It’s Technique Tuesday! 👩🏻🏫 Today we’re spotlighting Musical Speech Stimulation (MUSTIM®). This technique utilizes musical 🎶 materials, such as songs and over-learned phrases to simulate prosodic speech gestures 📣 and trigger automatic speech 🗣️. It’s primarily used with individuals who have aphasia due to stroke or dementia. If I started to sing “Happy birthday to…” - you filled in ‘you,’ didn’t you? A simple, familiar and over-learned tune such as Happy Birthday 🎈 can trigger automatic speech due to the strong association of melody and text in long-term memory 💭. For people with aphasia, this often makes singing easier than speaking! The songs used in this fill in the blank exercise depends on the musical preferences of the individual - the stronger the connection, the more effective it will be! ❤️ Complexity can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the number of target 🎯 words or by changing the location of a target word from the end of the phrase. 🙋♀️Gestures are an important part of language development, but most parents overlook them. 🙋Gestures always precede first words, so they’re a really important step in learning to communicate. 🙋♀️You can identify potential developmental delays sooner by observing your child’s gestures 🙋The more gestures your child uses early on, the more words they are likely to have in their spoken vocabularies later in development. 🙋♀️ A child who points and shows objects will most likely learn the word for that object within 3 months. 🙋If you are the parent of a toddler who hasn’t picked up many gestures yet, you are not alone. 🙋♀️Some children benefit from extra support. It’s Fact Friday!💡Did you know that there are seven different types of dysarthria depending on the location of neurological damage? 🧠 The seven types of dysarthria are flaccid, spastic, unilateral upper motor neuron, ataxic, hypokinetic, hyperkinetic and mixed dysarthria. While each type of dysarthria comes with its own presentation, the general symptoms of dysarthria include slurred speech, slow or rapid speech, irregular rhythm of speech, overly soft or loud speech, harsh or breathy voice and monotone volume or loudness. Dyslexia Dyslexia is a learning disorder that is related to language, which affects reading, writing, and spelling. It is a neurobiological condition that involves difficulties with phonological processing and decoding language. Because individuals with dyslexia have a slower time decoding words, they also present with comprehension difficulties. Characteristics of Dyslexia: - Phonemic awareness (difficulty rhyming, blending, segmenting, manipulating sounds in the placement of the word (e.g. “stop becomes tops”, alliteration) · Inability to sequence sounds · Difficulty associating letters and sounds. · Difficulty in spelling is due to the inability to recognize individual sounds in a word and recognize that sounds are made up of one or more letters. · Learning how to read · Read very slowly (effortful) · Difficulty remembering names and sounds. It’s Technique Tuesday! 👩🏻🏫 Today we’re spotlighting Rhythmic Speech Cueing (RSC®). This technique uses auditory rhythm (the metronome!) ⏱️ to improve the temporal characteristics of speech. It’s primarily used with individuals who have a motor speech disorder 💪🏻👄 characterized by weak speech muscles called dysarthria, as well as apraxia of speech and dysfluency. Did you know that motor speech function shows the same sensitivity to rhythmic entrainment 💥as found in fine and gross motor functions? For people with dysarthria, rhythm creates a viable target for speech rehabilitation by serving as a stable time anchor ⚓️ and facilitator of coordination for articulatory muscles. The simplest cueing is metric, meaning one syllable per beat. For example, I - am - a - neu-ro-lo-gic - mu-sic - ther-a-pist.
