Farm life 🧑‍🌾 One of the home ed families that we spend a lot of time with, live on a working farm. This particular day, they were having some new buildings set down, using this large crane. We took the opportunity to sit on the bank, and watch the crane move these buildings. The children sat and watched in awe as the building swung through the air, (in a controlled manner) 😂 Using moments like to this to engage and learn, is what it's all about.

Homeschooling is such a wonderful choice that I have enjoyed so much. But I also remember many times when practising natural learning was really hard, when I needed more support, when I was doubting if life without school was really a good idea, when I was finding it hard to trust my children’s journey with learning. But looking back, I can see what immeasurable benefits there have been for us all to have chosen this way of life. If I could go back and do it all again, I would make the same choice in a heartbeat. The only thing I would do differently is get more support so I could trust more and stress less, and really enjoy the precious years we have together. More people need to know this 💭 (repost from 2022) . …because I always feel like some people just think life without school is missing a vital part of existence or that we must not live in the real world; when in actual fact life without school couldn’t be more LIVING in the real world and couldn’t possibly be missing anything at all! . Life without school is a valid, wholesome, important, entire way of life. And it certainly isn’t lacking education or requiring a system in place. . Life without school looks really different for many families; all are perfectly acceptable ways of living. . I don’t question why people are still sending their children to school, yet why do I always feel judged because school is not part of our life. Surely minority groups should be accepted entirely and tried to be understood, we’re living in 2022! Rant over. . A group of RLCers joined other volunteers at Trenton Area Soup Kitchen to serve lunch. We helped dish out food and drink on the line, pack items for bag lunches, serve coffee, provide hot meals to go, and clean up after. My daughter kept seeing signs here with the words: "Spanning Levensgevaarlijk" (Electricity/Voltage- Life threatening) and she is fascinated. After seeing a few of these on doors in the cellars of the flat where we are staying, she said she had to draw a story involving her own Rat character and these threatening signs! This Dremel, packed away since my silversmithing days, has recently been making more frequent appearances, much to my delight. The children discovered it can soften pottery edges, drill holes, and today, they found it great for wood etching. Practicing with it, they realized it’s not as easy as it looks. One discussion led to another and soon we were chatting about how road conditions can affect a car’s steering wheel, causing it to shake and impact the axle. Similarly, controlling a Dremel requires precision and steady handling to achieve desired results and prevent unwanted movements. Through practice, users learn to adjust to varying conditions, enhancing their skill and control. One of the joys of homeschooling lies in witnessing children learn through discussions, where conversations can flow in many directions, allowing them to explore and understand a wide array of topics naturally and deeply. I’ve been thinking about how frequently and how nimbly we have to adapt, as home educators, to the forever-fluctuating social scene within home ed. There are phases when we are at the centre of a busy social calendar, and can barely keep up with all our engagements; and phases where we have found ourselves in a lonely orbit and need to connect all over again. Families move away, or their preferences change, or their schedules fill up with competitive extra-curriculars. The logistics of connecting is a whole thing for home ed families. Sometimes, with our quiet children, we are left behind when friends develop a taste for the noisier play styles of the big outdoor groups. These are all things I’m contemplating as our youngest ages out of nursery, and does not choose to put herself into all-day-every-day school. Perhaps it comes with the territory of parenting neurodivergent children, but keeping their social habitat alive requires incredible concentration and adaptive powers from me. Perhaps, though, this is just the nature of friendships in general. By the way, the fog on this beach was intense and all-enclosing that day. I have supported my children's learning at home throughout the "school" years and beyond and the single most important thing in that process was getting support from others on this path. It is so helpful to spend time sharing with other people who can celebrate what we were doing, our choices and the amazing opportunities our children are having exploring the world with freedom and fun. Having support means that we can really enjoy supporting our children's unique learning journey, delight in staying connected with them, trust them, trust ourselves and experience the joy of being together, watching them learn. • This gathering is for mothers who are supporting their child/ren's learning at home whilst also practising aware parenting. • This online mother circle takes place once a month on Saturday afternoon at 12pm AEST. Spring in the Sourland Mountains is nature at its best 🌿🌸. In a hike up the mountain and back we found a showy orchis, lots of rue anemone, eastern tent caterpillars, many kinds of fern (christmas, new york, sensitive), a black tupelo tree, squawroot (a parasitic, non-photosynthetic plant) and my favorite, Virginia spring beauty. And as we were headed back, we came upon a group from @princetonlearningcooperative heading up the trail. En los paises más ricos del mundo, es dónde más se consumen antidepresivos y ansiolíticos. Por lo tanto, no hay que ser un genio para entender que el cúmulo de bienes materiales no es la píldora de la felicidad. Me entristece ver cuanta gente de mi edad es infeliz y se victimiza. Si estás triste pero no haces nada para cambiar tu vida, es que encuentras una cierta satisfacción en tu postura de víctima. He viajado tanto y observado a tanta gente de culturas tan diferentes, que llegué a la conclusión de que la felicidad es una elección. La felicidad se encuentra en el valor que le das a las cosas que tienes, a las personas que te rodean, a los alimentos que consumes, a cada minuto de vida que pasas y que son un regalo. This week has been hectic in our household! Between work, finalising everything, and then celebrating Lidia's 4th birthday 🥳 and then mother's day 💐 I'm absolutely buggered 😅 But I am so happy and grateful to have had my children living this experience alongside us. About a month ago, we asked Lidia if she wanted an experience/adventure or a party for her birthday, and being the social butterfly she is, she chose to have a party with all her little friends 🥰 So together we planned her party. We got our party planner out and wrote down who she wanted to invite and what sort of theme she wanted for her party. Lidia helped me pick and choose and plan everything right down to the cake and decorations. Of course, she went with unicorn 🦄 because that's what she loves right now. Then, fast forward to this week, she was right there experiencing the finalisation of her birthday, which involved running around collecting all the food, decorations, and cake. Then, on the day, going to the park, nice and early, setting everything up, before everyone finally started arriving to celebrate Lidia's birthday with her. The next day, after we rested from all the partying, we casually talked about the experience of watching her whole little idea come to life. So many lessons have been learnt from this experience, including the concept of manifestation ✨️ We all thoroughly loved her party and loved watching her play with all her friends, but I tell ya what! I hope she doesn't choose the party option every year. For those who have listened to this podcast for some time you may have pieced parts of my story together over previous episodes, but I’m sitting down to share it all in what will be the final episode of Season Three. SNIPPETS 🔅 Our family live on the Mornington Peninsula, Bunurong Country, in a sleepy little country town beside the sea. We left our Melbourne roots when I turned 30 to pursue a slower, simpler life and to raise our kids immersed in the natural world. 🔅 I had a fairly typical, carefree 90s childhood, spent running around the streets with the neighbourhood kids. At primary school my fondest and most vivid memories are of spending recess and lunch up trees with my friends, deep in imaginary play. 🔅 Once the idea had taken hold in my heart, I began devouring anything and everything I could get my hands on to do with homeschooling. 🔅 I had faith that if it meant enough to me, Dan would find his way to where I was too. But I knew it would take time, for him to even consider it, so I was patient but remained persistent. 🔅 When setting up our lives to adopt a homeschooling lifestyle we moved houses to a more affordable area, we went from being a two car to a one car family, and these descision all aligned with the vision we had for our future. 🔅 We have four tenets in our family that guide our days. The change in the cub since last summer has been huge. I couldn’t really get him inside last year, he just wanted to be outside, barefoot, doing his own thing. But after a long, wet winter and lots of time at home, he’s come to love being inside, not really wanting to leave the house ( which he’s named Cool Dude) for too long. He discovered Minecraft last year, and that set him well and truly on the gamer path, and is a strong player for lead role in why he loves staying at home so much. Getting lost in other worlds while using that logical mind of his… perfect! Maaaan, what a journey that’s been though, trying to let go of all the fear I had entangled myself in around ‘screen time’. It seems EVERYONE has a pretty strong opinion on the topic and so much judgement gets thrown around. I know I was definitely one of those parents a year ago! But, then I started really noticing how much calmer and happier he was with big chunks of time spent gaming. It brings him so much joy, and is a great self regulation tool when he gets overwhelmed or tired ( and in true projector style, he really needs his down time!) Once he’s had his gaming fix, he’s pretty eager to then get outside for some adventure time. It is ALL about autonomy for this little guy, and he needs me to really listen to him when he’s telling me he loves something. He doesn’t need me to stomp in with my opinions or fears, which let’s be honest, are made up from strangers opinions and fears. Scientific evidence doesn’t quite hold up as given truth for me these days. Listening to and observing each other, taking the time to understanding how each of our brains are wired individually, and figuring out how WE work together as a family holds so much more value. So, right now , we’re living a life of pretty much equal indoor and outdoor time, and navigating how we include little pockets of screen time on our outdoor adventures. Of course all the computer games are completely forgotten about when he gets to hang out with his best bud for the day. People are starting to get on board with the idea that kids need physical freedom: to move their bodies, explore their surroundings, play outdoors, and have ample unstructured time without constant adult supervision or restrictions When will they realise that children also need mental freedom? The freedom of not being told how to feel or what to learn. To explore their own interests and to say no to learning experiences that don't interest them. The right to have private thoughts, and to not have their learning tested and judged. To be supported in making their own choices, to be allowed to question, and express themselves creatively. I have supported my children’s learning at home throughout the “school” years and beyond and the single most important thing in that process was getting support from others on this path. In 1968 George Land and Dr. Beth Jarman developed a test designed to identify the capacity for divergent thinking and creativity. This is the same creativity test used by NASA to hire more innovative engineers. They wanted to explore and try to understand the true source of creativity better. For the purposes of the study, they defined “genius” as how one uses their creative imagination to solve problems. Land and Jarman began by testing 1,600 children between 3-5 years old enrolled in a Head Start program. The results showed that 98% of the pre-schoolers were considered creative geniuses. This was a surprisingly high number in their opinion, so they continued testing the same group of children as they aged. By age 10, only 30% of these children were considered creative geniuses. By the time they reached high school, the number had dropped to only 12%. When they conducted the same test on a group of adult-aged people, they found that less than 2% were creative geniuses. “What we have concluded,” wrote Land, “is that non-creative behavior is learned.” What do YOU think? In the not so distant future, I see myself as a stay at home mum, home educating my little ones, while my loving husband goes out to work to be the breadwinner 💪. After dedicating 15 plus years of my life to a career that brought me financial stability at a time when i was struggling as a single mum to two kids, I plan to take a loooong break and explore my true passions through de-careering? (Is that a term? Deschooling/decareering 😆). Although quitting my job may seem unimaginable now and also a little scary to be honest, deep down, I know that being a full-time homeschooling mum, focusing on my children's education, is what I truly desire. Just a couple of years ago, homeschooling was unimaginable, but something shifted and fell into place, making it a possibility. I have faith and trust that soon, in divine timing, leaving behind my 15-year career to educate my little ones at home and allow my husband to support us (a whole challenge for me in itself because I've never relied on no man before yo 😎👊 👑 😆) will become my everyday reality.
