We love visiting Asaba Model School in Biiso, Biliisa District and we have given them mosquito nets over the years, we gave them a community borehole, we have taken several of their primary 7 graduate students toTHSS, and have left them with some art projects but there's something very wrong in these classrooms. Oliver’s school had “share a lesson” night last week and it was legitimately really cool to see what and how he’s learning every day. He taught me a reading and math lesson and when it came to the math piece- he truly had to teach me (apparently memorization isn’t the thing to do anymore). The hands on way Montessori teaches foundational understanding of concepts is really incredible. Scientists first noticed something was up in a study that compared two similar groups: transit drivers, who sit most of the day, and conductors or guards, who don’t. Though their diets and lifestyles were a lot alike, those that sat were about twice as likely to get heart disease as those that stood. You’re more likely to die earlier from any cause if you sit for long stretches at a time. It doesn’t help if you exercise every day or not. Of course, that’s no excuse to skip the gym. Launching a baited mink raft during a watervole reintroduction programme I volunteered on. The rafts housed a soft clay base which captured footprints of the peckish visitors. Through print ID we could ascertain whether mink (voracious, non-native predators) were present before reintroducing watervoles. As humans, we are very used to living in a certain rhythm. It would be interesting to see how we adopt and change to the new normal. I did a timelapse of the floor and ceiling where I work. I realise that I stare at the ceiling a lot as I paint, as I day dream. The floor is where I tap my feet in anxiousness, in rhythm, in chaos. I thought the combination of the two is a nice portrait of an artist's mental space during an uncertain time. 5/6 — @zen.teh: I am currently working in the trajectory of art x botany through found plants in the midst of urbanity. I am collecting (and trying to) propagate wildflowers that have recently bloomed all over the island. Often deemed as weeds, these wildflowers are rarely seen in such varieties and vitality within urban spaces because of regular grass-cutting. These chance encounters of wildflowers (at my doorstep!) in this pandemic instantly spark joy and curiosity. This period has been a window of opportunity for us to reflect on the way we have managed nature (not just greenery but wilderness) in Singapore. Wildflowers play a tiny role in the carbon cycle, but they serve as a metaphor for resilience, which inspires hope for our planet’s environmental recovery. While grass-cutting, like urbanisation, is essential for a city, how can we achieve a balance? The act of using wildflowers and my attempt to propagate/grow/shape them into a structured installation within the confines of a historical building, precisely discusses this multi-faceted tension we have here in Singapore. This is certainly a strange time. I don’t know what to make of it as things are evolving almost as quickly as we can adapt. Isolation feels strange as human beings are innately social creatures. Even as an artist who uses the digital medium widely in my work, the heavy (and almost sole) reliance on technology feels discomforting. Life after this can swing either way – a race to catch up for what we feel we have lost, or a chance for changes in our lifestyles that have been cast aside. 1/6 — @mrydette: Frankly speaking, it seems like I have been training for isolation all my life. Life before, during and after circuit breaker is about the same for me; the hustle never stops. Honestly, it's only going to get busier after isolation as I'm probably going to spend most of my time figuring out how to operate working/teaching online. It's challenging when my work is with the people, face to face, heart to heart. Ah, but Isolation. He is a peculiar creature of sorts. He taught me how to sit with my discomfort and work it out on my own. He taught me the value of time, how to measure time and how to use it meaningfully. He showed me who'd stand with me, and who wouldn't. He demonstrated how being alone works to my advantage. I did many things I couldn't have done in any other normal circumstances. Most importantly, I had time to learn about myself, to be me. I am working on a mini-series broadly titled "Love in the Time of Corona". Each mini painting is a response to an email sent to me. These emails were part of an email-chain that went on for a short time last month. In each email is a word, a quotation, a song, a poem that meant something to the sender. On the receiving end, (because I tend to romanticise things a little too much sometimes), I imagine these emails as love letters from strangers during this bizarre time. This had to go in my permanent feed. We’ve worked on trying to find interest in learning letters and numbers but it’s been a battle not worth fighting. Language has been our first priority and we knew at some point letters and numbers would come. So today when Akers yelled, “mommy come see! I wrote a word!” (He hasn’t understood the concept of letters making words). And sure enough he had written “oh”. I was so proud and then wrote his name out for him and he immediately copied it (he’s never done this). It may be backwards but I couldn’t be more proud of that little written out name. He then proceeded to write the letter “m”. Sometimes kids just have their own timing. Things will click. So this is what we came up with! And its guaranteed to be a hit! WITHOUT FAIL! You literally freeze their toys in ice and then give them tools to excavate them out. What tools?? Glad you asked!! . 🧨EXCAVATION TOOLS🧨 . •SALT: Salt melts ice and expedites the process of extracting the toys. Plus, it makes cool designs. . •LIQUID • WATERCOLORS: they don't quicken the process but they sure make it more intriguing and the colors extend their play! . •CARVING • TOOLS: you can use 🥄spoons (metal or plastic), hammers, plastic nails, golf tees, popsicle sticks, and other sticks. Explore your home for chisel-like tools! . •CONTAINERS: if you freeze the eggs in a balloon, it will make and egg shape! We call them dino 🥚, but you don't have to use balloons. You can use any gem inside of your Tupperware cabinet. Especially any missing the lids. Try even adding the liquid water color before freezing! . •OTHER: try setting out a plethora of materials for the kids to explore, such as spices, oil warm water or Grab yourself some shaving cream. HINT I use the cheapy stuff so I can have the Monat goodness all to myself. Lol Plus for science dollar store gets the job done.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 . A great day at River Valley Charter School; project group immersion day!! Our Middle School project groups spent the day fully immersed in experiential learning. Just some of the day’s activities included the following: a materials and tools demo by a local architect/designer/sculptor and a tour of the studios of a local husband and wife team of sculptors for the art project group; a day of drama for the theater group; a visit from a very special dog named Tucker and pizza making and service planning for the community service group; 3D printing and bot programming for the technology group; a visit to an escape room with a behind the scenes tour for the woodworking group; and a beautiful, challenging hike for the physical education group...and so much more. Officially done with this (mostly) black and white, farmhouse themed, flexible seating classroom! I can’t wait to see my fourth graders faces when they walk into their room on the first day! Last year I started flexible seating with my Kinders, but everyone still had an “official” seat. This year I’m taking the leap into full flexible seating with no desks, community supplies, and no assigned seats.
