Just had a fascinating visit from one of our Freemen, Paul, who presented the archive with this amazing #apprenticeshipindenture from 1868. It records the apprenticeship of Jasper Rowley to the firm of John Haddon & Co, one of the leading printing businesses of its day. Paul also conducted extensive research on Rowley, discovering that, once trained, Rowley went on to become partner in his own printing firm. He described himself as ‘Stationer’ in successive censuses, which also chronicle his growing family, who kept the business in the Rowley name after his death. Paul’s own history is no less interesting: he was apprenticed with the firm Daniel Greenaway & Sons, City printers, in the 1960s. The Greenaways were eminent members of the @StationersCompany, providing no less than 4 Masters (highest rank in #londonliverycompanies). Paul’s memories of his boss, Sir Derek Greenaway, include him presenting each worker with a #christmasturkey each year! Although Paul mostly worked in I.T., after retiring he returned to his earlier interests by becoming a lecturer in #letterpressprinting at @frogmorepapermill. This gave him a whole new perspective on the #archivetreasures we showed him: he knew so much about #printingtechniques and #papermaking that he picked up on details I was completely unaware of! #printhistory @liveries_of_london

🇬🇧 One of the most challenging projects in my career, due to its immense scale and the level of responsibility I had as a producer and researcher, was a documentary film about the 150 years of a family-owned company in my country. 🎥 One of my enormous tasks was gathering archival material from that time period 🤯. It was also a thrilling mission. 🧐🕵️♀️🖤 Although it is a fascinating narrative depicting the industrial awakening in Latin America, it is a private video. 🔐 It was created exclusively for the descendants of the protagonists, who, for security reasons, prefer not to publicly expose the details of their family history. This is special, and we're very grateful to the researcher who unearthed it! Our researcher (who prefers to remain anonymous) writes: 'While working on Pusey House's Henry Liddon papers I stumbled across a letter from Christian F. Cole. In 1876 Cole became the first black African to take a BA from Oxford and subsequently became a member of @oxford_uni. There are only a few known examples of Cole's handwriting and personal papers, so this is an exciting find.' We're delighted to have something from such an important figure in Oxford's history. This must be one of the most (if not the most?) beautiful title pages at Pusey House! Fully hand-drawn and hand-coloured, it comes from the Declaration Book of the London Province of the Guild of St Alban the Martyr. Though it looks medieval, it actually dates from the 19th century, when the Guild was set up by Shirley Fielding Palmer as a support network for Anglo-Catholic laypeople. New members in London had to sign this book upon joining. Elisabeth Taylor Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor DBE (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011) was a British and American actress. She began her career as a child actress in the early 1940s and was one of the most popular stars of classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950s. She then became the world's highest paid movie star in the 1960s, remaining a well-known public figure for the rest of her life. In 1999, the American Film Institute named her the seventh-greatest female screen legend of Classic Hollywood cinema. Born in London to socially prominent American parents, Taylor moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1939. She made her acting debut with a minor role in the Universal Pictures film There's One Born Every Minute (1942), but the studio ended her contract after a year. She was then signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and became a popular teen star after appearing in National Velvet (1944). She transitioned to mature roles in the 1950s, when she starred in the comedy Father of the Bride (1950) and received critical acclaim for her performance in the drama A Place in the Sun (1951). Despite being one of MGM's most bankable stars, Taylor wished to end her career in the early 1950s. She resented the studio's control and disliked many of the films to which she was assigned. She began receiving more enjoyable roles in the mid-1950s, beginning with the epic drama Giant (1956), and starred in several critically and commercially successful films in the following years. These included two film adaptations of plays by Tennessee Williams: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and Suddenly, Last Summer (1959); Taylor won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for the latter.
