I have a ton of zines to share from the @blackzinefair yesterday but here are a few more highlights that I didn't fit into the mini vlog. The best part by far was getting to meet @brattyxbre_ who is the artist and YouTuber that inspired me to get into this awesome DIY community. She's truly the Beyoncé of zines so I'm so thankful I got to say hello 😊😇 It was also super fun going to the writing and screen printing workshops as well and chatting with some crazy talented people. On Friday, May 10th, I stopped by my new favorite bookstore @peoplesbooktakoma to attend their free Adult Zine Workshop! I had no idea what to expect but was fully picturing maybe ten people to show up, including myself. But there were double that many people there and it was a lot of fun! I made a few new friends and was glad I already knew how to make a one page zine to help speed up the process since we only had a little more than an hour to create. If I had more time I would've went HAM on this zine, but having such a time constraint was a nice challenge to force me to just make SOMETHING without overthinking it. I've included the album covers for each of the albums I wrote about in case anyone's interested in checking them out to listen. Ya'll should see my Spotify playlists though....this barely scratches the surface of my rando music obsessions 😆 This was also my first time using bigger paper, rather than my usual computer printer size. Samurai Slasher: Late Fees (2017), by @mikegarley and @elkowalczuk One from my personal collection, today! This is a comic that featured the Samurai Slasher, a horror movie style character who features in some other comics. This particular issue is through the eyes of a young boy who is introduced to the films by his father, and as he grows up and realises life, and in particular, his father, isn’t all he’d thought he was, he tackles his worries, pain and confusion through the escapist lens of the Samurai Slasher mythology. This comic is really great to look at (Lukasz Kowalczuk is an excellent artist), easy to read, and also thought provoking. What an amazing first trip to Lexington! @halftonezinefest was so much fun and it was so inspiring to meet such talented fellow zinesters and see everyone's very cool work. I got to chat with so many lovely folks and participated in several zine trades (I love and appreciate every trade tysm)! Thank you to the organizers for a smooth and well-run event and everyone for coming by to support small and indie publishers. Off to read all these zines and get cataloguing! 📚📓📖🪴 I kept a pretty detailed travel log of this whole visit, which may or may not become a zine soon 👀. Hello again and welcome to my second ‘Sunday Reads’ showcase! This is the place where I share some quick fire thoughts on smaller books and with a much more relaxed vibe. Ideally I wanted to do one of these weekly at minimum but it’s been two months since my first post… oops. In the spirit of the more relaxed vibe I’ll try and do one of these posts once per month but based on my current track record, I won’t make any promises! That being said let’s see what bitesize books I’ve been reading… Underground Kingdom Comix Presents: Crime, Horror & Romance - A selection of short stories and art by some of ol’ Blighty’s best and brightest cartoonists working with classic comic genres and with a heavy dose of underground energy! A24 Zines: Dance Like Me, Never Coming to a Theatre Near You, The Von Erichs & Brendan - To be blunt, these zines are perfect for the film buff in your life. They range from dance lessons by David Byrne for the Talking Heads epic ‘Stop Making Sense’ , the greatest (or worst?) films never made, an insight into one of wrestling’s greatest families & their excellent biopic ‘The Iron Claw’ and finally a celebration of the hero that is Brendan Fraser! True Crime Funnies by Jim Rugg - Rugg’s newest comic takes his usual energy and excellent design skills and mashes them up with true crime stories. There’s cops, wrestling, history and even Andy Warhol! B&W and 1986 Zines by Jim Rugg - These two zines are a celebration and look into Rugg’s interest in comics history and specifically the independent comics of the 80s & 90s. B&W has plenty of cool outlaw comics art and 1986 really dives deep into that year to share interesting anecdotes & advertisements, which I found very cool! My printed installation, Pockets of Time, made a homecoming to the Reading Room at the current exhibition, Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines, at @vanartgallery! Thank you to curators Siobhan McCracken Nixon @shivsterlondon and Julie Martin @julieontheseaside who invited me to participate. They coordinated this massive exhibition which involves many moving parts and sheets of papers. I am tremendously grateful for the preparatory team who made the install fun and seamless especially post-op (I am fine). I had the opportunity to work with my dear friend, fellow parent artist, Jessie McNeil @jessieavm. I think our chats about postpartum recovery may have scared off the other preps. LOL! Thank you Steve Wood @dr.balogne for the lift work and lights; I really enjoyed our chats about the 90s. On this mother’s day weekend, I feel fortunate to share this work with my 11 year old daughter. Going to the Vancouver Art Gallery is something we have done together since she was an infant. As she got a bit older, she would periodically ask me if my artwork would ever be shown at the gallery and I would answer,”Maybe one day…?” Being an artist parent isn’t easy, but I am hoping to demonstrate to her that anything is possible if you work hard and don’t give up. . . . I just found this from my notebook, written June 2022: “And a sway back towards zines, the absolute freedom I feel just looking at other people’s and contemplating my own, weaving words and memories and reflection and images. My head goes - what’s the plan though, how you go from that to a publishing deal, to reaching people, to it being life-changing. And of course I can’t fathom that out, and know in the deeper sense of myself that just doing it because I want to is enough. Let go of the how. How it will be … what? It is too limiting. Let myself be surprised. Let the lightbulb moments in, and the “weird, huh” connections and possibilities and opportunities. And let now, and me now, be enough.” I love it, love how it encapsulates the feeling of creative excitement that zine-making brings, and that it shows the ‘conversation’ I’m sure so many of us have with the doubting, fearful mind. Yesterday we had an amazing time at the Banned Book Fair organized by @browarddsa ! It was great connecting with many of the local artists, authors, and groups there. We showed up with a table full of free radical books and zines and left with over 90% of our inventory gone! We gave these books and zines away because mutual aid and popular education are core values of our collective. Being able to connect with so many folks from the community over our shared opposition of censorship and repression - and also our commitment to a freed and expansive education available to everyone was a beautiful opportunity that we are truly grateful for. Special shout-out to @haymarketbooks and @versobooks for donating literature to groups like us in Florida when the book banning began. To kick things off, let us introduce ourselves: Dr. Anne Pasek is the founder and Director of DIY Methods (as well as the affiliated Low Carbon Research Methods Group and Experimental Methods and Media Lab at Trent University). She’s an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersections of climate communication, the environmental humanities, and science and technology studies. My name is Sarah Rayner, and I’ve been co-organizing DIY Methods since 22’. I’m currently a PhD candidate in Cultural Studies at Trent University, with a primary interest in queer-feminist print cultures (including zine cultures!), art/visual activisms, media and popular culture, and affect studies.
