📕 Reading area 📕 Our reading areas were not being used for its purpose in the corners of our 2 classrooms, often a place where children would hide and not actually read a book. So after a discussion with an EY consultant who had come to see our provision, we moved it into the space between our classrooms, it is now the heart of our environment. Children will read stories to each other, look at books independently and also this is where our adults read 1 to 1 with children. Role play: so as I’ve said in previous posts, we don’t have a role play area/corner that we carefully theme and set up for each unit, instead we work with @abcdoes method of deconstructed role play. This means within our provision we have large blocks, fabrics and pegs, large tubes and at times cardboard boxes too. We then add enhancements that follow the children’s interests, or link to topics. Previously we’ve had a supermarket, doctors and Chinese restaurant (see previous posts). Today I was talking to the children about our role play baskets and said how we could change them. They were keen for us to have a Police Role Play Basket. A few enhancements were printed from @twinkleyschools and a few suggestions of how we could make hats and handcuffs were made…we then had a discovery time with nearly the whole class immersed in a joint game of police. The children made their own phones, handcuffs and wanted posters. We also put Google Earth onto the IWB and looked up our local area. Loose Parts and Transient Resources in Your Outdoor Environment– Outdoor Learning Workshop (South Gloucestershire) June 11th 1:30- 4:00pm In these outdoor workshops, we will be networking, reflecting, discussing, learning and exploring hands-on what makes a good outdoor environment. You will leave with plenty of ideas to take back and influence developing the outdoors in your setting. Using Loose Parts and Transient resources in your Outdoor Environment In this workshop, we will explore the term and popularity of Loose Parts Play and how it supports children’s fascinations, schema play, learning and development. Children can make sense of the world around them by exploring and investigating things that are current, relevant and interesting to them, as well as using natural resources in transient play. Being outdoors is a great environment for adventure and imagination, problem solving and theoretical reasoning developing brain connections and promoting awe and wonder from an early age. This will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your own setting practice and consider how to develop it further. These practical sessions will be delivered outdoors regardless of the weather so please dress appropriately. Please Note: This training day is for early years practitioners working in settings or childminders in our Stronger Practice Hub area. Today we’ve had our friends come to play from little stars childminding,wath-upon-Dearne. Invitation to play supporting all the children’s current schema making gloup or Oobleck Instead of pre mixing the gloup I allow the children to enjoy the process. All the children are either show signs of having or have a ‘transformation schema’. By providing the ingredients needed to make gloup with added flour heads, petals,foam soap along with authentic resources creates the perfect invitation for the I love a quick tuff tray set up that instantly catches the childrens interest and keeps them engaged in there play. This set up took me 10 minutes and I’ve set up with every child in mind. Spatial Reasoning – Mapping the World Around Us (Maths Session 3) June 5th 9:30- 11:30am or 6:00- 8:00pm “Understanding spatial relationships begins at birth” ( Erikson, 2014 ) and we use our bodies and sensory experiences, gesture and language, memory and modelling, pictures and drawings to understand and map the world around us. We will consider the key aspects of spatial reasoning and how best to support children’s learning trajectories through a maths-rich practice and provision. We will touch upon shape and space, mapping and navigation, and visualisation and representation. Woven throughout this session will be the golden threads of noticing, talking and developing a positive attitude towards mathematics. A happy corner 🌈 • @theknowandplayspace With the sun being as glorious as it has been, I’ve slowly but surely been making my way around the garden trying to sort out and finish off all of the little areas for play. We absolutely loved the garden space last year, but 1) a small person is no longer so little and needs different opportunities, & 2) the play corner ended up being in the sunniest spot of the garden and we wanted to have an area with more shade to keep Mr 2.5 safer. I’m hoping to film a little tour soon, but wanted to get the last few bits as sorted as I can… knowing it’ll never be fully finished really 😅 Some new bits from @cosydirect and @tts_resources have definitely added elements of fun and discovery! We wanted to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all the children, staff and parents at Bewley Nursery, part of Bewley Primary, for allowing us to follow their journey around Ten Town over the last few months. It’s been great fun posting about their adventures! It’s always been Ten Town’s aim to make maths fun, and it has been so rewarding to see the children’s smiling faces as they learn through play and demonstrate fantastic number skills. Ten Town is an open-ended resource, so it’s really the imagination and creativity of teachers and TAs like Mrs Hakes and Miss Maher that make it a success. We have been so impressed by the range of activities they have created for the children and the lengths they have gone to, to make memorable learning experiences. They even managed to recruit staff members from the upper school to play the roles of the Ten Town characters!
