4 days till release day! I’m going to take this hard cover to the local library today. Not sure how that works, but hopefully all goes well with that. I have such a distinct memory of sitting down to write the version of this story that I finally stuck with to the end. Helen spun around, and found herself looking at a young gentleman, his face ashen and creased with cares. His eyes, while warmed in the dying light, seemed to look distant and careworn, and his whole frame appeared gaunt and weary. If it was not for the bowler, placed at a jaunty angle on his head, Helen might never have recognised him. “Mr Durston!” she gasped, unable to comprehend this new and strange Philip. “M-Miss N-Nethercott!” stammered Philip, lifting his bowler with an unsteady hand, “H-how-do-you-d-do?” Helen fled.’ It’s kind of hard to believe that this scene is less than half-way through Laughter at Withy Hill. I had no idea until I had the book in my hands! In some ways it’s the turning point, but in others it’s just the beginning of a long and rocky path to the climax and the end. Either way, I love the serenity of the description, and then the questions the dialogue brings. In a few words the stakes are changing and we go on into a completely new direction.
