In between the sections an expansion joint as this section is almost always in direct sunlight and you would be amazed how much it does expand. This LGB Uintah 2-6-6-2 has been brought back to life. After being inspired with battery controlled G-scale locomotives at the Club, I had the motivation to disassemble and do further diagnostics with this steamer. The sound board was missing and wires were snipped in every direction, which actually made it easier for me as I don’t feel bad for cutting the wrong wires. I tested the motor blocks and to my surprise both of them were operational and even the lights too. I scoured several G-scale forums to research on how to convert it into battery power. I ended up with the familiar PWM controller (I already had one in my stock pile) hooked up with a 12V Li-Ion rechargeable battery. I went to my local model train shop to buy some traction tires and spare bulbs. All in all it cost me $62 for this project. Down the road I may convert it to R/C but right now my 7-year old son loves driving it the way it is, he feels more in control when he’s right next to the control knob. Is there an R/C system that’s under $50? I cleaned off all the grease and dust as I can possibly reach and fixed some cosmetic issues. The smokestack was painted red so I stripped the paint off to revert it to black. There’s some missing detail parts but you don’t really notice it from afar. The wooden crates were from Daiso and they fit perfectly on one flatcar. In between wiring, a little bit of gardening and painting 2 windows on the house I found time to run a couple of trains to test the layout after the alterations made over the last few days. Took out my HelJan GWR mogul n0 5327 and the BR class 37, D6737 for a spin hauling the 8 Dapol Mk1 coaches available. Another productive day working on the new branchline for the garden railway. Repositioned the point and layed the missing track to connect everything up again so I can at least run my trains. The last bit, the curve, was made to fit the gap and is ready for a coat of woodstain and roofing felt. Laying track will be something for the future as I want to do this after I have build the bridge across the center of the garden. A nice day today to continue building the new branchline, the centerpiece is still being designed but both sections on either end are being build prior. Had to add 2 posts and for one of them a bit of chisleing was required as there is a layer of pavers in the ground against the bottom of the retaining wall. For today I'm. Done, the new section is drying outside, the expanding glue takes a good few hours, after that I can apply woodstain and roofing felt. Proving the planned baseboard construction works! It does! I need to nip to the wood yard next week for a decent amount of 2x1 as my stocks have run dry to the point that to do this trial run, I had to borrow the washing line prop! This section will actually be nearly twice this width as it'll be taking 4 tracks + 2 sidings and then expanding further up to provide a couple of storage loops. Posts have been paired with their sockets and mark up so it's easy to relocate them. I'm lucky to still have about a gallon of proper creosote hiding away, so these will be getting their bottoms soaked later on this week to promote some longevity. Once the top board was fitted I just had to get some track out (for testing purposes of course) and have a little play, even if only along a 1 yard section! #gardenrailway #oogauge #hornby

I managed to get a couple more Gresley teak coaches, which are surprisingly hard to find, which is odd given they are made by Hornby and they haven't actually had any in their catalogue for years now. I'm not sure about their LNER express engine:coach ratio of releases is quite balanced correctly. Now that the better weather and lighter nights are with us, it's time to catch up with some jobs; The far reaches of the garden are finally being cultivated into something welcoming and pleasant. For some time, these far reaches have been a store of weather proof boxes full of bits for projects. It's also been the home for a temporary tent acting as a workshop which saw the construction of the 24ft square Glyn Valley Tramway layout. Time has moved forward and the tent is due to come down in June. This has prompted me to sort out the far reaches and this has opened the door to relocating my Beddgelert station building to a more suitable location. I have a long standing theory that if the answer is not straight away clear, leave it and return to it with fresh eyes. My original idea was to use a straight base board and create curved running lines. Beddgelert has a wonderful sweeping curvature which I felt I could not replicate on the straight base board. The last corner of the garden to develop has now offered a more suitable solution, so its time to move! My original station building of Beddgelert was purchased second hand many moons ago at a garden railway show. It has been since restored by Brunel Models and I strongly felt that I needed to create a space for it to give it justice. Framework has been built on top of existing up-right post and decking planks are being used for the trackbed. Lots still to do but I am already smiling as the end is in sight. Finally the question of what to do has been answered. I've spent the afternoon tweaking the railway and mending a few broken connections at the end of some of the sections where the rail is soldered to a brass screw, it sometimes just pops, no damage but it needs to be fixed before running. Next I took my 4 Mk1 coaches out to test the new point and re-layed curve, a few little tweaks but nothing mayor, I did however discover why the coaches sometimes randomly derail, it has to do with the corridor connections that are sticking sometimes thus lifting up the a joining carriage. It took me some time to actually see what happened but now I know what the issue is. I've also layed a new straight section of track at the former passing loop, this loop is now a siding minus a bufferstop, that will eventually become the new branchline connecting to the Y point at the green bridge. #gardenrailway #7mm #0gauge #Dapol #mk1coach #gartenbahn

For ages I’ve been looking for ways of converting my fleet to 32mm gauge whilst retaining the ability to run on 45mm gauge (which I prefer) without having to buy a whole new set of bogies and wheels. Finally I found a company which could make me some 32mm gauge wheel sets on a 45mm gauge axle length with 2mm journals. If I had thought about this in advance I would have used Accucraft sets, but they have a 3mm journal so are too big. So now I have a set of 32mm wheels and 45mm wheels without needing to change bogies. 32mm wheel sets from Tenmille with the bogies and 45mm wheel sets from Brandbright.
