Am torn on how to read #thenovatrilogy or #thecutuptrilogy by #williamsburroughs #wsb because I heard that the reading order should be: 1. The Soft Machine 2. Nova Express 3. The Ticket That Exploded ...instead of in order of the publication date: 1. The Soft Machine (1961) 2. The Ticket That Exploded (1962) 3. Nova Express (1964) Sometimes, there are those life decisions, and then there are *those* life decisions đŸ˜Ș #scifi #sciencefiction #vintagescifi #vintagesciencefiction #scificlassic #classicscifi #sciencefictionclassic #classicsciencefiction #scifireads #sciencefictionreads #scifibooks #sciencefictionbooks #scifinovels #sciencefictionnovels

Happy Favorite Friday everyone! This week's edition: Kurt Vonnegut! Not an author I see on Instagram, sadly, although I suppose I get it. He's got a wonky odd style, but I find it really appealing. He's a satirical science fiction writer, and I love the dark humor in his books. I first found Vonnegut in a science fiction class in college, and it was just the right books at the right time. He fought in WWII and was captured. His first big book, Slaughterhouse Five, is actually named for and deals with the slaughterhouse Vonnegut survived in during the bombing of Dresden. Vonnegut just has this great dark humor and social commentary I find so appealing. His anti-war stance was what helped to make him a popular author during the Vietnam War Era. "Dear future generations: Please accept our apologies. We were rolling drunk on petroleum." "1492. As children we were taught to memorize this year with pride and joy as the year people began living full and imaginative lives on the continent of North America. Actually, people had been living full and imaginative lives on the continent of North America for hundreds of years before that. 1492 was simply the year sea pirates began to rob, cheat, and kill them." "Why me? - That is a very Earthling question to ask, Mr. Pilgrim. Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything? Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen bugs trapped in amber? - Yes. - Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of this moment. There is no why." I still mean to get a "So it goes" tattoo someday. Anyway! If you're a dark humor kid and like it when it's applied to society, I highly recommend giving Kurt Vonnegut a try. Slaughterhouse Five is probably still my favorite. Do you enjoy deeper meanings in your book? Themes of social commentary, antiwar, or human nature? Beyond just the themes of coming of age, friendship, ect. 《》《》《》 #bookphotography #bookrecommendations #booksofinstagram #booksta #bookish #bookworm #bookaesthetic #sciencefiction #sciencefictionbooks #kurtvonnegut #slaughterfive #catscradle #galapagos #reading #readersofinstagram #ilovetoread #ilovebooks #scifi

T⭐G⭐I⭐F booksta fam! I’ve never been more excited for a Friday than after this week and the week before that LOL 😆 I’ve skipped out on my reading recs from fav followers this month since my TBR was so stacked for Galactic-thon, but I DID unhaul 4 books (even though I only needed to unhaul 3). I don’t keep a ton of romance or thriller on my shelves so I went straight to those to unhaul. I’m also sending my copies of Crescent City #1 and #2 to a new home because I have absolutely zero desire to read them and I don’t think that will change any time soon 🙂🙃. Sticking to my Sci-fi reads this weekend and FINISHING UP DARK AGE IF IT KILLS ME. I’m soooo close đŸ€žđŸŒ 😬😬 Weekend plans?

SCIENCE THRILLER . MICHAEL CRICHTON Congo Deep in the African rain forest, near the legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, an expedition of eight American geologists is mysteriously and brutally killed in a matter of minutes. Ten thousand miles away, Karen Ross, the Congo Project Supervisor, watches a gruesome video transmission of the aftermath: a camp destroyed, tents crushed and torn, equipment scattered in the mud alongside dead bodies — all motionless except for one moving image — a grainy, dark, man-shaped blur. In San Francisco, primatologist Peter Elliot works with Amy, a gorilla with an extraordinary vocabulary of 620 “signs,” the most ever learned by a primate, and she likes to fingerpaint. But recently, her behavior has been erratic and her drawings match, with stunning accuracy, the brittle pages of a Portuguese print dating back to 1642 . . . a drawing of an ancient lost city. A new expedition — along with Amy — is sent into the Congo where they enter a secret world, and the only way out may be through a horrifying death

Link in Bio! Hot off the press: we’ve just taken delivery of War Between Worlds, the concluding part in @stickland.andrew gripping and emotionally powerful ‘hard sci-fi’ trilogy for young adults, set in a version of solar system that our descendants may well inhabit 300 years from now. Pacey, imaginative and immensely believable, it follows on from The Arcadian Incident and Escape to Midas. The whole trilogy is a superb page-turner for teenagers and adults alike. If you order direct from us, we’ll give you all three books for the price of two. And UK p&p will be free. War Between Worlds isn’t officially out till August but if you order now you should get all three books well before that. #eyelightningbooks #andrewstickland #bookoffer #scifi #scifibooks #hardscifi #sciencefiction #sciencefictionbooks #indiepublisher #indiepublishersofinstagram #bookstagram

The Martian by Andy Weir is a brilliant sci-fi novel that was produced into a major motion picture in 2015. Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old 'human error' are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him? #blairacademy #timkenlibrary #bookstagram #librariesofinstagram #sciencefictionbooks

đŸ‘œtwo polish scifiđŸ‡”đŸ‡± **These are my first translated Polish scifi novels** -my Harrods goodies are from a dear friend yay! took me a while to open them but they were finished quickly, choco chips are my favourite- Solaris:a mysterious super cellular planet that attracts and drew inspirations from scientists&researchers alike possesses a living active ocean,an intelligent alien being that possesses consciousness. Story is kinda creepy and unsettling, quite different to the film, some parts are haunting and melancholic.Every person that lands in Solaris experience an unexplainable phenomenon, that is,the person that they were most attached to in the past whom are no longer living, visited them at the planet’s space station like uninvited ghosts. And they would NOT leave. They shadow them and acted as if they were truly the ones that were lost to them, they’re like bad dreams walking around and can’t die easily without brutal planning of disposal.Book is intriguing but ending was unsatisfying,it leaves so many questions unanswered but I really enjoyed it as it’s much more deeper than your average scifi novel. continue below for ROBOT đŸ€– #polishliterature #polishbook #polishbookstagram #polishscience #snerg #translatedbooks #translatedfiction #translatednovels #scifibooks #scifinovel #sciencefictionbooks #lem #stanislawlem #adamwisniewskisnerg

BROKEN: Arcadia Book 4 https://books2read.com/u/mdwwgZ?store=amazon “I love you. I always have. What else should I say?” The unmistakable sound of swallowed tears. “You’re already married to me. You don’t need to charm me. Why would you say such a thing?” Then another choked gasp. “I have to go. Leave me alone.” Then she swirled about and ran through the inner door, back into the unreal glitter of the fashion store, and all he could do was watch her leave, grief blocking his throat and coating his mind. “I can’t,” he whispered after her lingering scent. “I love you, my Anna. Always have, and always will.” And what if she needed him to let her go? Could he do that? For the first time, the reality of losing her hit him in a black wave of despair, rooting him to the spot until an annoyed robotic voice ordered him out of the entrance way. The door controls, released from whatever Anna had done, snapped the door half shut and half open as if brushing him outside. He turned and plodded down the steps and into the alley. #ScienceFiction #sciencefictionadventure #kindleunlimited #SFRomance #EcoSciFi #SFR #scifibooks #Kindle #sciencefictionbook #spaceopera #kindleunlimited #scifi #scifiadventure #scifiromance #sciencefictionbooks #newrelease #kindlebooks #spaceoperabook #sciencefictiongalactic #ecoscifiadventure #ecoscifi #romanticsciencefiction #romanticSciFi #scifisuspense #sfromancebooks

OUT NOW Omg, guys, I’m SO excited to be able to show you this book! Happy release day, @alina.schuettler and to Reyna, Levin and the rebels. ❀ It was a pleasure to work on bringing this book to English-speaking readers and I am actually very nervous about the reaction. I hope, you’ll love it! 😂 What is REYNA: LOST WORLD about? „We can’t stay here forever. If we want change, we have to be willing to make big changes ourselves and venture into the unknown.“ Delaville is the last city of humans after a plague turned most of them into zombies. The government's only hope are cyborgs – chosen graduates of the military academy who must give up their humanity to fight the enemy. None of them have ever returned. When Reyna's boyfriend Levin is chosen to be transformed, her world collapses. But Reyna doesn't give up so easily. To save Levin, she joins a group of rebels at the university, without realizing what she is setting in motion. --- #translatorsofintsagram #bookstagram #dystopia #sciencefictionbooks #dystopianbooks #zombies #cyborgs #dystopianromance #alinaschuttler #reynalostworld #ilovereading #indiebooklove #selfpublishing #selfpublisher #dystopiannovels

Guess who got some new books 📚 Well, they’re new to me. I absolutely love the library and I’m super grateful that I have the opportunity to read these books without serious financial outlay. I’m a member of one physical library, and access e-books and audio books from an additional two. I did have to request all of these as they’re all popular and multiple people want them. But I’m okay with waiting a little while for a book. the middle book of this trilogy slows down as it sets the scene for the final, but never slow enough to not want to know how it ends ✹✹ full review below There is a fair amount to lay out in this novel, so I can't really fault Timothy Zahn for how it occasionally became sluggish. There's political drama, blackmail, brainwashing and propaganda. Mara Jade is questioning just how much she truly hates Luke. Leia is pregnant (still). Everyone is looking for this mystical force of ships, lost somewhere out in the galaxy. So, yes, the middle gets tired. The set up is great, and if you push past those few chapters, the end of the book saves it all. The sheer fact that we bounce around so many different perspectives and yet it's still relatively easy to keep track of what's happening is truly a feat. Points of plot are dropped carefully throughout, leaving a keen reader able to pick up on what is going to happen sometimes before the characters are thanks to being able to see all of it. Overall, it's a good book. Not as good as the first one, but it hasn't dissuaded me from finishing the series. Talon Karrde is around lots, we get some Wedge appearances, and Mara Jade has evolved past simple anger as her character motivation. We love to see it.Thrawn, of course, steals the show with every page he is mentioned, but that's basically par for the course. #bookreview #bookstagram #bookish #book #starwars #starwarslegends #sciencefictionbooks

This year I planned on adventuring to the realm of science fiction & sadly, this is the only book I’ve managed to read so far. And it’s not because I didn’t try to look up more books in this genre, but it’s more like “my brain refuses to stick to any plan I make” sorta issue. Also because in a never happened before sorta way, I have consistently been falling ill every two weeks since 2024 started, and everyone knows you gotta have functioning brain cells to focus on certain genres, such as scifi. Rn, I’m just tired of being tired all the time (if that even makes sense). And I would also like to get rid of this “flu” that’s left me with 50 shades of green phlegm (tmi? ooops). Maybe subconsciously I started this insta page so that I can rant away to my heart’s content in these captions which I know no one will bother reading? 👀 ‱ ‱ ‱ ‱ ‱ ‱ ‱ #ramblings #thehush #sarafoster #sciencefictionbooks #scifibooks #dystopianthriller #thrillerbooks #dystopianbooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookish #bookworm #bookcommunity #imtiredofeverything

It was bound to happen—after tons and tons of impressions, the click-through rates on my Supersize Island ads were dropping off. Which meant...time for some new creative. First, I tried to rip myself off and do the same ad, featuring a giant parrot instead of bullfrog (second image). No dice—performance continued to decline. Apparently people like frogs more than parrots. But as it turns out, they like seals better than frogs. Now, I think we can all agree that cliches and puns are the lowest form of entertainment. But based on the click-through rate for the new ad (first image), the only exception is the rare cliche that is ALSO a pun. I give you the Jaws poster parody with seal double entendre. You are welcome. #scifi #sciencefictionbooks #sciencefiction #actionscifi #scifiaction #scifihumor

Who’s an author who you hope to read their entire backlist? Ever since my AP English teacher had us read the short story “Bloodchild,” I’ve loved Octavia E Butler!! Actually, that story creeped me out at first. But when I rediscovered her as an adult, I never recovered from the rabbit hole it sent me down ♄ I’m finishing her Xenogenesis series, and then I need to read her Patternmaster series. An acerbic, entertaining caper of evolution, gangsters, Darwin’s brain, and the Golden Age of Hollywood. When Sonya Orlova, a successful 1930s horror-film actress, crosses paths with a gorilla whose brain has been swapped for the frozen cerebrum of the late Charles Darwin, the two are inspired to write and produce evolution-themed monster movies—with Sonya in her greatest role, Korgora the Ape Woman! As this offbeat and controversial Hollywood series finds a devoted cult audience, Sonia’s relationship with her strange simian collaborator acquires an intensity neither could have imagined. Then disaster strikes, as zealous opponents to Darwin’s ideas contrive to put the Ape Woman out of business. By turns satiric and romantic, madcap and thoughtful, Behold the Ape is at once an outrĂ© love story, a tribute to classic monster movies, and a science-fictional celebration of that beleaguered institution we call public education. Day 9 #WriterFriendsChallenge: What helps you stay balanced in pursuit of writing goals? Ever watch a tightrope walker? They often carry a balance beam. They move the beam or their upper body to keep the lower part attached to the tightrope. They are constantly in motion. Same with skateboarders. They're moving all the time. Balance isn't a matter of arriving at a status quo and then staying there. For me, balance means constant vigilance, change, and ongoing motion, plus the shift of priorities as needed. And always—learning new things. #PietasFans #Reading #ScienceFiction #ScienceFictionBooks #SciFi #SciFiAuthor #SciFiBook #SciFiBooks #SciFiFantasy #SciFiGeek #SciFiNovel #SciFiWorld #SciFiWriter #SpaceOpera #Speculative @writer.friends.challenge Thank you @susanleighneedham for creating this challenge

3.75 stars I was pumped to read The Ministry of Time and have seen so much buzz about it lately. I found it interesting, well-researched, and lovely in parts but the back half was a bit too literary and esoteric for me. The set-up given by the publisher is only part of the story, and while all of it is true and very enjoyable, the author definitely tries to explore bigger themes and plot in the second half. That’s the part that went off the rails and became too chaotic for me. Did I not fully understand it or just not connect with what it was? Was the author trying to do too much or did it just go over my head? I guess I’ll never know. This book felt like a kookier but less successful and impactful Babel set in modern day. The fish out of water time traveler experiences, relationships, and found family aspects were the highlight for me. I liked it but didn’t love it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced review copy. The Ministry of Time released May 7th, 2024. Very accesible follow up to the Handmaid’s Tale portraying the inner workings and eventual downfall of Gilead. Read as apart of my finish the series challenge. We are following multiple POVs this time from other angles than that of the handmaid— which allowed for us to see the inner workings of Gilead and the perspective from outside the country. While this multi-POV allowed for bigger more political views, it also made for looser plotting and didnt hit quite as hard as the Handmaid’s Tale. The author could have dug deeper into the corruption, the underground and the brainwashing which would have made more of an impact. I would have liked to watch it come crumbling down a little bit more detailed but alas, we didnt get many details on the actual fall. Despite Atwood playing it safe in this book, it was still fantastic to return to this world. I dont understand the negative reviews stating “this book isnt needed” —- I found this book to be at least a small joy to my sense of justice to watch the fall of such a shocking world
 Would still recommend. #margaretatwood #thetestaments #dystopian #sciencefictionbooks #scifibooks #dystopiareads #booktubesff #secretsauceofstorycraft #finishtheseries #mustread #novel #modernfiction

In Ascension was a journey
For the first two sections, I had to remind myself this book is a work of fiction. It set such a beautiful tone giving background to Leigh and her family home life, and how she got into microbiology. But then it veered incredibly sci fi, almost too sci fi. As each section rolled along, we lost the human aspect to the story and it got very in the weeds of the science, the day to day of the lab and the structure of the space station and her training. It had so much potential but it was almost too scientific for me. If you’re super into sci fi and biology, this one’s definitely going to peak your interest. There were points where I loved the story, and the writing was intriguing. The idea of a future world where science is focused on saving planet earth is an important perspective. But it wasn’t quite there for me. I felt very detached from the characters and I couldn’t make a connection to Leigh until the very end. The last section brought it together for me, this book really did its best work in the human connections, but those were few and far between scattered throughout the chapters. All in all, I thought the author making the case that we are bigger than the earth and that we must preserve it came across and that message is beautiful. This book won’t be for everyone, it happens!

‱ thursday spotlight ‱ I know my page mostly features fantasy and romance books, but I wanted to give the spotlight today to a sci-fi author that I read while I was in college that evolved my love for reading. đŸ€âœš I read Station Eleven during the pandemic when I was completing my English degree on Zoom and it changed my brain chemistry, I swear. Emily St. John Mandel is phenomenal at creating beautiful stories within stories that all tie together even through decades and pandemics and even planets. Station Eleven is one of my absolute favorite books, not only because of the Shakespeare influences, but also because even though the world stops, the performers know the show must always go on. It really shows the necessity of art in our lives, especially when navigating the darkest of times. đŸ€ I read Sea of Tranquility just last year and loved the similar pandemic elements but with a much heavier science fiction vibe. If y’all like sci-fi or want to get into it, I think Emily St. John Mandel is an amazing author to start with! 🌙 Have you read any of her books? What are your thoughts on pandemic novels?

Thanks to @orendabooks and @writerdougj I was fortunate enough to be invited to a read along for the first two books in the Enceladon trilogy. Fast paced, the story is centred around first contact with an alien species hailing from a moon orbiting Saturn. Connecting three very different people on the night of their arrival, the first book is a rollercoaster ride across the wilds of Scotland. Lennox, a troubled teen, Ava, a pregnant woman on the run, and Heather, a grieving mother, all find themselves drawn to each other and the creature found on a beach. Determined to protect it the trio end up on the run as they try to avoid the police, an abusive husband and a nefarious government agency. Whilst the second book’s premise would give away a fair few spoilers, it’s enough to say that both stories take on some heavy social commentary about “otherness”, human destructiveness and the post truth world in which we live. Written with an easy, open style and fairly science light, both books are enjoyable adventures full of action and optimism. I’ve reviewed both over on my blog should you want to know more. What was your last read? #bookreview #scifibooks

Book review: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Engineering Infinity is a hard science fiction anthology edited by Jonathan Strahan. In Strahan’s introduction to the collection he asks the question “what is hard science fiction?” in a preface to tell the reader that he doesn’t quite know how to define hard scifi so be forewarned if some of the stories don’t conform to the scientific rigor one would expect from a collection such as this. And indeed there are a few stories here that I wouldn’t quite classify as hard scifi and they even venture into the realm of fantasy. Overall though, I enjoyed most of the stories, even if they didn’t all meet my own standard for hard science fiction. This anthology boasts hard scifi authors such as Stephen Baxter, Gregory Benford, Peter Watts, and Charles Stross, and also includes many well known short story authors such as Kristin Kathryn Rusch and Robert Reed. The collection included fourteen stories in all. The concepts presented include robotics and sentience, genetic engineering, inventing new ways of leaving Earth’s orbit, alien invasion, interstellar travel and the resources needed for such a journey, time travel, entertainment windows and the question of reality, a futuristic war, and the ingenuity of nature to find balance. My favorite story was the final story in the anthology, The Birds and the Bees and the Gasoline Trees by John Barnes. A very creative and unique story involving genetic engineering and nature with an ending I wasn’t expecting. Aside from a couple stories, this is a good collection for fans of hard scifi and anyone who is looking for some bite sized stories that present a challenging and thought-provoking view of the universe.

An engrossing tale that makes one question everything from their daily routine to their existence. 📍Book Review ~ Shray’s Cosmic Encounter: A Novella Beyond Worlds By Shubhangi Khamkar (@shray_stwert) đŸ™â€â™€ïžINSIGHT: Meet Shray, a simple girl living a simple life in a simple town. All that, however, changes once she enters the town of Alora. Her experiences make her wonder about the extremities of the Universe and consequences of small acts. đŸ™â€â™€ïžREVIEW: The storyline thought out by the author is really creative and unique. All the different characters and their interactions keep one interested. While wandering around spiritual questions of existence, one also gets a taste of science fiction which makes the book all the more wholesome. Even though some of the grammatical and punctuation errors may deviate one from the intended change of dialogue between the characters or the meaning as a whole, the mind-blowing storyline manages to top that. The cover and title are also well suited to the story. Overall, the book is a good read and will keep the readers engaged with the twists and turns it provides. đŸ™â€â™€ïžSTRENGTH: 1. The story had a fast pace throughout and kept me hooked. 2. The sci-fi angle given to the storyline proved to be another plus point. 3. The writing suggests story build-up and commends the author’s potential. 4. The language used by the author was beginner friendly. đŸ™â€â™€ïžWEAKNESS: 1. The sentences were sometimes too wordy and were made complex, making it difficult for the meaning to be understood. 2. Mild grammatical and spelling errors. 3. The exit of some characters within the story was quite abrupt. đŸ™â€â™€ïžAGE GROUP : 13+ đŸ™â€â™€ïžTARGET READERS : Anyone who wishes to indulge in a quick read and have something to take back after the reading experience. đŸ™â€â™€ïžGENRE: Science Fiction đŸ™â€â™€ïžRATING: 4/5 #sciencefictionbooks #questioneverything #ShraysCosmicEncounter #sciencefictionnovel #shubhangikhamkar #bookreviewersofinstagram #kitabikeeda
