Ancient Rome. NGC Choice Fine AD 14-37. Tiberius issued a coin featuring Justitia as Livia. Possibly issued before Livia’s death in AD 29, therefore may have circulated during the life of Christ. Livia had a strong personality, and many feel she guided the empire for decades through her calm and decisive actions to further her family legacy. #livia #ancient #ancientcoin #tiberius #ngccoin

Today 11th May in Ancient Rome we have an interesting contrast of early and late Rome, demons and saints 1000 years apart… Demons: Lemuria resumes, after the first day held on the 9th. Temples are closed and no marriages. There is also a sacrifice to be made to Mania goddess of the underworld. She was wife of Manth, both of them divinities or demons of pre-Roman Etruscan origins. Not to be hastily confused with the Greek Mania goddess madness though over time the syncretic tendencies would not have been missed. Mania and Manthus/Manth were part of a panoply of demons from the Etruscan underworld also including Charon and Tuchulca overseeing Manes and Larvae. They are directly associated with the practice of ritual bloodletting at funerals which over time evolved into the gladiatorial games and the practice of a hammer-wielding character knocking defeated gladiators hard on the head to ensure their death before being dragged to the ports Libitinaria. So Mania in early times may have had human sacrifice though this was frowned upon and came to be more symbolic or animal. Mania was also often used as a child scaring sandman - together with other vampires or demon characters such as Mormo. Saint! AD482 - by this time Pagan beliefs were all but outlawed and replaced by Christianity. On this day we have the birth of future emperor of the East Justinian the Great. Justinian I was Byzantine emperor from 527 to 565 AD. He is renowned for his efforts and partial success to restore the Roman Empire's greatness through military campaigns, legal reforms (most notably the Corpus Juris Civilis), and architectural achievements such as the construction of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. My first ever ancient that I’m posting to my Instagram! Here we got an Azilises Indo-Skythians kingdom tetradrachm minted around 85-45/35 BCE. The obverse features a king on a horse, holding a spear There is no way to tell which king is on the horse, but around the same time period a Indo-Skythians king named Maues captured some territories, but another possible ming I think it could be is king Azes I, though this is more unlikely due to him not being in power until 48BCE. and the coin was reportedly not being made anymore past 35BCE. The reverse features Tyche, the goddess of chance(good or bad fortune), holding a lmao in one hand and a palm branch in the other. I was unfortunately unable to translate the legends. The Greek is very outdated and I couldn’t match anything to online sources that would make sense, I’m sure an expert could help. I picked this coin up at the 2023 FUN show. #youngnumismatist #coin #hobbies #greekancient #ancientgreek #ancientcoin #ancientcoins #tetradrachm #silvercoins #silvercoincollection #funshow #collecter #silver #historicalcoin

Today 10th May in ancient Rome…AD214 birthday of Claudius Gothicus aka Claudius II. Claudius Gothicus, also known as Claudius II, was a Roman emperor who reigned from 268 to 270 CE. His major accomplishments include successfully fighting against the Alemanni and decisively defeating the Goths at the Battle of Naissus AD269. He played a crucial role in stabilizing the Roman Empire during a period of turmoil, pandemic and military conflict. He died of illness, possibly a plague that at its height was claiming 5000 lives per day. Despite his relatively short reign, his legacy endured as a capable leader who defended the empire at a critical time. Lysimachos, Silver Tetradrachm, c. 306-281 BC. Estimate: £800-1,000 Alexander the Great’s short reign saw the creation of an empire which stretched from Greece to India, but his untimely death in 323 BC threw this into turmoil. His lands were carved up by Alexander’s most powerful generals, including Lysimachos, who inherited the lands of Thrace. Lysimachos issued silver coins in his name, but not bearing his own portrait. Instead, his coins bore the head of Alexander the Great himself, who by this point had been deified – he had been made a god. This is evident from the Horn of Ammon, connecting him to the God, Zeus Ammon, and his eyes, wide open, looking upwards towards the heavens. Today 8th May in ancient Rome we have an interesting contrast: AD413 Honorius issues a tax edict to relieve several (9 or10) regions of Italy devastated by the Visigoths. Rome had already been sacked once in 410 and there was worse to come (455 and 475). The imperial capital of the Western Empire was at Ravenna by now but that was little consolation for a world still in shock that such a thing might have happened after 800 years of grandeur and stability for its >1M citizens. The largest city in the world. As an interesting contrast back in 44BC this was about the time of immediate aftermath of Caesar's assassination - Octavian entered Rome and began to make his own power plays, at the time he was a young man of 18-19 years of age. Caesar's will had been made public on 18th March and surprisingly Mark Antony's name was not as prominent as that of Octavian, taken as adoptive son and allowing him to claim a stake in the Republic's future.
