Pan by an unknown sculptor of the French School about 1700-1800 Pan, the Greek god of wild nature, was part man, part goat. His legendary birthplace was Arcadia, a remote wooded area of southern Greece. The inscription on the sculpture means 'Eat, play, drink. Pan, god of Arcadia'. FREDERIC LEIGHTON (1830-1896) The Daphnephoria (1874-6) The Daphnephoria was a festival held in ancient Thebes in honour of Apollo, the god of the sun and of music. Leighton has conceived it as a carefully ordered procession advancing slowly across the painting. The figures are carefully varied in attitude, gesture, dress, size and direction, in order to form a balanced and satisfying composition, but each is also a perfectly formed, ideal specimen of its type; every pose suggests that idyllic serenity which Leighton sought in classical Greece. The dark massive grove of trees, the bright marble elevated platform and the clear sharp Mediterranean light add to the solemnity and timelessness of the occasion. In this painting we see the culmination of the classical revival in high Victorian art. After LORENZO BARTOLINI (1777-1850) Venus (about 1830) Marble Bartolini was the leading Italian neoclassical sculptor of the generation after Canova. He based the Venus on a painting by Titian, the famous Venus of Urbino of 1538 which his friend J.A.D. Ingres copied for him from the original in the Uffizi at Florence. The best version of the sculpture is now at Montpellier in France; this copy came from the soap-makers A. and F. Pears Ltd., who may have used it to publicize their product or to decorate their offices. Fatidica was a Roman goddess notable for her prophetic powers, which she exercised on behalf of women. In Leighton's painting of her she has a distant expression which suggests she is pondering the future and what battles with the patriarchy lie ahead. The flamboyant gilded furniture and formal arrangement of our William and Mary room reflect the wealth of the powerful families who lived in English great houses of the late 17th and 18th centuries. It includes a bed that is literally fit for a queen. The furniture in this room is from the 18th century and was made for state apartments. These are grand rooms in aristocratic houses designed for use by members of the royal family or government. The mahogany bed came from the mansion of the Dukes of Buckingham at Stowe. It was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Borra (1712-1786) for the visit of Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1737. Later in 1845 it was re-gilded and varnished for the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. 📍 Location: Lady Lever Art Gallery Psamathe is an oil painting by Frederic Leighton, first exhibited in 1880. Artist: Frederic Leighton Year: 1879–80 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 85 cm × 66.5 cm (33 in × 26.2 in) The Sister's Kiss, The Light of the Harem, Iostephane, Psamathe, and The Nymph of the Dargle were Leighton's principal pictures in 1880. Psamathe is a purely classical composition. The subject is the Greek maiden, Psamathe, who was one of the Nereides. The artist has painted her sitting alone by the seashore, gazing over the Aegean, with her back turned to the spectator. Analysis: Ernest Rhys writes, "Filmy garments, which have slipped from her shoulders on to the sand; arms folded about her knees; every detail of the picture carries out the effect of dreamy loveliness that pervades Psamathe and her surroundings." Edgcumbe Staley writes, "She appears to be gazing fixedly over the blue waves. Her thin Grecian draperies reveal her exquisite figure, as she crouches, arms over knees, in a state of dreamy loveliness." Antinous 130 AD - 138 AD LL 208 Information: This is an ancient Roman statue of Antinous (Ant/IN/oh/us), a youth of renowned beauty and the lover of the Emperor Hadrian. Antinous drowned in the river Nile and Hadrian was devastated. He found consolation by surrounding himself with portraits of his beloved. He also founded a city on the banks of the Nile in honour of Antinous, which he called Antinoopolis and which had a temple to Antinous. A festival was also founded to honour his memory. If you look closely at the left knee of the sculpture, you'll see that there's a join, and beneath it, the surface of the marble is smoother. At some point, the ancient statue had lost its lower left leg and half the right arm, and the new pieces were carved in the eighteenth century to complete it. At the time people did not like their ancient sculptures to look damaged, whereas nowadays, it's considered essential to leave them as they are, with the marks of the passage of time. "...with eyelashes a yard long, a coquette beyond measure and as artful as Cleopatra". This is how Horace Walpole described Anne, Duchess of Cumberland, the subject of this Gainsborough portrait. Anne caused controversy when she became the wife of the King's brother in 1771, as she was a previously married commoner. 😲 Gainsborough painted her on several occasions, always sympathetically. There is real intimacy and tenderness in this portrait, which is a fine example of Gainsborough's later style. Lever bought the painting believing it was a portrait of Princess Augusta, daughter of George III. However she would only have been a girl when Gainsborough painted the rest of the royal family and the sitter's features strongly resemble Anne Duchess of Cumberland. Thomas Gainsborough was born on this day in 1727. Rossetti painted 'Sibylla Palmifera' for his patron George Rae, a Birkenhead banker, and a very patient man. Rae paid 400 guineas for the painting in January 1866. Two and a half years later he was still waiting for it. In a letter, which is now in the Walker Art Gallery's collection, Rossetti apologised for the delay in finishing the painting, blaming his "constant diarrhea" for the lack of progress. It seems that this was just one of many excuses which tried Rae's patience over almost five years, until it was eventually finished. Rossetti was born on this day in 1828. It's National Gardening Week, a great time to get outdoors and get planting! Of course if you need some inspiration before you step outside into the bracing spring air then you can find lots of beautiful flowers in our paintings. Do you recognise these flowers from our paintings? And could you identify the flowers themselves? We invited Andrew Turner from @worldmuseum_'s Clore Natural History Centre to take a closer look at the flowers in artworks around the gallery. Find out what he discovered in our flowers trail, via the link in our profile. We hope this inspires you to take a closer look at the floral delights on display all around the gallery when you next visit - and maybe even grow some yourself! Lady Hamilton as a Bacchante, probably painted in 1792 Elizabeth Vigée-Lebrun (1755- 1842) Oil paint on canvas Emma Hamilton was born Amy Lyon, in Ness, in Wirral. Her father was a blacksmith and her mother was a servant. Raised by her grandmother in the Welsh countryside, she later moved to London. In 1791 she married Sir William Hamilton, the British envoy to Naples. She became famous as the mistress to the naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson, with whom she had two daughters. Emma is dressed as a bacchante, a follower of Bacchus, the roman god or wine. She wears vine leaves in her half and a silk gown. She is performing one of her ‘attitudes’, a series of dance and mime acts based on classical poses. She often performed these to entertain friends in Naples. Mount Vesuvius in the background symbolizes both the place and her famed sensuality. The Decameron shows a group of friends telling stories to pass the time while they are staying in the countryside to avoid the plague in 14th century Florence. Definitely more wholesome than binging The Tiger King on Netflix during lockdown, which would be the 2020 equivalent. The artist John William Waterhouse was born on this day in 1849. Image description; a group of women in long flowing dresses look enthralled as they sit on the grass listening to a man wearing striped trousers, a matching tunic and red hat, holding a lute in one hand while he gestures with his other hand. Behind them is a marble bird bath and orchard, with trwo people walking through and possibly listening in. #Waterhouse #OTD #OnThisDay #LadyLeverArtGallery

#OnThisDay King George V and Queen Mary laid the foundation stone to Lady Lever Art Gallery 110 years ago. Under the foundation stone is a bottle containing a parchment with the words: "Lady Lever cut the first sod on the site of the Port Sunlight Factories of Lever Brothers Limited on March 3rd, 1888, and from that day until her death she was intimately associated with the progress of the Works and Village, and deeply interested in all the social institutions. She died on July 24th, 1913, to the great sorrow of all the inhabitants. Her resting place adjoins Christ Church, near the centre of the village with which her life was so closely associated, and by whose people she was so greatly beloved." This ceremony was performed from Hulme Hall using a replica of the village and an electric button. As the button was pressed a model of the stone being lowered could be seen on the replica village and simultaneously the actual stone was lowered, a wire from the model setting the crane into motion. Us, chilling out on World Poetry Day. Lawrence Alma-Tadema's painting, 'Favourite Poet' shows two women enjoying quite a lengthy verse, judging from the roll of parchment that one is reading from. Image description: a woman reclines on a huge cushion on a marble step, while her friend sitting on the step below her reads from a long roll of parchment. #WorldPoetryDay #Poetry #AlmaTadema #LadyLeverArtGallery

Antinous 130 AD - 138 AD LL 208 Information: This is an ancient Roman statue of Antinous (Ant/IN/oh/us), a youth of renowned beauty and the lover of the Emperor Hadrian. ‘When life’s alive in everything, Before new nestlings sing, Before cleft swallows speed their journey back Along the trackless track, – God guides their wing, He spreads their table that they nothing lack, – Before the daisy grows a common flower, Before the sun has power To scorch the world up in his noontide hour.’ Extract from Spring by Christina Rossetti Happy first day of spring, Spring Equinox, to everyone in the Northern Hemisphere. 🖼️ ‘A Spring Revel’, Robert Anning Bell, 1916, @leverartgallery. #preraphaelite #preraphaeliteart #victorianart #victorian #arthistory #artdailydose #artoftheday #artgallery #artappreciation #traintravel #artsociety #preraphaelitebrotherhood #preraphaelitism #prb #preraphaeliteart #preraphaelites #preraphaelitesociety #preraphaelitepainting #spring #springequinox #christinarossetti #ladyleverartgallery #robertanningbell

Today is the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Hopefully this means that we'll soon all be enjoying picnics in warmer weather, like this group of friends in Millais's painting Spring (Apple Blossoms). While the scene appears idyllic and carefree at first glance, the scythe appearing on the right reveals a darker message about the transience of youth, the changing seasons and the inevitability of death. So enjoy the spring weather and your youth while you can! Image description; women enjoying a picnic, with an orchard of trees covered in blossom in the background. The woman in a yellow dress lying on the grass on the right looks directly out at the viewer, while the blade of a scythe hovers above her. #SpringEquinox #Spring #PreRaphaelites #Millais #CarpeDiem #LadyLeverArtGallery
