy pictures such as presents, snowflakes or anything else you can think of! Want to make it more festive? Color around the rim of the paper plate with paint, markers, or stickers to look like a wreath. #schoolbasedot #OT #cota #missjaimeot #sensory #finemotorskills #occupationaltherapy #otlife #cotalife #athomelearning #learningathome #learningatschool #otresources #handwriting #schoolbasedOT #schoolbasedlearning #pediatricOT #pedicatriccota #otactivities #developmentaltoys #holidays #presents #christmas #visualperception #visualperceptualskills

Here is a simple activity that targets letter recognition, pincer grasp, visual motor integration, and bilateral coordination. Peel and stick stickers to match letters. You can put upper case or lower case letters on the stickers. See how well they can line up the stickers on the target. If they have difficulty peeling stickers from the paper you can peel it and stick the stick on them to peel off. You can also peel the stickers for them and place it on the edge of the table for them to pick up and place onto the paper. Grade the activity up or down depending on your kids skill level. Flashback originally posted using @withrepost with permission from @missjaimeot What is web space? It is the space between your thumb and index finger. When you hold a pencil or pen, it should rest in the "web space" and the thumb and index finger are bent. You should see a circle. However, if a child's hand is weak, the web space will be closed. The pencil will look squished or the thumb might be wrapped around the pencil. When the web space is not strong and open, it can lead to decreased control and precision during fine motor tasks. Handwriting will be poor and slow. Here are some activities you can incorporate during your sessions. But my child never said anything?! It is very common for a child to have no visual complaints. This is the only way they have seen the world, so they are unaware that there is a problem. They do not realize that seeing the words “get blurry and clear” or seeing the words “moving” on the page is not how we are all seeing. These are common symptoms of near vision focusing problems. The Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey is useful in helping to identify children that may have near vision focusing problems. E had an educational psychologist assessment completed recently. Throughout the testing, E ran up her slide, hung off her bed frame, swung on her sensory swing and did zoomies around the room. The tester asked if the movement helped then tried encouraging her to sit on the little stool E had set out before Miss F arrived. E tried, but shuffled relentlessly, tipping the stool back and forth before definantly getting up again to move around. It reminded me of school and how her movement was discouraged, but she was offered "movement breaks" as an accommodation. It made me realise now, in hindsight, what a terrible accommodation that was. I didn't realise it at the time. I'm glad now she can do what feels right, and good, for her and her learning process. . . #sensoryprocessingdisorder #spd #sensorybreaks #senco #accommodations #schoolbasedlearning #unschooling #fidget #classdistruption #sensorybreaks #movementbreaks #schoolsen #sen #autism #autistic

Thankfully there are fun ways to work on this skill and strategies you can give to help them right away! I listed a few but you can get the full list (with all of the other visual perceptual terms) to work, the grocery store or a friends house. However, some children don't have that internal Waze app at school and sometimes they may feel lost walking around a big school. It seems like a simple task and maybe a reward for a student if they are able to go to the office for you to drop off attendance or get copies but for children with difficulties in topographical orientation, they will decline this opportunity. We're almost done! Up next: Visual Motor Integration. This is the ability to coordinate visual perceptual skills with motor movements to perform a task. Visual-motor integration skills are needed for handwriting, using scissors, assembling a puzzle as well as playing catch. You have to be able to process visual information to guide hand function. If a student has trouble with this skill, try focusing on large gross motor movements first with larger tools. For example, cut out larger shapes before smaller shapes. Also, highlight boundaries for cutting or coloring. Thankfully there are fun way to work on this skill and strategies you can give to help them right away! I listed a few but you can get the full list (with all of the other visual perceptual terms for just $4.99!) Some additional ideas? Visual Closure: The ability to "fill in" a picture, a letter, or word when only part of it is seen. Children with poor visual closure skills may mistakenly leave closed letters "open" such as writing an "o" that looks like a "u". This may impact spelling and writing grades. Another example is when a student transitions slowly between classroom tasks because he has difficulty locating books and folders in his desk. Thankfully there are fun way to work on this skill and strategies you can give to help them right away! Visual Attention: The ability to attend to visual stimuli. This is a visual-cognitive skill. Visual attention involves alertness, selective attention, and divided attention. It is needed to attend to new information, process it into new knowledge, and store it as a memory. A student with good visual attention will reach for a crayon, maintain visual attention to the crayon while reaching to grasp it. A student who lacks this skill may glance fleetingly in the direction of the crayons while reaching and misses his mark, knocking a group of crayons on the floor. Thankfully there are fun way to work on this skill and strategies you can give to help them right away! I listed a few but you can get the full list (with all of the other visual perceptual terms for just $4.99!) Some additional ideas? Visual Spatial Orientation. The ability to perceive two or more objects' position in space relative to oneself and in relation to each other. This is also known as position in space. A child who has good spatial awareness will know how to place letter equal spaces apart, touching the line and also knows which letters hang under the line (p, g, j, y, and q). A child who has difficulty with this skill will have issues with handwriting. They will have difficulty with spacing, sizing, letter reversals, and letters that float or sink below the writing line. This child will also have difficulty with gross motor tasks as well as participating in organized sports. Thankfully there are fun way to work on this skill and strategies you can give to help them right away! Visual Memory: the ability to recall details of a picture, letter, or symbol. This is a visual cognitive skill, just like visual discrimination and visual attention. Visual memory plays a unique role in the process of reading and letter recognition as well as math skills. Visual memory is an important skills in order to write letters without a model. Children who do not have a strong visual memory of letters may continually ask you..."How do you make an E?" or "What does the letter M look like?" Visual memory helps with mental math, reading sight words, reading comprehension, and keyboarding skills. There are many games and strategies to help strengthen your those visual memory skills. Visual discrimination....the ability to recognize particular features like shape, color, or size of a picture, letter, or symbol. Studies show that children with strong visual discrimination skills demonstrate better letter recognition. This is an important skill when discriminating between letters that look similar (b, d, p, q). There are many games and strategies to help strengthen your kiddos visual discrimination skills. Here's another simple activity you can do! I don't know about you, but I save a couple of empty Valentine’s chocolate boxes for the following year. (if not, the dollar store definitely has heart boxes). The dollar store usually has seasonal foam shapes for each holiday. These glittery pink and red foam hearts were especially festive. For a dollar, the bag had a whole bunch of small, medium and large red and pink glitter hearts. Work on Visual Perception – Sort by color or size. Practice patterns “Pink, red, pink, red” or “large, small, large, small” Work on Crossing Midline – Place the bowls on either side of the body to make the child reach across to get the object. Make it a super simple hand strengthening activity by using tweezers to pick up the foam pieces. #valentinesday #valentinesdayactivities #handstrengthening #otactivities #occupationaltherapy #pediatricot #missjaimeot #schoolbasedot #cotalife #cota #ot #schoolbasedlearning #learningathome

It Valentine's Day Activity Week! One of my favorite tools is my dollar store kitchen tongs! Make a sensory bin! Go to the dollar store and pick up tongs, hearts, and your fake snow, shredded paper, rice, pasta (whatever you want to fill it up with). This is perfect to work on hand strength because the tongs really challenge little hands when they open/close. This is also a great activity to develop pre-cutting skills. #valentinesday #valentinesdayactivities #handstrengthening #otactivities #occupationaltherapy #pediatricot #missjaimeot #schoolbasedot #cotalife #cota #ot #schoolbasedlearning #learningathome

Offering your expertise to the schools by selling your business is not only a game changer but it is very lucrative. This is a massive way to get your business in front of a larger audience instantly. Here are a few tips that I have implemented to gain my own educational contracts. Step 1: Research the schools you are interested in to create an understanding of their target audience and needs. Step 2: Create a compelling pitch that focuses on how your program can help meet those needs of the student and or administration. Step 3: Contact the school administrators and teachers to introduce your program and explain how it can benefit the school. Step 4: Be prepared to answer any questions, have your funding on hand, and offer incentives/or live workshops to test the temperature of the success of your program at the school. #educationalresources #educationalleadership #educationalmarketingdirector #educationalconsultant #contentcreator #digitalcontentcreator #marketingstrategy #creativepreneur #artseducation #steameducation #steameducation #onlinebusiness #onlineselling #womenintech #marketing digital #digitalmarketing #creativepractice #elearning #elearningdevelopment #marketingconsultant #virtualteaching #workfromhomemom #wifepreneur #momprenenur #laptopliving #laptoplifestyle #curriculumdevelopment #schoolbasedlearning #educationtips #womenownedbusiness

Playing outside in the cold is a fun sensory experience. Can you tolerate the cold? How does it feel to walk in the snow? Roll around in the snow, and have fun! You can also try throwing the snowball up in the air and catching it yourself. Were you able to catch it without it breaking? When you are outside in the snow, try and build a snowman. It helps with body awareness. What items can you use to add to your snowman? Also, don't forget to make some snow angels! Hand strength & bilateral coordination: make snowballs! Perfect opportunity to build the muscles in your hand. Upper body and core strength: help shovel that driveway or sidewalk. Make sure you use those leg muscles when bending down instead of your back. You do not want to strain any muscles. Visual motor integration and oculomotor skills: After you make snowballs, find a target (a tree or a moving target --a person) and throw that snowball at it! You can also try throwing the snowball up in the air and catching it yourself. Were you able to catch it without it breaking? Playing outside in the cold is a fun sensory experience. Can you tolerate the cold. How does it feel to walk in the snow? Roll around in the snow, have fun! Grab some clean snow and make ice cream. All you need is 1 cup milk (any kind) ; 1/3 cup granulated sugar ; 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ; 1 pinch salt ; 8 cups clean snow or shaved ice. The weather is getting colder...it is the perfect time to start making some...paper snowflakes! Children will learn folding, spatial concepts like half, middle, corner, etc. I have older children use a ruler to make a line to change the paper into a square. As long as you aren't disrupting other classrooms...who says that students have to just "walk" back to class. Especially if you have younger students who make transitioning difficult. I like to rephrase my words and instead of saying "it's time to go back to class," I will say, "How are we going back to class?" You can provide pictures of different animal walks, motor movements, maybe they want to carry a fidget toy, or a weighted object. Provide a few options and sometimes keep some options on the back burner so when you change it up, it feels new to them. What types of transitions have you tried successfully with your students? It will be worth it with all of the smiles and giggles and memories you are creating with your child. And as an OT there's a huge amount of fine motor skills targeted with baking. Mixing Scooping Rolling Slicing Decorating Pouring Molding All of these tasks need your hands to work together. Here is a low prep activity that is jam packed with skills! First start by tracing a triangle on the paper plate. Then cut the triangle out. What is web space? It is the space between your thumb and index finger. When you hold a pencil or pen, it should rest in the "web space" and the thumb and index finger are bent. You should see a circle. However, if a child's hand is weak, the web space will be closed. The pencil will look squished or the thumb might be wrapped around the pencil. When the web space is not strong and open, it can lead to decreased control and precision during fine motor tasks. Handwriting will be poor and slow. Here are some activities you can incorporate during your sessions. A quick warm up before handwriting tasks is always a great idea! #missjaimeot #pediatricOT #finemotorskills #pedicatriccota #otactivities #schoolbasedlearning #schoolbasedOT #handwriting

There is a strong possibility that a lot of students are struggling with underlying vision issues. Students diagnosed with ADHD, who are not making progress despite being on medication, may not really have ADHD. They may be struggling with poor vision skills. This is why I developed my Vision 101 course. To help you understand our role in how to screen, identify, and treat vision deficits in the school setting. Many OTs aren't trained in vision assessment, so you might not feel comfortable yet. This Vision 101 course will be available to purchase this Wednesday! A measuring tape has been in my bag for TWO decades. I have a ton of stuff in my therapy bag but this is probably one of the "weirder" ones compared to typical OT tools. But, this tool comes in handy: 1. To measure the length of the floor tile where you work to document how far a kid jumped, scooted, etc. 2. For handwriting or scissors assessments. Ex: Johnny is able to cut out a circle within 1/8th of an inch of the designated boundary. 3. How tall the student’s desk or chair is—this allows me to ask the custodian for exactly what I need: a 14-inch chair, not a “smaller” chair. It’s so important that we assess the furniture our kiddos are sitting in. +2 more reasons. Correct wrist position and stability is so important for handwriting. Wrist stability is the ability to keep the wrist still while the fingers manipulate an object. This is another important component to building fine motor skills. The position of the wrist determines how well one can control a pencil. The correct position of the wrist should be in extension Signs of poor wrist stability: 1. flexed wrist posture (wrist is bent forwards) 2. wrist is not resting on the table (wrist is floating) This is why you may see occupational therapists do activities at the wall on a vertical surface. This position helps strengthen and stabilize the wrist and the shoulder. Writing and drawing on chalkboards, working on magnetic easels, geoboards, pegboards, or playing on a Lego wall are all good ways to promote stability in the wrist. #finemotorskills #handwriting #pediatricOT #pedicatriccota #cota #otresources #schoolbasedlearning #schoolbasedOT #learningathome #otlife #missjaimeot #occupationaltherapy

Do you know a child who struggles with putting the straw through the Capri Sun? A sticker at the top provides a visual cue to show where to place their hand. Their thumb will go right on top of the sticker while putting the straw through the hole. Visual cues are great to use when children are learning new skills. It reduces visual memory to improve efficiency. Some children may have difficulty sequencing and remembering a multi-step task, and visual cues help provide extra information so they can succeed. #pediatricOT #finemotorskills #pedicatriccota #otresources #schoolbasedlearning #schoolbasedOT #learningathome #otlife #missjaimeot #OT #schoolbasedot #occupationaltherapy #pediatricot #pediatricoccuptionaltherapy
