“I discovered that being an artist is actually trauma therapy work, very often. This book that I’m writing ended up being another exercise that my therapist and myself could use for healing.” - Billy Porter to GLAAD’s Head of Talent I’ve read this memoir myself and with Bibliotherapy clients several times. I can never put this memoir down. If empowerment and relentless self-compassion and love were a person, it would be Billy Porter. Is ‘Unprotected’ on your radar? If you haven’t yet read this memoir, I highly recommend! Also, Pride Month is upon us and while we read queer all year here at LiterapyNYC, I’ve got some goodies in tomorrow’s newsletter that you don’t want to miss! F M C ‘ S ❀ F R I D A Y I was tagged by @explore_fictions to share covers that have strong female main characters on them; however, most of my favorite heroines aren’t on the covers of my favorite books so I just changed this to a strong FMC post in general. My favorite FMC’s are probably a tie between these three women: ❀ Oraya from Serpent and the Wings of Night Oraya might the only FMC that never irritated me. All of the decisions she made, I would have also made. This almost never happens. ❀ Macy from Love and Other Words I’ve said it so much on my page, but I’ll say it again Macy is me, I am Macy. She & I had similar (not exact) traumas in life and I just related to how she handle everything in the book (albeit not the best way of handling it). I just really related to her so much. ❀ Lizzy from Pride & Prejudice I remember relating to Lizzy so much as a teenager. The stubbornness 🤪 QOTD: Who is one of your favorite FMCs and why? #fmc #fmcbook #fantasycharacter #fantasybook #booksilove #booksaremyjam #booksforever #foreverreading #readingallthetime #booksbooks #favoritebooks #booksfordays #prideandprejudice #loveandotherwords

Happy Publication Week to Jenna Lo Bianco’s delicious second novel, Love & Rome. If you’re not hungry when you start reading, you will be ravenous by the time you finish. Stella Chiaro has set herself a deadline, if she hasn’t secured a job in the art world by April 2nd, then she will leave Rome and fly home to Melbourne for good. The last thing she needs right now is romantic distractions, but with a good looking new flatmate and the sweet owner of the new local bar appearing in her life, will she repeat the patterns she has vowed to leave in her past? I adored this book which transported me straight to the cobblestoned streets of Rome with all its history, beauty and tasty delights. I loved reading about Stella and her flatmate Marcella. Their beautiful friendship was aspirational and their teasing and joking was often hilarious. Marcella is the kind of loyal and loving friend every woman needs in her life. Although, there were a couple of more serious issues touched on including betrayal and controlling relationships, overall this was a joyful and uplifting read which left me grinning from ear to ear. If you’re looking for a fun and flirty romance with the added bonus of an Italian setting and plenty of Italian food then you absolutely must pick up Love & Rome. Thank you so much to @macmillanaus and @the.italian.teacher for a #gifted copy of this gorgeous book for review. ❓ Have you visited Italy? Let’s Pretend This Will Work by Maddie Dawson ⭐⭐⭐💫 I got lost in this story and not in a good way. Not that there was so much going on, but I just found my brain wandering and I couldn’t concentrate on the story at hand. Mimi Perkins falls in love with Ren Yardley, a fellow drama teacher at a private school in NYC. When his ex-wife has a stroke, they both move to New Haven, CT. Not together though, Ren moves back in with his two daughters and his ex-wife. Ren’s and his daughter’s selfish behavior throughout the entire story was dreadful. Mimi was a doormat and annoyed me as a MC. The writing style was intriguing, but the constant character study left for very little action. There were a few plot twists, but overall, I could have left this one alone. QOTD: How much time do you usually spend reading in a day / week? 📣QOTD: Do you have a favorite Inquisitor?📣 Star Wars loves their Inquisitors but when I thought about it I realized that they only appear in three books. Ahsoka features The Sixth Brother, Jedi Battle Scars has The Fifth Brother, and of course Rise of the Red Blade has several Inquisitors and is the novel that features them the most. Claire Kent is one of my fav MF romance authors and she did not disappoint in this new dystopian release!! I love when the MMC praises the FMC in bed so picked this as one of my fav quotes 😘 really nice spice in this one and a cool dystopian world that Ms. Kent continues to develop from earlier in the series. It is actually the seventh book in her "Kindled" series but can be read as a standalone. Highly recommend any in the series, especially this one, "Haven" and "Citadel." Also LOVED the book she first developed this world in (not part of the series) called "Last Light." 🍂 S A T U R D A Y 🍂 It seems Instagram is in a weird slump right now. Everyone is in the same boat. Instagram has changed the algorithm and killed hashtags. I’m tempted to stop tagging my posts and reels, but it’s become a habit. The way things are has totally killed my excitement of posting photos and reels. If this is their way of begging money from you to pay for boosts and sponsored ads, I’m not falling for it. In a lighter note, I’ve added another book to my TBR. 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑖𝑥𝑜𝑛 𝑅𝑢𝑙𝑒 by Elle Kennedy. And of course I’ll make a decision of what I think it … after I finish all 496 pages. Currently though, there is a lengthy queue of books waiting to be read. COMING SOON!! NEW NEBRASKA HEAT: Among the fangs, claws, and haphazard magic of New Omaha, Serenity, a plucky and resilient human, struggles with memories of her horrendous past. Sold to a vampire feeding den at just fifteen, she suffered years of imprisonment, prey to the cruelest bloodsuckers in New Nebraska. Cast out onto the unforgiving streets when she’s deemed too old to be food, Serenity is dead set on leaving New Nebraska until four paranormal males give her tempting reasons to stay... This is the premise of my second why choose romance, set in the same world as the first, and I can't wait to hear what readers think 🥰 It's taking me longer than I'd hoped to finish it up, but it will definitely be out later this year. #bookstagram #booknerd #spicybooks #reverseharembooks #rhbooks #pnrbooks #whychoosebooks #readersofinstagram #ilovereading #readersgonnaread #readingallthetime #instabooks

Repost from @sarahs.bookish.reviews • ✨Book Tour✨ Some Doubt About It By: Marion McNabb Pub Date: May 7, 2024 ✨About The Book: Caroline Beckett is living the dream. A self-help guru with a glamorous clientele and a marriage to a handsome photographer, she’s proof women really can have it all. But one night leaves Caroline reeling, forcing her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about her life―and what (if any) business she has teaching anyone how to live theirs. Retired professor Devorah Van Buren is spending her time getting herself and her chihuahua, Mary Magdalene, kicked out of local restaurants for causing scenes with tourists. When she learns about Caroline’s rise to success and the personal scandal that’s followed, Devorah has a new purpose: sue her former student for stealing the ideas that made Caroline famous. Back in her hometown to handle this new problem, Caroline is surprised to find reconnections with not only Devorah but her high school sweetheart too. After the way her life fell apart, Caroline is beginning to wonder if, with Devorah’s help, maybe she can build something better. ✨Review I really enjoyed this one. It dealt a lot with consequences and forgiveness. I loved that it followed a life coach whose world was falling apart. I think that Caroline did a good job handling her current problems as well as when her decisions from the past came to haunt her. The dual POV was a good way to see both sides of the argument and I loved getting to know both Caroline and Devorah. Is it possible to be both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time? It took some turns I was not expecting but I also liked how Caroline handled the situation towards the end. It was hard to put down. Thank you @mcnabbmarion and @suzyapprovedbooktours for the gifted copy. #QOTD What are your plans this weekend? #somedoubtaboutit #booktour #tgif #bookcover #booknerd #bookgeek #neverendingtbr #readwithme #readersgonnaread #allthebooks #readingallthetime #lovetoreadbooks

Repost from @marilynjgon • This is another fun read for summer. Devorah is suing her assistant from years ago for stealing her “idea”. Caroline is a sought out successful self help coach. She is living her best life until it crumbles. So she packs up and returns to her home town. She’s at a point where she is questioning herself and her life decisions having to deal with her cheating husband and Devorah. So this story has humor, drama, romance, self reflection . It is witty and emotional and I loved it. Thank you @suzyapprovedbookours and @mcnabbmarion for the gifted copy. ✨ Caroline Beckett is living the dream.

"In the end, everyone's heart will be weighed." ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Neferura is the daughter of Pharaoh Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut however shares power with her stepson, Thutmose III. When Thutmose starts to love against her mother, wanting all the power for himself, Neferura's life is turned upside down. Both the princess and those she loves are in danger. Neferura must risk everything to save herself. I love Ancient Egypt. I have been fascinated by their history since I was a kid. This book really captured the grandeur of the New Kingdom period. The depictions of the temples and palace were beautiful. Neferura was a priestess of Amun. The rituals and beliefs surrounding the deities were well explained. She was a very likeable, strong character. All the characters were well done. Thutmose was thoroughly unpleasant, a power grabbing, unkind man. The wise woman and her intricate web were intriguing. Hatshepsut though was the standout character for me. Historically, she was one of the longest reigning female pharaohs. In this book, she was ruthless. I did not like her as a person, but she was written incredibly well and her actions surprised me at times. I did find the ending a bit abrupt. I found I was left with a few unanswered questions and would have liked a couple more pages tying up some loose ends. Overall though this was a great piece of historical fiction exploring one of my favourite areas of history. Familiar story, new perspective. James by Percival Everett was a faced paced, lovingly written retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. I loved this fresh take. This prose gave such vivid perspective in Jim on this wild journey that we are all so familiar with. Code switching and language were key in the writing and made it all come alive. I love a great reimagining and this delievered! Author Spotlight featuring >> 𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕜 𝕋𝕠𝕨𝕤𝕖 Mark Towse (@towseywrites) is an English horror writer living in Australia. He would sell his soul to the devil or anyone buying if it meant he could write full-time (any contacts from the netherworld would be appreciated). He's written 185 short stories and 15 novellas (Nana, Gone to the Dogs, Arcranium, The Bucket List, Mischief Night, Crows, etc.), but Chasing The Dragon is his debut novel, a dark concoction of all the genres he's touched on to date: horror, thriller, romance, crime, fantasy, and mystery, with the staple thread of 'Towsey' humour to lighten the load. You can find this and all of his work on Amazon. The Books >> 𝕹𝖆𝖚𝖌𝖍𝖙𝖞 𝕮𝖔𝖗𝖓𝖊𝖗 Three uniquely fresh novellas in one collection, including Towse's wildest old-people horror yet, 'The Generation Games.' Also includes 'The Naughty Corner', a gated community full of dark secrets, and 'My Name is Brian', a small-town coming-of-age horror on steroids. 'The Naughty Corner was another impossible-to-put-down read from Mark Towse!' 𝕮𝖍𝖆𝖘𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕯𝖗𝖆𝖌𝖔𝖓 A town on its knees, dread's bony fingers wrapping around its throat and squeezing, death rattles soon to follow. Drugs, filth, and a lack of human decency are starving it of hope. Introducing Simon Dooley, our trauma-driven wannabe superhero, the relentless voice of his dead mother pleading with him to "end the chaos." Dressed in a leotard and armed only with a dozen dog poop bags, Simon's plight will find him falling in love and going head-to-head with the seediest characters walking the streets. The town needed a hero... it got Reformo. 'By far my favorite read of 2024! Chasing the Dragon contains a bit of everything that I love to read. I love Reformo. The Red Grove by Tessa Fontaine ⭐⭐⭐💫 I wanted more from this book, it was partially there, but didn’t fully deliver the emotional aspect. The Red Grove is a society in the forest where women can go to be away from men who harm them. The narration by Erin Moon was fantastic and she did a great job portraying the different timelines and different POVs. The storyline was easy to follow, and it was well written. As much as I wished there was more emotion in the story, I did think that each of the characters were well developed. The ending I thought was just OK but could have been better. 📚Book Review!📚 The overall score for the series is 3 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed the first 2 books but really struggled to get through the last 4 😅😬 A 17 year old with super powers befriends other people with super powers and they take over their government that took over the world. Juliette also has tons of teenage relationship drama and learned about her past. I don't get the hype about Aaron Warner. He's not that great 😅😬 Kenji was definitely the best! I feel like I would have really enjoyed the series when I was 14, but at 31 year old, it just didn't do it for me 😅 #booksofinstagram #booklover #bibliophile #bookreviewer #readingallthetime #readingislife #bookishcommunity #booksbooksbooks #shattermeseries #bookreview #fantasybooks #dystopian

Greenwood by Michael Christie  I’m not quite sure how this book came to my attention but it’s been on my TBR for years, probably since it came out in 2019. I just knew that this was a book for me. It’s a family saga that spans decades, and its structure is integral to the way the story unfolds.  The family at the center of this novel, the Greenwoods, are intertwined in various ways with the trees that were once the center of a massive timber empire. The story begins in 2038, winds its way back through the generations to 1934, to the beginnings of this family story and their connection with the trees; it’s as if we’ve traveled from the outer bark of a tree stump through the rings to the center. Then, the author guides us back through the rings moving forward in time again until we’re back in 2038 and have collected all the pieces of the story needed to understand how it all fits together.  This story is interesting, informative, and filled with intrigue. There are gasp-inducing moments, characters you’ll root for and those you’ll despise, and plot developments that will make you feel sad, triumphant, angry, worried, or hopeful. This is a story with a little of everything for almost any reader. It’s a longer book at 500 pages, but it contains a propulsive plot and prose that pulls you through so you can find out how everything fits together and how it all will end. I loved it.  Have you read this one? I love a book with an interesting structure…do you?  #bookstagram #bookish #bookreview #greenwood #readbigbooks #ilovebigbooks #familysaga #readingallthetime #justkeepreading

🌻 We all want impossible things by Catherine Newman A beautiful story about a terrible theme. Heartbreaking but so worth the read! "Edi and Ash have been best friends for over forty years, a bond formed by a lifetime of memories. Since childhood they have seen each other through life's milestones: stealing vodka from their parents, REM concerts, unexpected Scottish wakes, marriages, infertility, children. As Ash notes, "Edi's memory is like the back-up hard drive for mine." When Edi is diagnosed with the final stages of terminal ovarian cancer, she makes the painstaking decision to leave behind her husband and son to move to a hospice down the road from Ash. Fierce and loving, Ash's world reshapes around the rhythms of Edi's palliative care, from chipped ice and watermelon cubes to music therapy; from inadvisable Pringle-consumption to impromptu excursions out into the frozen Massachusetts winter night." #weallwantimpossiblethings #catherinenewman #catherinenewmanauthor #bookirecommend #greatbook #sadbooks #booksworthreading #readinggoodbooks #booksaboutfriendship #booksaboutillness #booksaboutloss #booksaboutlove #booksaboutlife #booksaboutfamily #bookstagram #bookreader #bookaddict #booksbooksandmorebooks #readingismyhappyplace #readingalotofbooks #readingallthetime #readingpeople #readerslife #readersofinstagram #reader #ilovetoread #ilovebooks

All rhodes lead here by Mariana Zapata was a sweet, quiet romance that felt real! 💖 Like other Mariana Zapata books, this one is a super slow burn which I actually enjoy! ✨ I really liked that Aurora( FMC) and Rhodes (MMC) became friends first and I appreciated how their friendship developed and then became something more. There was so much emotion in this book and I really loved the personal journey Aurora went on. Rhodes was so grumpy but also so so protective and I really liked how he was trying his best to be there for Aurora. There are some really tender moments, and a lot of funny banter between the characters. Some of the scenarios were hilarious and I was very amused with them. 🤭☺️ Amos is the most adorable kid ever, the portrayal of the teenage awkwardness is spot on. This book ended up being perfect! 🤌✨ #romancerecs #romancereader #romancereccomendation

A journey with my reading journals… I started keeping track of my reading (in a very simple way) sometime in 2009. At the time I had 4 kids - ages 2-12. I felt like I was hardly reading, and I didn’t feel at all like myself. I remembered a trick I used when my first child was a baby. Instead of keeping “to-do” lists which always felt futile, I kept lists of things I did after I’d done them. It helped me see that I was accomplishing things when I thought I wasn’t doing anything besides holding my very needy baby (important, yes, but also disheartening).  So I decided to keep a list of what I read so I could see that I actually was reading, even when it felt like I wasn’t. Back then it was literally just a list of books and authors on a random piece of paper. From sometime partway through 2009 to the end of 2010 I read 44 books. Some were middle grade books for our homeschooling and for a kids’ book club I was leading and some were YA books I was reading with my young teen. Several were parenting books. But that was also when I read The Thirteenth Tale - a real path back to reading for me. I also read The Guernsey Literary ... Society, The Kite Runner, a couple of Jodi Picoult books and a couple of Elizabeth Berg books. It was a good stretch of reading. I was getting my reading mojo back. In 2011 I got a little notebook (the teal one with navy/white polka dots) and started keeping lists in there. I noted if a book was for school or personal reasons, if it was nonfiction, if it was a MG/YA book. Another good reading year (I discovered Kate Morton!). From there it took off…my lists and notations got more involved and detailed and when I finished that journal I bought a Leuchtturm (thanks @annebogel !), added more in the way of decoration (washi tape, markers), and began tracking even more aspects of my reading life.  At one point I tried out Goodreads, but didn't love it. I was thrilled when @thestorygraph was created and have loved that ever since. (I still keep a physical reading journal, too.) I recently realized that I never added my pre-2018 reading to Storygraph, so I added those to my Storygraph, and... (continued in comments)

Do you have that friend you text and they either never text back or it takes them 3 weeks and they end up apologizing because they thought they messaged back immediately but it turns out you were in drafts the whole time?? Hi! That's me! 🤣 Only I also do it with my insta posts. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Ahem. Anyways. Two years ago now scrolling through NetGalley @cjconnollybooks had her first novel as Read Now. It looked so interesting I snagged it and immediately devoured it. And her next one. Now this one. She is an author I'm honestly surprised I don't see talked about or recommended more often. She takes real life issues and questions such as: "Did I make the right choice?" and turns them into magically realistic love stories that are so damn good this is her third book and it's still just as magical as the first! As soon as I'm done I'll post the full review, but so far omg! I'm still in love with her writing! Just as much as the first time I picked up her first novel.
