In my class, we love to play jenga. I decided to mix it up a little bit by making this social skills themed game that works perfect with jenga-style stacking blocks. Students draw a block of their choice and then need to answer how they would respond to the workplace scenario on it. I have had these blocks for years and they have held up great! For many of our students, school is a routine that they’ve known their whole life and a place where they’ve made many of their friends. Let's bust some myths about kids doing chores! 5 Arguments Against Chores (plus my responses!) 1. You're turning your kids into servants, and you're lazy if you make them do chores. It's actually more difficult and takes longer to teach kids a new skill. I teach my kids life skills to prepare them for adulthood, not so I don't have to do chores! 2. It's not that hard to learn how to do laundry or clean as an adult. If that's true, then it's also not hard to learn as a child. Knowing how to do "grown up" things for themselves gives kids a great sense of confidence and pride. 3. Kids just need to play, they don't need to worry about life skills now. Life skills HANDS ON job training idea: Call around to local florists and see if any would be willing to support a vocational training in your classroom. I had a wonderful florist named @elzi_flowers come to my class and donate all these flowers (plus her time!) so my students could practice making beautiful arrangements themselves. The kids were absolutely glowing with pride and so happy they could make it all on their own. You’d be surprised how many people in your community have something to offer to your students. Whether it is as a hands on training or simply as a guest speaker, it’s important for students to be able to see what life might be like for them once graduation happens :)
