"What's your name? Mine's Abigail." Vampy Varnish - It's official, my Abigail portrait has been varnished, it is well and truly completed. ✨ 🧛🏻♀️🩰 Before varnishing I added a tiny bit more colour to Abigail's forehead. I wish I added a touch more to her right eye, but I'm still a lot happier with it overall. When it came to actually adding the varnish, it was so bloody satisfying. The portrait has a strong contrast between light and dark, and the varnish did what it was meant to, and emphasized this contrast. I'm happy at how well that I've managed to capture this pop. A Creative Insight - My Abigail painting is done. Now it's time for me to share a brief insight into my creative processes that I used in the making of it. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 The thing that I had to do is decide what image to base my painting on. I had several possible references, but I ultimately decided to base my portrait on the scene in which Abigail first reveals her vampiric nature. I chose this image because it's one of the more impactful scenes in the movie. I love the intensity of it, and thought it would fit in well with the others in my Women Of Horror series. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 Mapping it out was really easy, as the basic framework is fairly straightforward, the hard work would come when it came to refining the detail. I enjoyed this stage, and thought although it was looking very rough, it was looking pretty good. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 When it came to building up and refining the details of Abigail's face, I started with her eyes and worked outwardly from there. As there is a fluorescent hue in the reference pic, I struggled with the colour balance. My colour blind eyes struggled to find the right mix of yellow and pink. It took me many attempts, and lots of hugs layers, to get not only the colour balance correct, but the subtle blends as smooth as possible. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 The hardest part of this portrait was painting Abigail fleece jacket. I spent ages mapping out the details, trying to get every crease and fold as accurate as I could get in. Then I have to go over it with dozens of washes to smooth and blend some of the details, as well as once again trying to get the colour balance right. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 I certainly experience some trouble whilst working on my Abigail portrait, the colour being the biggest, but overall I really enjoyed myself. I present to my completed portrait of Abigail, as portrayed by Alisha Weir in 2024's 'Abigail'. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 As I've said before, after seeing Abigail at the cinema recently, loving the film, and being super impressed by Weir's phenomenal performance, I knew I had to make her part of my Women Of Horror series. After enjoying working on it, and seeing the final outcome, I'm glad I did. Things didn't go super smoothly, but I enjoyed myself for the most part. I wasn't expecting this piece to take as long as it did, I experienced some difficulties whilst working on it. Besides a killer migraine, and having my attention drawn elsewhere, the biggest problem I had was getting the colour as accurate as I could. As there's a Warm fluorescent hue in the scene/reference pic, my colour blind eyes struggled to find the balance between the yellow are pink. It's definitely not perfect, but it certainly the best that I could do. I also feel I may have made the eyes a touch too dark, but I think the increased contrast adds to the intensity of the image. So yeah, it's not much best work, not by a long shot, but I'm still really happy with the final outcome. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 I'm not sure what I'm painting next. I present to you my completed portrait of Regine Dandrige, the enchanting villain out for blood, portrayed by the beautiful Julie Carmen in Fright Night Part II. 🧛♀️🦇 As I said when I started this piece, I think that Fright Night Part 2 is a severely underrated sequel, and that Regine Dandrige is a great villain; every bit as charming and vicious as her brother Jerry was. I'm glad to have her as part of my Women Of Horror series. Also, now that her portrait is done, I'm sure that I made the right choice using this image. 🧛♀️🦇 From start to finish, this was a really fun and straightforward piece to work on. It took a few layers to get the skin tones right, but I didn't seem to experience any of my usual troubles. The skin tones look pretty good, or at least they do to my eyes. Everything went smoothly when working on this piece; i got through it quicker than I thought. If I hadn't felt like utter crap the past few days, I would have been done even sooner. 🧛♀️🦇 I'm really happy with how Regine's portrait has turned out. I like playing with my food." - Abigail Painting Update - Progress on my painting of Abigail is, though behind schedule, going rather well. 🧛🏻♀️🩰 I was expecting to have this piece finished by now, but for one reason or another, I'm a little bit behind schedule. "I'm sorry about what's gonna happen to you." - Abigail Painting Update - Breaking from my figure studies for a bit, I'm back working on my Women Of Horror series. This one is based upon Abigail, portrayed by Alisha Weir in the 2024 horror hit 'Abigail'. Abigail is a film directed by Radio Silence (Ready Or Not, Scream VI), which sees an eclectic group of criminals kidnap 12 year old Abigail (Alisha Weir). They're told by their contact that they need to babysit the young ballerina for 24 hours; holding her for a sizable ransom. Unfortunately for them, they soon realise that Abigail is a bloody thirsty vampire. This film was so freaking good. It's fun, gory, and suspenseful. Despite the twist of Abigail being a vampire being used in the marketing, you can almost forget about it because Weir's helpless child act at the start of the film is so natural and convincing. Then when she reveals her true nature, WOW, she is bloody vicious, cold and calculating, and has a wicked sense of humour. She's got such a strong presence for such a young actress, you' have no trouble believing she's hundreds of years old. I was so impressed by Weir's phenomenal performance, I felt compelled to paint her portrait. I decided to base my portrait on the scene in which she reveals her true nature. I just veracity seen on her face, and thought it would fit in well with the others in the series. To celebrate the anniversary of its release, I'm reposting my portrait of the series' original killer, Mrs Voorhees, portrayed by Betsy Palmer. “Did you know a young boy drowned the year before those two others were killed? The counselors weren't paying any attention... They were making love while that young boy drowned. His name was Jason. I was working the day that it happened. Preparing meals... here. I was the cook. Jason should've been watched. Every minute. He was... he wasn't a very good swimmer." - Mrs Voorhees Title: Mother (Friday The 13th, 1980) Size: 8 x 10 inches (approx.) Medium: Acrylic Paint On Canvas. This was a challenging yet fun piece to work on. It was fairly straightforward, but a tad more complex than I thought to get done. 🔪🏕️ I started by blocking in Pamela's face with some basic colour and tone. The idea was to get to basic sculpting done, and then refine it afterwards. I thought I could get the face done in one session, but because of the bold lighting, there is a lot of texture that took a while to build up properly. I also struggled with the colour too. I found myself going back to it several times after I had "finished" for the day, adding dozens of layers and washes to try and refine it as much as I could. 🔪🏕️ Once the face was as good as I was gonna get it, I began painting Pamela's hair. Again, this was straightforward but quite time consuming. I added a thin wash of golden brown so I could better map out the strands of hair. I then painted the strands with shades of browns, yellows, and blues. I added highlights and lowlights to better define them. Sexy Shiny Goodness - Apologies for the Elvira spam, but my Elvira portrait has now been varnished. The Mistress Of The Dark is now officially completed. ⚰️🦇 I don't think I'm quite over my pre-christmas varnishing mishap; I was so nervous about doing this, and was expecting something to go wrong. Thankfully it didn't. The varnishing went quite well. However, disappointingly, I didn't quite manage to capture as big of a pop as I would have liked. I think I may have angled my spotlights incorrectly. It wasn't a total loss though. It looks nice as the varnish glides over her dress, and brings it into focus. Behind The Scenes - A brief insight into the creative processes used in the making of my Elvira painting. ⚰️🦇 The journey begins with the line work. This was pretty straightforward, as the framework for this piece is pretty simple. I then blocked in a few bits to give me a stronger foundation to build upon. ⚰️🦇 The first arena I gave my attention to was Elvira's face. This is where it first started to become a little less and a bit more frustrating. The painting is only 8 x 10 inches, and the face only takes up a very small frustration of that. Trying to get her features as crisp as possible took many attempts. ⚰️🦇 For the dress, I used washes of ultramarine blue to liven it up from a flat black/grey. I then used a touch of cerulean blue to pick out some of the creases, and make it look more rounded. The hardest and most frustrating part of painting her body was her legs. My colour blind eyes struggled with the subtle blends of pink and blue. It took many attempts, and I still don't think I got it right. ⚰️🦇 The chair certainly had its moments of frustration, with its fiddly details, but overall it wasn't too bad. I used shades of red and orange for the foundation of detail, then added a wash of red to unify it all, and then added a few highlights. ⚰️🦇 To finish the piece, I painted the smokey background. I actually started this earlier to help strengthen other areas. To achieve this, I dabbed several layers of greys and blues until I felt it looked right. At the end, I added a thin wash of cerulean blue to unify it a bit. ⚰️🦇 This was a fun yet frustrating piece to work on. It's not as refined as I would have liked, but I'm still really happy with it. "Who's the most drop-dead gorgeous one of all?!" - Elvira Painting Update - I've started a new painting. It's a portrait of the gorgeous goth queen Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira Mistress Of The Dark. 🌕🦇 This is my second go at painting Elvira. I wasn't planning on doing a second one, but I saw this image and felt that I had to. I was attracted to Elvira's flamboyant pose, which is in keeping with her exuberant personality; her wit, charm, and confidence. I was also attracted to the image's colour palette. The chair on which she sits is this brilliantly vibrant red, which both contrasts and compliments Elvira's pale skin an black attire, as well as the cool blues featured in the background. 🌕🦇 This is won't be a highly detailed piece, there's not much there, but what is there is very concise. It's time for the brief visual depiction and insight into my creative processes for my portrait of the Grand High Witch. 🏢🐀 As I' said, this was a really fun piece to work on. So much so, I found stay away from it for too long. Even doing an all nighter to finish it off. Even the more challenging parts were enjoyable. I think all this has helped make this portrait one of my best of the year. 🏢🐀 The line work was pretty easy and straightforward. Despite having layers of intricate detail, the Grand High Witch's features in their basic form are quite bold, and easy to map out. When it came to filling her in, it was basically done in two parts, her head and then her shoulders. I started with a simple pink underpainting, to make it easier for me to refine the details of the eyes and surrounding areas. I used various shades of pink for the bulk of it. As I say, the details are quite intricate, so it took me a while to map out and shade all her wrinkles and skin texture as accurately as I could. My first run went really well, and I got a big chunk of the head/face done. It went so well, and I was having such a good time, that I ended going back to it to do some more, adding to and refining what I'd already done. When I started my second run, I finished painting the rest of the core details before adding washes over everything to unify it all, and then added highlights and lowlights. After that, I accentuated certain areas with washes of red, purple and brown. To finish the head off, I added the little bits of white whispy hair. With her head done, it was time to paint to her chest and shoulders. I did this using the same method as I had on her head. I present to you my final entry of Women Of Horror series for 2023; my penultimate painting of the year, my portrait of the Grand High Witch, as portrayed by Angelica Huston in The Witches. 🏢🐀 This was a really fun piece to work on. It was definitely challenging at times but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Trying to get my last two paintings completed before Christmas, I went full force with this piece, and got it done as quickly as I could. As I said previously, I didn't have the best of starts with this painting, as I made a costly mistake when mapping it out. I got frustrated, but soon regained my composure, and got myself back on track. 🏢🐀 As I stated in my initial post, there was actually a fair amount of intricate detail in this portrait. When I started I was a bit worried about how long it would actually take me to get done, or if I could even do it full stop. It really wasn't bad though. It took me some time to get it down and shade it in, but it never got tedious. The hardest/most time consuming part was the chest. I was working on that yesterday, and ended up working through the night as I was enjoying myself, and felt in the zone. I think my efforts paid off, because I think I've created a good representation of the character. "A stupid witch who answers back, must burn till her bones are black!" - Grand High Witch Painting Update - I've started my final entry of Women Of Horror series for 2023. This one is a portrait of the Grand High Witch, portrayed by Angelica Huston in The Witches. 🏢🐀 The Witches is a 1990 film adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl story. It stars Angelica Huston as Miss Ernst, aka The Grand High Witch; the most wicked witch that there ever was. Miss Ernest has summoned her a coven of witches to a meeting at a seaside hotel in England, to prepare a diabolical plot to rid England of all children. For a children's film, this film scared the shite out of me, and that is of course mostly due to Angelica Huston and her intimidating performance as GHW. For my portrait, I've decided to base it on the character's true face. I did this because I think that it's creepy af with its horrific exaggerated features and piercing eyes. It's something that made an impact and stuck with me since I first watched the film. It's an amazingly designed prosthetic, made all the more frightening by Huston's performance. 🏢🐀 Well I didn't have the best of starts with this painting. I've been working with a headache, so my concentration was a bit lax. I mapped out half of the face, before realising that I'd started it too far down on my grid. I'd wasted a lot of time, as I had to start again. To say that I got frustrated would be an understatement. My second attempt went a lot more smoothly, and was a lot more enjoyable. Sexy Shiny Goodness - I've now varnished my portrait of the beautiful Monica Bellucci, in her role of Dracula's Bride in Bram Stoker's Dracula, I've now staked her to an official completion. 🧛♀️🦇 Well this recording did not go too smoothly. When setting up, I discovered that my ring light hadn't broken. Thinking fast, I used the spotlight on a spare phone, and placed it in the ring light's grip. It's not as bright, but works fairly well. I still managed to capture a pretty good pop with this recording. As per usual, deepening the blacks just makes everything else stand out. A brief insight into my creative processes. 🧛♀️🦇 The journey started with the line work. As this portrait contains a mix of subtle and intricate detail, the line work was rather crude. It looked like the character, but a malformed version of her. 🧛♀️🦇 When I started painting the details, I concentrated on the face first. I began by blocking the face with a solid base of flesh tone pink. This had me in stitches; it looked so surreal (swipe left to see 😂). As the blends on the face are subtle for the most part, I did this with the intention of establishing a solid base to which I could build up layers of thin washes. However, before adding the washes, I had to draw out the details again, this time much more precisely; making note of the different areas of light and dark. As I usually do, I started with the eyes first, and then worked outwardly from there. As I was using a promo image as a reference, I made a couple of edits to make her look more vampiric; I added a subtle tint of red to her eyes, and added two small fang tips peaking out from under her top lip. Once all the basics were in place, I kept adding washes until I felt I'd got it as accurate as I possibly could. 🧛♀️🦇 After the face was sorted, I began painting the bride's jewellery and headdress. This was the most awkward, tedious, and time consuming part of the process. These areas are made up of small abstract shapes. I had to take my time to paint each one as precisely as I could. I present to you my completed portrait of the beautiful Monica Bellucci, in her role of Dracula's Bride in Bram Stoker's Dracula. 🧛♀️🦇 The Francis Ford Copolla classic is a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker's influential novel. Young barrister Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) is assigned to a new job working for Count Dracula, in his gloomy Transylvanian castle. Once Dracula lays eyes upon a photograph of Harker's betrothed, Mina Murray (Winona Ryder), he is convinced she is the reincarnation of his long lost love. Dracula imprisons Jonathan, leaving him with his brides, as he plans on traveling to London to begin a reign of seduction and terror. 🧛♀️🦇 I love Bram Stoker's Dracula, it's only one of my favourite horror films. I made it part of my Icons Of Horror series. The first scene with the brides is one of the more memorable scenes from the film. It's eerie, creepy and incredibly hot. The brides each make an impact as they slowly and seductively enter the scene, and quickly become more vicious; the reverse photography helps add to the eeriness. Bellucci's bride is the more memorable of the three. I'm not sure if this is because she's the first to be seen, because she's topless, has the most decorative headdress, or the fact Monica is so stunning. Either way, I felt it was Bellucci's bride character that I had to paint. 🧛♀️🦇 This was a fun piece to work on. It had its moments that tested though, painting the headdress got a bit tedious, but overall it was a fun project. Painting Update - I've started a new painting in my Women Of Horror series. This one is another painting that shines a light on a character that has featured in a previous piece. It is a portrait of the fookin stunning Monica Bellucci, featured as a bride of Dracula, in Bram Stoker's Dracula. 🧛♀️🦇 I didn't want to do another vampire soon after Regine Dandrige, but when I drew the bride from my lil tombola three consecutive times, I took it as a sign that the time is now. Even the image that I originally planned was very similar to my Regine piece; featuring a vampiric smile, so I changed it for this one. This one is based on a promo image for the film, and features a bit more of the bride's ornate headdress. Also, Monica looks a bit more human, not having her vampire eyes or fangs. I plan to paint these characteristics back in for my portrait of her. 🧛♀️🦇 Just having painted the line work for the bride, I can say that I'm glad that I changed the image that I'm working on, as I think it fills the canvas a lot better than the other one would have. Saying that, having just painted linework, I can tell that the ornate headdress is going to be a bit of a headache to get go; hopefully I'm wrong though. 🧛♀️🦇 I'm excited and nervous about getting stuck into this portrait. Sexy Shiny Goodness - I've varnished my portrait of Diana from Lights Out. She is now officially 💯 done and dusted. 🌑💡 With the heavy use of black in this piece, this was one of the most noticeable pops that I've ever managed to capture. It's definitely one of my most satisfying varnishings. As the varnish pushed the blacks into the void it made Diana's eerie silhouette far more impactful. Just finished writing a short film inspired by a recurring dream before my grandfather's passing. I had the dream again the night before our premier at @spookyempirefilmfest, it might have pushed my overactive imagination see all these hand crafted costumes. It carried over into my dreams, and when I woke up I rushed to find my phone and instantly, told my husband. I wrote it on the plane ride home. Now I am contemplating turning it into a film. Dream had pure Creepshow or tales of the darkside vibes and I can now see every shot in my head. If 2024 unfolds as planned, this might hit the screen before our feature. This one would be an exciting journey with VFX, practical FX, and a cast of very talented actors. I hate to over share but filmmaking excites me. When I feel like I have a great idea I am like a kid in a candy store and a $100. I present the new addition to my Women Of Horror series. A portrait based on Diana, the villainous ghoul portrayed by Alicia Vela-Bailey in David F. Sandberg's Lights Out. 🌑💡 When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) discovers that her brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is being tormented by Diana, a supernatural entity hidden within the shadows, she recalls her own experience with this entity, and sets out to investigate the connection between Diana and their mother Sophie (Maria Bello). 🌑💡 Lights Out is such a good film, based on Sandberg's own chilling horror short. It's got a great atmosphere, and chilling visuals. The characters are very likeable, and Diana herself is a great villain. I wanted to paint her because I not only wanted to put the spotlight on an overlooked horror villain, but I thought it would be an interesting challenge to paint a character with minimal defined features; a character that can only be defined by her surroundings. 🌑💡 As this painting is different from usual, my approach was different. With this one, I skipped the line work stage and just jumped straight into blocking in the abstract shapes around Diana. It then only took a small bit of shading with a mix of blues and greys, with a few small highlights, and it was done. As there isn't too much detail, i thought it was even more important to make sure what was there was spot on, especially in regards to Diana's silhouette. 🌑💡 This portrait definitely stands out from my others; it's more a portrait of the environment. A peek behind the curtain. Now that I've finished my portrait of Regine Dandrige, it's time for the transitional brief insight into my creative processes. 🧛♀️🦇 I started off with the outline, the basic framework on which to build upon. This was a fairly straightforward affair, as the details and lighting on Regina's face are pretty well defined. 🧛♀️🦇 As the details are well defined, building them up was fairly straightforward too. To start off, I gave her a brown underpainting. I then focused on her eyes, as I feel they're her strongest feature, and biggest focal point. The dark outline also made them a strong base to build out from. After I sorted her eyes, I started to block in her other features with various shades of pink. I was quite bold in the beginning, but then softened everything up and brought it all together with several thin washes. 🧛♀️🦇 To finish it off, I painted all the red bits; her lips, her dress, and her earrings. This was the easiest part of the process. The red sections are so bright and bold, they required very little shading. It was more or less a case of just filling in the line work. I did accentuate some of the shapes with a few small highlights and lowlights, but it was minimal, which was nice. 🧛♀️🦇 I had some much fun working on this piece. I had a few days feeling like total shite, but on all technical aspects, things went very smoothly. I present to you my completed portrait of Regine Dandrige, the enchanting villain out for blood, portrayed by the beautiful Julie Carmen in Fright Night Part II. 🧛♀️🦇 As I said when I started this piece, I think that Fright Night Part 2 is a severely underrated sequel, and that Regine Dandrige is a great villain; every bit as charming and vicious as her brother Jerry was. I'm glad to have her as part of my Women Of Horror series. Also, now that her portrait is done, I'm sure that I made the right choice using this image. 🧛♀️🦇 From start to finish, this was a really fun and straightforward piece to work on. It took a few layers to get the skin tones right, but I didn't seem to experience any of my usual troubles. The skin tones look pretty good, or at least they do to my eyes. Everything went smoothly when working on this piece; i got through it quicker than I thought. If I hadn't felt like utter crap the past few days, I would have been done even sooner. 🧛♀️🦇 I'm really happy with how Regine's portrait has turned out.
